I mean....I guess I'm excited about this announcement? I don't know. Go ahead and get your stones ready to toss at me, but I'm finding it hard to muster enthusiasm for a book like this. Don't get me wrong, I love the two main characters and I love the period, but honestly, how much of what I liked is left? We're dealing with a completely new timeline here now, and it's still going to take me a while (if ever) to accept and become excited about new literature announcements. It's like the Tarkin novel...definitely an interesting story to tell, and I'm sure it will be an interesting read, but without the context of the original EU, I'm just like "meh." And perhaps it's wrong to feel that way. I can still read and enjoy these new books, especially if they're good stories, and I can obviously still read and enjoy the older EU books, but there will always be something missing for me. I anticipate, especially if this new Ventress novel does well, that we'll get more Clone Wars scripts adapted to books or comics. After all, they have a ton of scripts laying around (in addition to a ton of scripts laying around for the dead Live Action show).
I agree. I already know what happens to Ventress and Vos at the end of the war because I was a Republic subscriber. I don't feel I really need to buy something that tells the same story I read 10 years ago, only different. However, we don't yet know just how different this (and all new products) will actually end up being from the EU. My feeling is that, if you view the EU through a dirty lens, thus obscuring the details but retaining the basic form, it has a chance of surviving almost intact. Not that I would bet on it, or that I really care, but I have the feeling this "non-Expanded" new universe is neither new nor entirely alternate to the one we're used to.
I think that some parts might be similar but I think you can pretty much rule out any type of large scale war (like the EU had in the NJO) until much later in the timeline. Being able to fend off a galactic traveling waring colony just twenty five years after being a 'band of Rebels' was really, really far fetched in my opinion.
I'm not giving up on the Ventress and Ahsoka partnership. If that is going to happen it is going to be after Order 66, which I believe this novel is before. It doesn't make any business sense to marginalize Ahsoka and Ventress. They come with established fan bases and exist during an era that allows a lot of creative freedom. I don't think a single novel is enough for Ventress and I don't think the theorized cameo in Rebels is enough for Ahsoka.
Pre-RotJ, I expect differences to turn out to be statistically insignificant. How similar things turn out to be post-RotJ is an unanswered question overwhelmingly dependent on the screenplay for Episode VII.
Hey does anyone remember when Ventress was an interesting character oh wait that was never. Man what the hell are they even doing this makes no sense.
A Ventress/Ahsoka bounty hunter team-up--if done right--could potentially make me like Ahsoka. Operative words being "if done right".
I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I love the main characters and am glad to see more TCW scripts adapted -- hopefully they eventually do enough to tie into ROTS. At the same time I'm tired of all of the new books being before ROTJ. It makes me worried that the future of the EU will just be standalones -- not that I want anymore nine book series -- closely tied to the trilogies. If that's the case we will likely never see a large effort to fill in the gap between the OT and ST. Regardless of their plans for the novels, if they wait too long every new release will be set around the five years before the ST and immediately afterward. Once the ST is finished they'd probably want to focus on the new characters for another five years. Likely, the period right after ROTJ will be forgotten, kind of like the period between TPM and AOTC. That thirty year gap -- especially the first half of it -- is the only place where the novels will have a large amount of freedom. We need some trilogies set right after ROTJ. It would be so easy to leave out any new characters and plot points of the ST. This is the most interesting period in the Star Wars universe and of would be a shame for it to be ignored
I wonder if they aren't over compensating for the elimination of the EU from canon by trying to have a novel featuring a loved EU character as the lead? That is what this smells like to me. Pure speculation on my part of course. https://www.facebook.com/pages/I-wa...istent-with-Expanded-Universe/622285481118739 They must be at least peripherally aware of fan groups like the above that are receiving a huge amount of attention. It would not surprise me if they sat down at some point and tried to brainstorm ideas to get back into the good graces of what they could view as their former customer base, not even really understanding the dilemma. Or it could be that they are trying to placate disgruntled TCW fans in the same way. Or they could have taken Sword of the Jedi and replaced Jaina's name with Asajj and Ben's name with Quinlan as so not to waste that whole story. Or my above notions could just be fan fiction
You know, I get those who are excited for it. And I get those who are dreading it. And I get those who are indifferent. We're all going to feel what we feel. What I don't understand is swearing the book off completely before we have any idea what the plot is even about.
They will get to the gap between the OT and ST after Episode 7 comes out. Maybe they will have a book or two and a comic leading into the new movie before it comes out. They might do a series right after Endor before then. I hope so. I want to see Han's reaction to the missing dish and Leia hashing things out with Anakin. They probably want us to go in as blind as possible. Del Rey and Marvel are probably just as clueless as we are as to what will happen in the ST. So I can cut them some slack for that era.
Robimus So what you're saying is this'll be about Ventress and Vos hunting down the Dagger of Mortis.
Not sure exactly where you are getting the idea that the books that have been mentioned for release so far are based around loved EU characters. We have one book that is a pure tie in to Star Wars Rebels. Another book about Tarkin (a main character from the first movie and who was in TCW towards the end. Another book about Luke Skywalker, another about Darth Vader and the Emperor. And the last about Ventress. All those books are from characters popularized either in the OT or TCW as far as I can tell.
Absolutely. It would be kind of silly to introduce unknown sequel trilogy characters to us (and for that matter what happened after ROTJ) in a book an entire year before the movie came out. Once Ep. VII is done with its theater run we will get bombarded with ST works.
This is what I'm talking about when I say that I don't think Lucasbooks gets it Could add it to my fan fictional scenario list. "Lets make a Vos novel because he was so cool in TCW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Apparently today might be the day where we find out if post-OT will be a focus before VII. People are speculating that we might get the comic announcements later today. The question is how close they are going to cut it when it comes to starting the post-OT stuff. This book brings us all the way to next summer with only a single book taking place after ANH. Personally I don't want anything post-OT until VII comes out. I want the authors to know where things are headed.
I'm in those sort of facebook groups, and they think that Caedus, Abeloth, and Vitiate are the greatest characters in the history of literature and that Denning is the greatest writer in the history of mankind. They hate the OT and its characters just because they're not EU. If I was Disney, I would say "good riddance" of these "fans".
