I agree, it makes sense for there to be a hologram outside of the coffin in order to lure someone further in the room. A hologram in the coffin itself would be gratuitous.

My only reason for hesitation is the possibility that we are looking to far into this. The visual of Luminara turning into a corpse was haunting. Maybe there is nothing beyond the fact that it is a cool looking effect.

Inquisitor: "Yes,Im afraid Master Luminara died with the Republic, but her bones yada yada etc ,luring the last Jedi to their ends" meaning she most likely died in order 66

Also, this show is funny, this ep in particular..and very inspired..coming from a former heavy skeptic thats sayinng a lot.

So do we have a God-Emperor of Mankind situation?

No, she's just plain dead. Or possibly quasi-undead, we're not clear on that yet.

After rewatching that scene a few times, I've come to the following conclusion:

Kanan can sense Luminara, but is "clouded" - the dark side is surrounding her. In the cell, she definitely had a "fleshy" look and did not seem to be a projection; especially when she merged with the coffin. The Inquisitor said it was "quite easy" after Kanan was confused and shocked with what just occurred. He also said "her bones" were still of use to the Empire.

I believe, by keeping her bones, the Inquisitor (or whoever) has control of the tether between life and death - essentially, Luminara is being prevented from becoming one with the Force. In order to achieve Force walk, or control any spirit by Sith alchemy, it always requires a restless soul. Ancient Sith Inquisitors had the power and knowledge of some of the darkest rituals and Force powers; spirits could be forced to serve, or their powers exploited, by a practitioner - who might promise to release them after they've served their purpose

Anybody have a high quality screenshot of Luminara's coffin? I'm transliterating the text on it but can't make out the two small words on the left on the screenshot I have. The bigger text says "Luminara Unduli, Jedi Knight" in case anyone else was wondering.
On another note, she looks like she's just frozen in carbonite, but Wookiepedia says that carbonite freezing it used to preserve the dead on some planets as well as to confine living Jedi in a way that prevents them from using any Force abilities.
I'm also in the camp that she's not a holographic projection, too, but she doesn't look like a Force ghost, either...

I can't edit my post for some odd reason. Anyway, I think maybe the Luminara we saw was some kind of Force echo showing her last moments before she was executed by way of a bad carbonite freezing. That's why Kanan can sense her.

If she were frozen in carbonite, she'd be well preserved - it looks like she's somewhat decomposed in that coffin, and even mummified. That's why I'm so curious to know if she died in Imperial custody, as the holo images seem to show, or whether she was killed during Order 66 and her body was recovered.

I don't have a screenshot, but from what I've studied (and this is really kinda weird) the first line says "File Luminara Unduli", and the second one says "Class Jedi Knight"
So why in the world would a coffin be labeled with the word 'File'?
Unless I'm really reading it wrong.

I'm going to post my review in the episode thread later today but I thought I would address the whole Hologram vs Spirit thing:

I'm leaning towards her being a spirit. When Luminara looked up and at Kanan and Ezra her eyes showed too much silent sadness, distress, etc for it to be a mere hologram. Furthermore, when she looked back at them before phasing into her coffin her eyes and facial expression showed emotion again. Second can holograms even phase through solid objects? I know that if someone touches a hologram their hand, arm, etc goes through it but can a hologram actually go through something like a wall or door? Luminara phasing through the coffin seems closer to what a ghost does then what a hologram does.

And as others mentioned there was no corpse until she phased into the coffin.

Creepy small detail I just noticed: Luminara's "spirit" doesn't have a shadow. You can clearly see Kanan's shadow on the wall behind her, but not hers.

Has anyone considered that, since she was mummified, maybe her body preserved some of her life force?

Maybe. Is that even possible? I guess parts of the soul could linger though.

Is it weird that it reminds me of Night at the Museum and how King Tut could make his presence know?

I feel a little horrible now. But still, whatever is at work here needs to be explained fully. Maybe they'll do it in the recon review for that episode.

Wow. I didn't even recognize that. I think I need to go back and watch that episode.
