I keep coming across these rumors from across the net that mention Luke's blue lightsaber, the one he lost when his hand was cut off in ESB, being a major plot object in Episode VII.

For example the following post was from a source that has supposedly been very credible thus far: http://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/2nyd64/rumor_potential_4chan_episode_vii_leak_possible

How could this be? It clearly can be seen falling into the depths of Bespin's atmosphere. Bespin is a Gas Giant. I checked my ESB special edition DVD and you can clearly see the lightsaber still in the hand falling (at approx. 1:52:44).

They make sure to emphasize it is the blue one he inherited from his father Anakin, and not the green one he constructed for ROTJ.

Am I missing something? Is there something in the EU that I am not familiar with? Did Luke have more than one blue lightsaber?

Well Luke survived the fall the saber could have as well. Sucked into one of the tubes.

The lightsaber that Kira is holding in the leaked concept art appears to be of the same design as Luke's from ESB and ANH.

I think starocean90 is referring to this:
    https://gma.yahoo.com/2-secrets-rev...force-awakens-145500919--abc-news-movies.html

They refer to the sound at the end of the trailer being luke's blue saber. But using that particular sound could easily have been a mistake, another lightsaber entirely, or just a random lightsaber sound they chose for the end of the clip without any significance whatsoever.

Nope. You clearly see it fall into the atmosphere. What tubes could there possibly be down there?

I'm with you there. If it's true, that's gotta be one of the dumbest plot devices in the history of the movies. Luke's saber falls from Cloud City, soars through space, and lands on another planet. . . only to be discovered 30 years later. . .

Why won't this go away? PLEASE GOD MAKE IT STOP!!!11

What is easier -- make a new blue lightsaber or find one that fell down into gas giant?

What is more believable -- 100s (or more) of blue lightsabers in GFFA from old Jedi or FIND ONE IN POISON GAS?

This is what makes Star Wars so damn awesome..

You can debate and debate and pull theories out of your ass til the cows come home.

You want to know the answer to the blue lightsaber???

    **Spoiler alert**

Its long gone. It will not be in TFA...Yoda found it in his cracker jack box.

If Luke's first lightsaber shows up in 7 I'd consider it a movie mistake. Seems like an odd thing to screw up though, as anybody who actually watches the scene knows where it went. I suppose it could have landed on a mining ship or out of sight platform below but eh

If it's in 7, they'll just amend those few frames in the "Black Diamond Ultra Star Wars Spontaneous Expilaladocious Editions" coming out in 2016, 2019 and 2022.

I have a hard time buying this story about Luke's lightsaber suddenly showing up somewhere 30 years after he lost it. If it were going to be found somebody would have spotted it way before that. He still had the green one at the end of ROTJ didn't he? Why wouldn't he still have that one?

I think it would be realtively easy to explain how the lighsabre was found. It just needs a bit of thought.

On my copy it doesn't look "clearly" like a lightsaber or a hand. Maybe it's clearer in a blue ray copy or something? Could you take a screencap?

To me it just looks sort of like a piece of debris, perhaps knocked off the antenna thing as luck slams into it. As a matter of fact, it's kind of unlikely that it would be his hand/lightsaber. It fell from the platform like a full two minutes before Luke jumped. We don't see it sitting in the tube he was sucked into, so it would have to have been "dropped" by a tube like right next to Luke's (because from his perspective it's close, dropping straight from his position). So not only did the lightsaber get sucked into a tube very close to Luke's (out of what appears to be thousands), but that there was some kind of delay that cause the lightsaber to sit in a tube for two minutes beforehand.

Anyway, to answer you question in regards to the rumors, one of the possibilities is that the mystery artifact collector character played by MAx Von Sydow is actually Lobot. If so, I can very well see how he could have that Lightsaber, or could have saved it. His brain at the time was supposedly connected directly to the city's central computer. Perhaps the tube-dispossal system identified refuse before dumping (makes sense that it might, lest something valuable get tossed). If it pinged Lobot that a "Lightsaber" was detected, he could have it retrieved rather than dumped. Or maybe the tube system auto-dumped organic matter, but saved valuable equipment (like a saber).

At any rate, Sydow-as-Lobot is interesting in regards to potential access to Luke's lost saber.

FWIW, regarding the whole sound of the lightsaber at the end of the trailer, keep in mind most of the sound effects in that trailer, if not all, were taken from the other films. There is undoubtedly a lot of work left to be done for sound engineering and they've placed a lot of pre-used sound effects in the trailer as placeholders.

The lightsaber and hand fell down that giant hole. Luke fell down it too but someone landed in a tunnel. I'd venture a guess and say the lightsaber found its way into another tunnel.

Maybe an ugnaught picked it up and it ended up traveling on the black market for 30 years. Or maybe Vader, recognizing the saber, went back and found it. Not sure what he did with it, but maybe once Vader and the Emperor were killed, Luke found it at Vaders castle or the Imperial palace. He took it and then sent it on its way back to Tatooine for a reason.

I had forgotten about that shot, always wondered what that was. TBH though I can't really tell what that is. Looks more like an Imperial key card from Jedi Outcast haha. Also Thomas Cobain makes some very good points.

That is inconclusive at best. I think that it could have been something off of his belt or something that snapped off of the vane when he hit it. It wasn't in the tube with him before the hatch opened. I wonder what the odds are that it even fell into the same chute that Luke did. I believe that the hand was still on Cloud City.

If Han gets concerned about Luke when he's shown the lightsaber (which is a rumor from months back), it would make more sense that it's the ROTJ lightsaber. Han realizes Luke doesn't have his lightsaber any more.

Ben - "Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it."

I must have missed that part in ROTS.

101% of the rumors on the internet are wrong. Remember that.
