Face looks exactly the same - just the hairstyle is different.

    CGI-BOBAFENT

Well, no one is explaining it very well. The fact is that it is just the way the hair is styled that is different. There is more of it, or it it just is not brushed the same, I'm not not sure which.

The hair is one issue with ROTS Chewie yep (not the style, a difference in style is fine, afterall it changes throughout the OT , my problem with the hair is it looks too fresh out of the packet, too fake) but biggest problem is the mouth, watching that making of video about the Wookies shows the sculpt was nearly there, but as soon as his mouth started moving in ways Chewies mouth never did it ruins the illusion. It doesn't help that in almost all the promo shots they exaggerated these expressions to the extreme (doesn't look as bad in the movie but still not cool) You can sense some mild scepticism from Mayhew in that vid "...it should be ok"

Still too early to tell but from what we've seen it looks like they've fixed this problem for TFA.

I never said Chewie's hair was a problem. I said it was different.

What is wrong with it looking clean and new? Maybe he was just having a bath when the Separatists invaded and couldn't find a comb.

There is no problem with the mouth - looked like Chewie, acted like Chewie, it was Chewie.

As long as he gets SOMETHING to do, I'LL be happy. He is the most underused of the characters in the franchise.

Comparing the ROTS Chewie to a fan-made costume is spot-on, IMO. That doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing - there are some wickedly cool fan-made Chewie costumes out there, but the point is that it doesn't quite hit the mark in terms of capturing his likeness. Looking at the two masks side by side, the big difference for me is the brow and the shape around the eyes. I'm not sure if this is due to them attempting to make him look younger, but his brow is not as heavy and it looks...flat. In the OT, there was some nice definition in that area and a lot of shadow, which made his eyes appear to sit back further in his head. I'm a portrait artist and if there's anything I've learned when capturing likenesses, if you have one little line off, it can throw off your entire drawing. I believe something similar is going on here in terms of ROTS Chewie. While it's close enough for us to know who it's supposed to be, there are a few 'lines' that aren't quite right and it's throwing the whole thing off.

As I speculated in another thread, it looks like a different mask. One that makes him look like he's squinting in agony. The lighting(or lack thereof) makes it look like his eyes are pools of black but they're in there.

I'm of the opinion the 'thank you' vid was one of the last re-shoots of the film, and involves a Star Destroyer set, Chewbacca, and a lot of action. Below one of the tables looks to be a black garbage bag of a re-painted prop, probably a droid that takes damage in the film. Looks like the rumors of Han & Chewy taking control of a Star Destroyer might be true...but if Chewy's supposed to look like he's in pain, and it was important enough to reshoot to get it right...well. Draw your own conclusions.

As far as what Chewie should look like, he's supposed to look kind of like the wolf man, with a visibly protruding jaw, cheeks and brow. The hair hangs loose below his chin and above his brow like long hippy hair, how it looked in Empire when being blown in the snow. In Revenge of the Sith he looked like Captain Caveman or Cousin It. Or a big furry R2 unit.

A lot of conclusion jumping here, not entirely sure how you're getting from a garbage bag to seeing a broken droid but happy for you to point it out. (This is a set, chances are its full of plastic bottles and poly cups!)

Also I see imperial walls but not necessarily Star Destroyer, again happy to be pointed in the right direction :)

I think this is a big part of it. Same issue with TPM Yoda, but to a lesser degree. Going out of the way to make sure they look younger but massively overdoing it.

To me it looks like a droid prop fresh off the mold, still in protective plastic. Ready to be 'sploded and blasted into pieces.

    Possible early concept: [IMG]

I have been known to be wrong though...from time to time...

Luke the Oneironaut okey does I see what you're saying about the paint, definitely a spray booth, more likely for a bit of last minute set detailing rather than droid.

So your biggest problem is the improved technology over time? In the OT era, they literally couldn't make his mouth move how they would have liked, as it would have made the mast too bulky and unusable. Now they can.

Sorry if you can't accept improved creature tech over time. I think it worked perfectly IMO.

I think it's clear that someone the mask wasn't made for is wearing it, and their head is WAY smaller than Mayhew's head, thus the dimensions of the mask are off and the person's eyes don't even fit to where Mayhew's eyes would be.

The mask simply isn't filled out underneath.

Don't know how I'd feel if they died together. But I've wondered what would happen to Chewie if only Han dies in TFA. Would they keep him around or retire the character? Maybe he goes home to Kashyyyk. I know that Peter Mayhew has a lot of trouble getting around these days. So assuming they don't want to use Chewie without Mayhew, I'm not sure how active of a role he'd have.

He also looks more beefy in ROTS. His chest is more pronounced, which is especially apparent when Yoda is leaving Kashyyyk. I also think the coloring is more blonde and he has more of a cone head type look. The teeth also look to be spaced out differently. I don't think he looks bad, per se, just different from what we saw in the OT.

redlightning, I don't know what Chewie would do if Han died. When Han was left out in the cold on Hoth, Chewie freaked out and then started crying and did the same again, when Han was put into Carbon freeze. If Han dies, and there are stormtroopers or bad guys around, I sure do hate it for them. He might pull their arms off, lol. I doubt it, it's got to be kid friendly and PG or PG-13 at the most.

Chewie has pledged a life debt to Han... so he is in it to the end with Han. If Han were to die and Chewie couldn't save him, Chewie would take that as a failure of his life debt, which would be devastating to him.

Yeah, that's why he was running away and Han chewed him out.

    Han: "Chewie come here!!!!"
Chewie: Shakes head back and forth (NO WAY)
