the more I think about it, I think the scene needed something, a reaction of some kind, it did seem rather unintentionally comical to me Palps: you burnt your pop tarts Vader: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Since Vader screamed "NOOOO" when he killed the emperor in Return of the Jedi, it was necessary for Lucas to make him scream "NOOOO" at the end of Revenge of Sith, otherwise the scene wouldn't have made sense. They had to match.
If it weren't for the internet I wouldn't even know it was an issue. What else works there? He gave up everything to save his wife and finds out he killed her (directly or indirectly). Yeah, if ever there was a Nooooooooooooooo moment, that was it. Oh, we're talking about RotJ? In that case, it's out of place. It's just unnecessary. If it wasn't needed in 1983 it isn't needed now. He actually gave himself away and it's not as shocking (no pun intended).
I don't remember anyone laughing during the second half of ROTS in the movie theater. More crying and silence...
I never understood the backlash to it in Revenge of the Sith. I saw it in the theaters, and it made sense in the context of a guy that had been to the extent of human suffering both physically and emotionally, and just had nothing to do but lash out in a primal rage. There were no words left.
"No" is a word. My problem isn't with the "NOOOOO" it was the campy way it was presented. If he had destroyed everything in sight with a rage fueled hatred while repeatedly screaming "NO" it would have made more sense.
I love the "Nooooooo" in both Sith and Jedi. It feels more connected and in Jedi I think it makes it that much more powerful. Anakin has been without a voice of his own for so long, under the power of Palpatine, that he vocalizes that when he finally breaks the spell to save his son. I love it.
I think it was, actually. Anakin has become a parody of evil. That's what's so tragic about it. He's not even "real" anymore. Instead, he's a clunky robot monster straight out of the 1970s.
Or a 1950s sci-fi horror movie/magazine. All the villains in ROTS -- the "monsters" -- are rather comical. Grievous, Sidious, Vader. Anyone ever noticed that?
they are all monsters. grievous - ghost/skeleton. vader - franks's monster. sidious - vampire. utapau dude - the mummy/phantom of the opera.
It's something that looks good on paper, but was embarrassing the very first time i saw it, and still is. However i'm not sure if it just needed a better take, or to be replaced entirely. Perhaps if i would have sympathized with Anakin more throughout the movie i would have felt it more, but that's a whole other discussion.
I don't mind the one in ROTS, but the one in ROTJ removes all sense of subtlety from the scene, and is just so hammy. Also it just seems to fade away half way through the second Noooooo!
