Literally every continent on this planet has sand. It sands to reason that on a planetary scale there are going to be multiple worlds repeating multiple environments. I dont find that abnormal at all. Also, on this planet there are TONS of places i could describe as "fringe" spots on earth. There is nothing wrong with sand and fringe planets in outer space. I live on the beach (west coast) and i have seen sand from africa, central america, maine, hawaii, and even on rivers and they all are different in grain and texture in some cases but look the same. But when it comes to Desserts.they all look the same, its just the nature of the math that governs our galaxy. The fibonacci sequence repeats elements in nature mathmetically. GFFA cant be that much different in that regard.

A rose by any other name would still smell as rotten.

I'm tired of desert planets. I get that Tatoonie is crucial, a necessary evil at this point, but did we really need another one of these? Of all the places to explore, with today's technology able to serve up sights that challenge our imaginations, this just feels redundant beyond belief.

Yeah, between Tatooine and Geonosis I've had enough desert worlds for a while.

i guess the only thing im hoping is that its not entirely desert or something about it is really special other than being Rey's home. The Star Destroyer suggests so.

    Maybe it's a junk world?

If not, there's some reason a battle took place there.

I like the sound of the name Jakku better than Naboo. Sounds like Dooku. I bet we go full circle and see Tatooine in IX.

It already does. It's a freaking graveyard for ships. Why would Tatooine have the remnants of a big battle, anyway?

I know it sounds kind of cheesy, but i hope we get to see maybe some new sand creatures on Jakku, maybe to flex some CGI :)

Why would Endor, Hoth, and Yavin have remnants of a big battle? Sometimes remote worlds find themselves populated by rebels and Imperials for various reasons.

Though in the case of Tatooine, Jabba the Hutt was killed in ROTJ and one would think there's a power vacuum at some point afterwards.

Because there were in fact rebel and Imperial bases there, that's why. Why would there be a rebel or imperial base on Tatooine?

And no, the Empire wouldn't care about some Hutt controlled backwater planet, anyway.

Somewhat. Also I'm implying that Tatooine got a name change.

In the 20 years between ROTS and ANH, a rebel base sprang up on Dantooine and vanished long before the Empire investigated it. Perhaps a backwater planet like Tatooine that the Empire cares nothing about would be a great location to hide some rebels?

Not after the Death Star plans were taken there, with a smuggler who blasted out of Mos Eisley with them. If word of the events of ANH were passed on beyond Tarkin & Vader (guys like Tagge did leave the Death Star, after all, so they may have known what was up), then the idea of Rebels operating out of Tatooine may have come up--so if nothing else they'd keep an eye on the planet.

I really dislike the idea of renaming Tatooine "Jakku". We know it has only one sun. Unless they somehow destroyed the other one without destroying the system, or all life within the system, then...no Tatooine.

Jakku, I just love this name. And we don't know if the entire planet is desert, maybe like someone said: It will be a planet of junk, or it is a place were all the galaxy trhow the old ships and all the stuff that they don't use anymore.

So now the planet is being watched by Imperials? First the Empire doesn't care and now they're keeping tabs on it. Sounds like any way you slice it, there is potential for a battle on Tatooine. I'm sure some book down the line will explore that possibility. With the fall of Jabba the Hutt and the decline of the Empire, a planet breaking away and being renamed wouldn't be unusual. But one sun in the final product would pretty much guarantee it's not Tatooine. I just think it's silly to argue that Tatooine couldn't have a battle in the 30 year gap between ROTJ and TFA.

"Watching" could simply mean "leave a detachment there to keep tabs on things in the major towns". It's Tatooine, it wouldn't take many... and it'd be a pretty boring backwater world to be posted on.

In any case, it's not Tatooine. That's the most important thing. Welcome, Jakku...hopefully we'll never see you again after this film to visit different environments and no longer subject cast & crew to temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit. :p

    1) This is absolutely beautiful news, I SO didn't want Tatooine; we've had quite enough of that.
    2) Looks like Tatooine in what we've seen so far, yes, but desert sand dunes DO have a way of looking alike.
    3) We haven't seen more than about 40 seconds of this planet, so we shouldn't jump to conclusions that it will look exactly like Tatooine overall. Could the water scenes be on the same planet? They don't look too Tatooine-ish. Certainly, a planet could have many different types of terrain, like, say, earth does?

I love the name. It sounds like it belongs. Off beat and goofy enough to fit right in.

Maybe it is Tatooine? Formosa to Taiwan.
