Of all of MSW's info the bit I'm most sceptical about is a younger actor playing Luke in the flashback. As others have rightly pointed out, it appears that Mark was at Pinewood after he had shaved off his beard, and it would make sense that the beard was for the scene where Rey finds him and the scenes with a slightly younger Luke would have been shot after Mark had ditched the beard. Plus wasn't there that behind the scenes shot earlier in this thread which clearly showed the Luke and R2 shot from the trailer, with JJ directing, and someone did a comparison shot of Mark's hand and the "Luke" hand in the picture and they matched?

Good call Nightangel. I think that might well be flashback Luke (and that's also the hand comparison shot that adds weight to Mark being in the teaser already.

    OR

As Chorus has said, that pic is Mark visiting/ near the studio after wrap when he's shaved his long beard off, and Flashback Luke has the short beard look we saw in the other Pinewood shot (in his son's t-shirt design).

but his look there was almost the same as when he did the Skellig filming, so I doubt that would fit for a Luke 10 years before TFA. I think he did here some close-up shots for Skellig/last scene.

well SW7 news said sources told them that shaved Hamill shot scenes, that could easily be flashback beardless Luke.:)

Wasn't his beard a fair bit longer for Skellig? I can't remember anymore

the Skellig shoot was end end of July and that pic above my post was around mid-August, so basically around 2 weeks later.:)

It is funny to head back to those days before we got anything resembling a solid skeleton for the plot, and we were still operating off the bad speculation that Luke was an evil cyborg, and the Mystery of the Beard was the glue holding everything together. Hadn't looked back at any of that stuff until this morning.

Anyway, options as I see them.

    1) Young actor: Worst choice. Confusion abounds
    2) Young actor, CGI face replacement: Could work depending on lack of dialog/minimal emoting.
    3) Hamill, clean shaven: Might look too old for how far back the flashback is supposed to be.
    4) Hamill, clean shaven, CGI touch-ups: Probably best case, but would it be less or more distracting than full-replacement?
    5) Young actor, never faces camera: Easiest solution, but maybe not all that satisfying.

I think if the time since disappearance is around the 10 year mark, it's Hamill for sure. Honestly? That hand comparison pic is good enough for me at this stage. Also worth remembering, the Robert Boulton info was not a part of the call sheet info (which so far is what's proven the most accurate).

EDIT - didn't MSW or someone get pics of Hamill on the boat to Skellig?

I hope the next trailer either fully confirms the MSW info is broadly correct or blows it out of the water for good.

That's a great pic, thanks for posting, Star.

Ok I think FB Luke is clean shaven.

I would say same lenght of beard, but Skellig has less grey hair. Hmmm, maybe at Skellig they only did far away shots of Hamill, so he needed not to color more grey hair. And at Pinewood they made the close-up shots of Hamill for Skellig scnene. ;)

or maybe that pic was made before coloring, because here he looks like having more grey hair (but I say same beard lenght).

De-aging is a real thing now in Hollywood. A lot of films do it without people even realising. Apparently it was done on Daniel Craig in Skyfall. If Hamill plays Luke in the flashback, then it would have to be a bit heavier than what Hollywood films do now. More along the lines of Sir Christopher Lee in the Hobbit films.

Unless they're replacing Boulton's face entirely, or hiding it entirely, he's not playing Luke. I just don't see anything coming from that but confusion. Hell, he looks younger than Hamill did in 77 - and doesn't really look like Hamill on top of that.

Chalking that up to bad speculation.

I think so. I think there's around a 10 year gap and Hamill is playing Luke throughout.

it depends on when this flashback scene takes place, in case it is 10 years before TFA, then the unshaven Hamill works as mainly hooded figure, but if it takes place 20 years before TFA, then maybe more work is needed. ;)

That's very true. Fully depends on how far back the flashback takes place. And yes, I never bought that that young fella was playing Luke in the flashback.

I prefer Luke having the brown hair+ brown/grey beard over mostly grey look but we seem to be getting grey Luke, which makes him look older.:)

It would have been an entertaining use of movie budget to send Mark Hamill on a world tour... LOOK! He was in Bali. LOOK! He was on Easter Island. LOOK! Finse again!
