And last but not least the old rumour about Luke being a dark sider now.

So deaf, mute, blind cyborg Sith Luke. [face_clown]

The Tomb rumor was my favorite. I loved it. Luke trapped guarding a tomb was a cool plot device.

I liked it better than the current rumor of self imposed exile due to another Jedi massacre.

It sounded too much like Rory guarding the Pandorica in Doctor Who for my taste.

which is still better than sounding too much like Yoda IMHO. At least it is from a different franchise.

I'm not a fan of Luke going into exile because his students were killed in a battle, either. I do however think it's really powerful if Luke wrestles with his destiny and his purpose after his wife is killed and his daughter is lost as well.

If Luke dies at the end of IX, I want to see a small medical craft land on the planet's surface after the victor has left. A team of medical droids work on Luke, extracting his brain and placing it inside the glass orb of a BT-16 spider droid, B'Omarr monk style. One of the droids torches Luke's corpse, and we watch Luke crawl off into the sunset.

I like this idea as well. It gives the story a sense of deep character. Although i don't see why they couldn't incorporate both ideas into the ST. Perhaps they yet will. Misdirection on both counts to keep us guessing maybe.

One of the reasons they decided to have Luke not show up at the end is probably because he'd kill Kylo and that would be the end. No trilogy. Luke is probably more powerful than Kylo, right? Seems fairly logical you want to keep them apart.

Also, some of these ideas about putting Luke in the film earlier to avoid the deus ex machina of him showing up to save the day at the end don't really make much sense or sound very good at all. We see a few scenes of him doing what? Sitting meditating? Keeping watch on Rey how? Not only do scenes like this not make much sense, they sound absurdly dull, even comical. What, Rey is running from Kylo and then suddenly we cut to Luke scratching his head? Brilliant. That would explain everything -- wait, no it wouldn't. Why is he reacting now to this particular action? Why not earlier on Jakku? Why not years before when Rey is having some other kind of trouble.

Scenes like this not only break the chain of cause and effect in the story, but they immediately destroy the mystery created about Luke's whereabouts. All for what? So Luke can show up and kill Kylo, as he would certainly do? Or does Luke show up only to be stopped by an earthquake? That doesn't make sense -- why would such a powerful master let an earthquake stop him from taking Kylo down? Or capturing him?

The story reason for having Luke absent for most of the first film is pretty logical. He would kill Kylo whereas Han can't. Plus, with Luke around, there's no need for the new characters to do anything. And Kylo creates a much bigger threat with no Luke around.

As for the claim that TFA is a direct sequel to ROTJ, 30+ years is a bit long for a direct sequel. Maybe if GL had made the ST 5-10 years after ROTJ, then the idea of a direct sequel would make some sense (where we begin with Luke a main part of the story).

EDIT: There's also some begging the question/circular logic going on here. People assume that Luke is in the state of mind that he was in in ROTJ, and that he would want to be out taking on the First Order. But everything we've heard suggests he's not in that state of mind. He probably needs Rey to pull him out of it.

I'm sure you can think of reasons for this, right?

I'll give you one, this information may spoil the movie ....

I'm not convinced Luke's been in exile. I strongly suspect he's been traveling the galaxy learning deeper insights into the Force. And I also believe this will be explored in a future animated series.
