Except that a side character schooling the villain adds no urgency to the story. Unless we are meant to side with Kylo for some reason.

Why can't there be a small scene of dialogue, maybe "The Force is strong in my family....you have it too" then the usual music-only final scene?

Just saying: whose to say there won't be a Luke etc.dialog scene finishing up the film?

I'd like to think J.J. and co. would break with some tradition if it means telling a more enjoyable story.

I don't think we know enough to say whether such a scene would include dialogue or not - going off the production info alone. There would be no indication in such a doc one way or the other - so (assuming for the sake of debate the info is broadly accurate) to state confidently that there was or wasn't dialogue you would need to have seen the script or spoken with someone who knew for sure. If the rumoured ending is correct I could see either possibility, though I think those hoping for a major sit down explanation of anything from Luke are wide of the mark.

Must agree Luke exposition would be out of the question (and it would effectively kill any drama / action the ending might hold.)

I guess I don't agree that the only way that TFA would work is if the characters needed to search for Luke. These are professional story tellers. I'm sure they could have come up with some important task for Luke . I think it actually makes LESS sense to NOT include the only Jedi left in the galaxy at the end of RotJ in the film that is it's sequel in the saga. It sort if seems contrived to have him off the canvas and missing for over ten years, like they really did want him out of the way and didn't want to worry about what to do with him in TFA. Do you realize that TFA will be the only film in the saga in which a Jedi is NOT actively involved in the story? In this universe, Jedi are what make it unique from all other science fiction/fantasy universes, yet there won't be one who actually has a role in this sequel to RotJ... And I find that very disappointing. I know that some people say there's a lot more to Star Wars than Jedi, and it's true, but those other elements are like the frosting on the cake. It's the Jedi and the Skywalker family story told in the background of those other great elements that are paramount in this saga.

We get to watch Luke build a new Jedi Order rather than read about how he did so in an opening crawl. That is actually an unbelievable gesture to Luke fans.

In fact some may assume the locating and finding "the last Jedi" could be considered a celebratory moment. I completely agree with your statement.

I don't call wiping out decades of Lukes Jedi building work and having to wait for Rey to come and fix Lukes broken soul before he does anything significant in the GFFA again.....a gesture.

We don't know how it'll really play out.....but it sounds far too much like what happened with Yoda and Obi-Wan at the moment.....and for what???

so they can try an out OT the OT....where they've cooked up another extinction level event for the Jedi and another freaking Skywalker goes bad....

Either way, all 3 end with steps being ascended and a pinnacle of success/reward being reached at the top of those stairways.

Of course it's not a gesture. It's a story. Big damn hero beating youngster baddie to the curb, on the other hand, is not a story.

Not until you throw some obstacles at the hero. Or toy with expectations.

A powerful party beating a powerless party is just the expected outcome. It's not even a story. You have to set it up to be something more than that to make it worth telling. And the approach is almost every time to make us root for the weaker party. Or make us doubt the strength, which could work for an older hero for instance. Imagine if Yoda had taken on Anakin in Rots. Not interesting. Also less personal.

Apologies. This ethic of "never admit you're wrong on the interwebs" just gets under my skin sometimes.

i would rather have it established already. And it sounds to me that he really is not building a new jedi order. he is teaching Rey, and she gets to build it. why should that make me happy???:(

I believe that Luke is going to adopt a new philosophy for the Jedi going forward. I propose he will not build a new "Order", i think he's going to learn from past mistakes to keep it small, more personal and mystical in nature, perhaps a Master and one Padawan type thing, so that there can never be more than a few Jedi at any one time. It's easier to manage that way, and lessens the chances of the darkside creeping in.

Luke will probably have a few small but important scenes. I'm also pretty sure that Kylo's line about the "last Jedi" is completely plural. Luke, Maz, and Rey are probably the main players, as far as the light side goes, but there could be others. I also think Kylo is related to Luke, and will be the kind of bad guy that we like, because we'll feel for him a bit.

Just gut feelings, but I stand by them until something new and factual comes out.

Speaking of which... man things have dried up ever since the Finn with the lightsaber quick teaser came out. I almost think that if the real trailer doesn't come out in the next 2-3 weeks, it's gonna hurt their marketing campaign.

We don't know if that happens.. That's a rather big assumption here. Not to mention, these films are action based and are less than likely to actually show on screen the mundane things like that anyways.
