Yeah it's not even a sword it's almost a dagger (it's legolas who does this) but I had the commentary on and of all added scenes this is the only one where they speak of the rating when you think of all the other times Jackson thought an extended edition would receive an R

Episodes 8 and 9 will be PG so everything will at least be symmetrical.

Ratings are useless really. It should be up to the parents. Been watching R rated films since I was 5-6 and was never scarred by it. Parents know what their kids can/can't handle. There's nothing I personally consider brutal in any of the Star Wars films and seriously doubt there ever will be. ROTS had a couple of mildly harsh scenes but nothing brutal. The series is safe to watch for the youngest of viewers and will continue to be so no matter the rating.

For the people worrying about their young children who love star wars... guys it's only PG13 because of blood and the use of the word "hell", which is probably the worst word in it. It's star wars, there's going to be nothing in it that is totally inappropriate for a child. As others have stated, this is just because of how wussified society has become. Don't worry about it and go take your nieces, nephews and children to see it! :)

Raiders of the Lost Ark is PG? A guys face melted in that....... Somebody's head exploded in that too. TFA will not be anywhere close to that type of violence.

It's PG-13. Big Deal. It's a rather boring topic to talk about.

Jaws was PG, and that had:

    -A child getting eaten.
-A pretty graphic death scene for Quint.
    -A severed/bloody leg being shown.
    -A necropsy.
    -Disturbing imagery in general.
    -Etc.

The OT films would also probably be PG-13 if they were released today, what with the:

    -Implied scenes of torture.
    -Seeing Luke's Aunt and Uncle's burned/charred corpses.
-Seeing Obi Wan cut an alien's arm off with a lightsaber (with some blood).
-Han flat-out shoot Greedo, and his charred corpse afterward.
-Han cutting open an animal, with it's insides falling out.
-Luke getting his hand cut off and screaming in pain.
-A lot of the pretty obvious sexual innuendo in Jabba's palace, including Leia in the gold metal bikini.
    -Etc.

If the Marvel/DC films keep getting PG-13, then the OT films would as well.

I saw Titanic in theatres with my parents, and I was 7 at the time. My dad and I also saw Black Hawk Down in theatres and I was 12.

TFA getting a PG-13 ... There's one rumored scene alone that would warrant that rating.

    Does the rating really matter?

I'll use this occasion to point out the fact that my favorite film (which I now get to plug!) Lawrence of Arabia is rated PG. They use similar language "damn/hell/bloody." There's lots of blood (Lawrence staring at his bloodied hand/dagger is one prominent example) and lots of violence, shooting, death -- unsurprising, given that it's a war film. There's a scene of torture/implied rape.

So if that's PG, I'm sure anything that's in Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be fine for children.

The only scenes that might genuinely be disturbing to kids in the Saga so far are maybe the scenes of Anakin burning alive.

I'd say the brutal death of Han at the hands of his own son would probably warrant that PG-13 rating. Assuming this is anything more than a rumor, anyway.

PG-13 didn't exist when Raiders came out in theaters. In fact, Temple of Doom was one of the movies that warranted this new rating to be created

By today's standards, every film in the OT would have a PG-13 movie. And ANH might even be an R, due to the severed arm and red blood (LOTR, for example, had to use black orc blood in order to avoid an R rating).

Wasnt Revenge of the Sith rated pg13??

And what warrants a pg13 rating anyway? Its basically PG so who cares. So uncle Owens smoking skull body is still PG?? Im confused...or drunk. Probably the later

Are you joking? PG films have had plenty of blood and violence historically. There is no way anyone would ever give ANH an R rating.

Well I'm going to take this as a great sign considering how the only other Star Wars film with a PG-13 rating turned out!

I've let my 3 year old daughter watching Revenge of the Sith and Anakin gets set on fire. It didn't upset her at all. She loves Guardians of the Galaxy too.

What I don't get though is how a movie like Star Wars is PG-13 but so is Anchorman 2 where there is all kinds of swearing and adult humor. I am a big believer in "simple is better" but for once I think it be wise if they added on a PG-10 rating as well since this is what Star Wars really deserves since it might too intense for a little tike (my kids are 5 so I might make them skip this) but anyone who is like 9 and beyond would be fine and have PG-13 for movies with more crude humor/swears.

Indeed probably thanks to Anakin burning on Mustafar and I guess Child Killing.

If they didn't make slight edits to some of the deaths in the Original Trilogy, all 3 would've been re-rated PG-13 in 1997.

Yeah the only reason Star Was was not rated PG-13 back in 1977 was due to the rating not existing.

It's really not a big deal in way shape or forum. The top three biggest grossing films of all time are all PG-13 so it won't effect box office potential as I really don't think a lot of parents with 10 year olds will go "ehhhhhh it's PG-13 therefore you cannot see it". That doesn't account for little tikes. Again I have 5 year old boys so I was leaning towards passing (at least until I see it first) regardless of it being PG or PG-13. The rating being PG-13 had no barring on me take a more cautious approach of not letting them see it in the theater or at minimum, I see it first.
