So in the other thread I had this exchange with Doggy:

To which I now feel compelled to ask: Well then, why ever not? Is it the in-your-face action beats, the goofy sense of humor, the use of 20th century white-boy rap music? Please to explain.

Well, based on the trailer they have to abandon the JJ Enterprise. I say good riddance to it. Anyways, I'm up for an ensemble adventure but this does seem a little bit more like Guardians of the Galaxy and less Star Trek. I guess we will have to wait and see what the actual plot is......

Because it seems like Lin and co don't know what made Star Trek Star Trek. Action films they are not.

Apparently they want to make it more like Guardians of the Galaxy. What exactly is wrong with it being like Star Trek?

Because the last several "real Trek" movies bombed and were critically panned and everyone hated them? Just spitballin' here.

By several I assume you mean two?

And you are blaming that on them being Trek, rather than poor stories and poor films in general (Although I like Insurrection).

The Trek and the Furious: Generic Sci-Fi Dystopian Action Flick with a Vaguely Recognizable Brand Veneer

Nemesis was a terrible, shallow copy of Wrath of Khan... and JJ Abrams made two more of them.

Make a good one then, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. I refuse to believe that you can't make a decent Trek movie without turning it into some dumb, loud, brash action flick with one-liners about as funny as haemorrhoids.

I mean from the studio's perspective. I personally enjoy the more thoughtful, slower moving stories that TNG and TOS generally provided. But from the POV of an investor in a $150M global sci-fi franchise, I can understand the tendency to want to see some security in their investment. Hence, big action, 'splosions and crowd-pleasing humor. But I get you, I see what you mean now. You don't like the action-oriented direction the series has taken.

I'm seeing lots of people jumping, and 'splosions. What is this, Beytrek?

Yes. I'm not opposed to action films, but...

How would you define a good Star Trek movie?

No, you don't. I like action. My top three Trek films are The Wrath of Khan, The Undiscovered Country and First Contact. My favourite Trek series is DS9. Now admittedly it's a 90 second teaser. It could turn out that the film has more depth than the puddle that's been presented so far. But this is their opening gambit. As far as I'm concerned it's one that's failed spectacularly.

The Bones/Spock transport moment was the best part of the trailer. I liked the "frontier pushes back" line too. I'm fine with the Beastie Boys music since it appeared in both previous films (one can just assume the BB had a resurgence in popularity from a recent anthology rerelease or something- like what happens with the Beatles every 10 years or so). Bonus points for it seeming to mostly not take place on Earth. Extra bonus points for destroying the JJprise.

The rest doesn't click, IMO- particularly the random motorcycle jump.

I mean, it is a teaser, but we aren't really given an idea about what the actual story concept is centered around other than "crew trapped on alien world for some reason". It even lacks a general theme or aspirational base notion like the Trek 11 teasers.

    Good "Recent" Star Trek Films:

    Star Trek First Contact
    Galaxy Quest
    Star Trek (2009)

    Bad "Recent" Star Trek Films:

    Star Trek Insurrection
    Star Trek: Nemesis
    Star Trek Into Darkness

I'm hearing bad things about this teaser already... :p

I think the biggest problem is that Trek has never been perfectly suited for a big-budget film, let alone in this current climate where studios want their branded properties to make a bajillion dollars and appeal to audiences around the world who may not want to read subtitles and have different cultural sensibilities, etc. That means making things boring and generic. Hell, what I think is probably by far the best big-budget/action film of 2015, Fury Road, may not get a sequel because Chinese censors wouldn't let it play because it actually ****ing had something to say.

Aye, there are a couple of things that are slight glimmers of hope. Firstly they've remembered that McCoy exists, which is already an improvement on Into Darkness. Secondly they're seemingly destroying the JJ-Prise. Hopefully the next one will be more in line with the Constitution-class refit.

No, I don't what? I was having a conversation with Diggy. I appreciate your clarifying your own position. May I ask, if you like the action-oriented aspects of Trek, what about this new trailer suggests poor quality to you?

This is the part that I really wonder as to why they didn't expound on that. Why is the frontier pushing back?
That was perhaps my one gripe about what was shown, besides what I said above. I mean, why? I guess Lin had to incorporate his roots some how....

I've watched the trailer twice to give it a fair chance. I don't know about the movie, but I'm sure the trailer is what Shakespeare had in mind when he wrote, "It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

To be fair, McCoy had the torpedo surgery scene in STID, plus a few good lines here and there.

As for the ship- hopefully the Vengeance's design elements hint at aspects Starfleet is developing for their next line of ships, since there were definitely aspects of the Refit to be seen on there (as well as Excelsior and, well, Sovereign, details).

I agree- I really hope that is what the film is focusing on. If that's the case, a few more details surrounding that could have given this trailer a much-needed through line that would have potentially made it a good, effective, trailer.

It would be funny if this is the result of Kirk's prime directive violation at the start of STID.

"Turns out those guys are REALLY good at building stuff they see..."

(Oh, crap- it IS Galaxy Quest 2!)

Apologies, I thought you were responding to my post just before yours.

The quality isn't my issue, the content is, namely the motorcycle chase/jump and the stick-twirling, kunk-fu aliens. But more than that, it's the tone of the whole thing that feels off. It strikes me as more of a generic action movie rather than a Star Trek film.
