I do not see a situation in which a character does not at least attempt to give ownership to Chewie. Whether or not he accepts it is one thing. Keep in mind that someone else could pilot it, without owning it.
In the movie I saw, it was obvious that Rey inherited the Falcon from her dad Han. She also inherited custodianship of a Wookiee lifedebt.
I just looked it up. Captain Poppycosh is Han's father's, brother's, nephew's , cousin's, former room mate.
From TFA: The Visual Dictionary: "Over the years, the Falcon has switched hands from Lando Calrissian to Solo, from Solo to Ducain, from Ducain to the Irving Boys, from the Irving Boys to Unkar Plutt, from Unkar Plutt to Rey, and back to Solo." So, it's already passed out of Rey's hands and back into Solo's. I would guess that given Leia's still married to him, she's probably his heir in the absence of any particular will - and thus, its owner.
We clearly need a lengthy scene at the GFFA DMV to sort this all out. I bet there is no serial number or a legal title for the piece of junk/garbage ship.
I think Chewie, which seem obvious but I don't think we'll see him pilot it. Also Rey'll be training with Luke so I'm hoping (BIG hope) Poe pilots it. He's a killer pilot & has a personality that could fit well with Chewie, maybe add in BB-8 and you got a rockin' team.
Without question, it's Chewie. He "lived" on that thing for years. It's literally his "home". I'll be a bit surprised if Rey turns out to be the new co-pilot. I figured Finn would probably be the one to be Chewie's new co-pilot......once he actually learns how to pilot a ship, of course.
Because Rey was in the pilot's seat, my guess is that she's the new captain. Ownership is a strong word in Star Wars. Take R2 and C-3PO, for example. They were sort of shared by multiple people. Unless there's a title that Lando gave to Han for the ship, it's probably a grey area as to who "owns" the Falcon. And assuming that marriage in Star Wars is the same as it is on Earth, if Han did have the title to the Falcon, it would probably fall to Leia, who most likely would not need it and would pass it to Chewie or Rey.
I haven't read the novelization, but I think the falcon should go to Chewie. It was home to Han and Chewie for decades. Rey only had it for about an hour. As for the captain's chair, is it possible that han's chair is the only one Rey can sit in when Chewie is there? He's a lot bigger, and I would assume he would need a larger chair than Han or Rey.. I find it interesting that Han offered Rey a job on the falcon, just as he offered one to Luke in ANH, when Han was preparing to leave right before the death star battle.
It's likely Chewie's ship now. Whether he considers himself the new captain or a co-pilot without a captain is up for debate. One thing's for sure, he's probably not gonna let anyone he doesn't know or trust sit in that captain's chair. He'd sooner let R2 take the helm. Or more accurately try to pilot the whole damned thing himself. I could see him letting Rey take that position, though. Rey as captain, and himself, Finn, and Poe as co-pilots. He might find it very comforting.
It's not because of the size of the chairs. A big deal is made out of the fact that Chewie is letting her captain the Falcon. Rey can't believe it, asks Chewie whether he's serious and is completely moved by the gesture.
Yeah, and that's another thing that points towards her being Luke's daughter. I thought the person who noted the names- sKYwalker soLO= Kylo and skYwalkER=Rey was pretty clever too. I think Chewie might consider the ship to belong to him and whoever he cares about. He cares about Rey a lot. And he always was affectionate towards Luke as well, except when they had first met and Luke tried to put the binders on him.
