Both Yoda and Obi-Wan recognized that they could not defeat the Emperor—hence, they went into exile rather than challenging him. Therefore, Luke would have had to surpass Obi-Wan and Yoda if he was to defeat the Emperor. But Luke couldn’t have surpassed Yoda by ROTJ—he only trained under him for a few weeks. Knowing that Luke was weaker than him (and therefore, weaker than the Emperor), why did Yoda, and Kenobi, encourage Luke to confront the Emperor in ROTJ? (I like the theory that Yoda/Obi-Wan knew Luke would turn Vader, and that they could defeat the Emperor together; but this theory is decisively contradicted by statements by Obi-Wan, in which he encourages Luke to kill Vader, whom he describes as irredeemable.)
They don't send him to fight Palpatine. They tell him to confront Vader, but warn him to not underestimate Palpatine.
They're having him go on his own path. They're REALLY REALLY REALLY go with the flow in the OT, rather then actually doing stuff themselves like in the PT.
I think Luke had lots of training between TESB and ROTJ. Also Vader and Sidious are old and not as powerful as they were in ROTS. And as others said he was to confront Vader. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
Yeah, they didn't tell Luke to kill the Emperor, only to face Vader. I really think Yoda and Obi-Wan are just following what they feel the will of the force is there. They know Luke has to face Vader again, but beyond that they're just going on faith that it'll work out.
What do those quitters know anyways. Apparently Yoda gives up after one failure and goes to live in a swamp.
I agreed. They probably viewed Vader as a threat to turning Luke to the dark side, albeit far less likely after TESB, and they certainly considered him a mobile threat to the Rebel Alliance. I don't know if Obi-Wan and Yoda had the foresight to know that Sidious would be sitting on his throne on the Death Star and that the Alliance was going to target it, but it's possible that they believed it would take an entire starfleet to destroy Sidious. While we all fondly remember Anakin/Vader's act to save Luke from the Emperor's wrath, it should be noted that he effectively prevented Sidious from escaping the Death Star. Had Sidious finished Luke off, I imagine he would have sensed what was going on and swiftly fled the station.
You seem to forget the whole Han rescue and eliminating Jabba the Hut from the galaxy. Luke had plenty of training. Maybe he learnt it on the fly. All those fighter classes in the Rebel Alliance. Leia may have shown him a few moves or even Chewie might have sparred with him.
Luke Skywalker is a new hope (our last hope says Obi-Wan in ESB) because he is the son of Anakin Skywalker/Vader. He is potentially very strong in the Force, as was his father. Probably more than both Yoda and Obi-Wan. So in-universe, he can possibly destroy Vader and the Emperor, who foresaw this (ESB). That's basically why Ben watches after him and wants to train him as a Jedi in ANH. That is also why Yoda and Obi-Wan tell/send him to confront Vader again in ROTJ, and therefore the Emperor. Of course, I'll admit his teaching and training time seems too short, movie-wise, to allow Luke to fulfill his potential and compete with the Emperor. But at that time, during the OT era, Lucas himself was probably unsure about how long a Jedi was supposed to be trained. So this can be roughly rationalized. Nitpicking here. If he faces Vader again, he will have to confront the Emperor one way or another. That's why he is warned not to underestimate his powers (or he'll be turned to the dark side or destroyed).
I'm not sure. Ben and Yoda were "mindset" that Luke was going to encounter Vader in another duel, possibly on the forest moon of Endor. Instead the lad decided to surrender to the first AT-AT that crossed his path and had himself delivered unarmed to Vader, hoping to turn his father. Alternately, I can't shake the suspicion that Ben and Yoda were applying a lot of reverse psychology, i.e. telling Luke things he was supposed to do but knowing he wouldn't listen anyway: YODA This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away... to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing. Hmph. Adventure. Heh! Excitement. Heh! A Jedi craves not these things. (turning to Luke) You are reckless! Luke looks down. He knows it is true. Yoda had trained Jedi for several centuries and "watched" Luke grow up on Tatooine. Given his knowledge he probably knew very well which "buttons" to push. The whole "Leia is your sister" relevation is very noteworthy, IMHO. Why even tell Luke, knowing this information could become his demise? To me it rather looks they deliberately provided Luke with this information, aware that Vader would learn about this, too, which then would have compelled Luke to react the way he did.
ROTJ : - Yoda : "One thing remains : Vader, you must confront Vader.......And confront him you will" - Ben : 'Luke, you cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again" Regarding the reverse psychology you refer to, if not impossible, it's really too much over-psychologisation for me here. Moviewise and storywise, Yoda and Ben apparently think Vader is unredeemable and cannot be turned back to the good side ("He's more a machine now than a man..."). Nothing really suggests the contrary onscreen. Of course, Luke doesn't think so, and they're ultimately proven to be wrong. That's what makes the end of the story and the whole movie really emotional and powerful.
I imagine it's more to do with, They wouldn't even get close enough to the Emperor to challenge him. Yoda knows his initial fight with Palpatine was his only shot. When Yoda falls down, he knows by the time he can get back to palpatine the place would be swarming with Clone Troopers. It's safe to assume that Palpatine would be well guarded, The only reason Luke get's close enough is because of Palpatine's arrogance that he can turn him to the Darkside.
That's correct but Luke isn't nearly powerful enough to take on the Emperor. YODA Luke...Luke...Do not...Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father's fate, you will. Luke, when gone am I (cough), the last of the Jedi will you be. Luke, the Force runs strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned, Luke... (with great effort) There is...another...Sky...Sky...walker. Again, I'd say Ben and Yoda merely expected Luke to confront Darth Vader and kill him. Then, Luke would have hopefully trained Leia to become a full Jedi like himself and together they'd be a match for the Emperor, someday.
"Why Did Yoda and Obi-Wan send Luke to Fight the Emperor in ROTJ?" There was no one else that stood a chance against them.
Yoda and Obi Wan seriously dropped the ball by not telling Luke about Palpatine and his force lightning and that he could use his lightsaber to deflect it.
Yoda and/or Obi-wan get within 12 parsecs of Palpatine. They HAD to know there was at least a chance Luke could turn Vader otherwise the best course of action is "Luke, go train Leia and for Force sake, don't tell her who she really is! Once you have her trained up, go find Vader, he will take you to the Emperor. Then do what you must." The timeline was forced on Luke by the rebel alliance, not Yoda.
