I just had a look at the original teaser from the end of 2014. Back in the first teaser we see Kylo Ren advance in the snowy forest on the Starkiller base planet and then light up his unique saber. He has hood up and I presume his helmet on. Unfortunately this scene was omitted from the film but does that suggest that the scenes with Han that preceded the forest fight were changed? There is now a debate whether his helmet will return in 8 due to it being dropped on the bridge. Does the removal of this scene have significance as he obviously didn't have the helmet in the final cut? He also seems to walking freely to so does that also suggest other scenes were amended? Please pop this in one of the Kylo threads. I couldn't find the main one
It's not uncommon for different versions of certain scenes to be filmed and then put into the trailers. And then of course many scenes get cut during editing. I really hope the blu-ray has a lot of that extra footage.
He also has his hood up and since its from the back, I don't think you can assume that he's wearing the mask.
Pretty sure this was specially for the Annie Leibovitz photo shoot. That's her arm in the foreground.
part of the discussions being had revolves around the things Han and Rey said to Kylo about the mask perhaps leaving an impression, especially now that he as actual scars. Speculation abounds about whether he'll have a new helmet, a new design or even a more minimalist one that just covers the newly scarred areas....lotsa possibilities ha.
Isnt his helmet part of the uniform of the knights of ren? Id think if he wants or has to wear the helmet going forward then hed just be able to go back to the Ren HQ/lodge/locker room/merch store and pick up a new one. Maybe he has a chest full of spare Ren gear in case he loses em. He obviously has spare electronics in his quarters with how he destroys them with abandon. Correct me if im wrong but thats what ive gathered from what ive seen of the KoRen.
The weirdest continuity error is Kylo doesn't have the cowl killing Han and he has on it in the forest.
There is another similar error earlier in the movie: while Kylo Ren is talking to Snoke after the interrogation with Rey he has the cowl on/mask off. While stomping down to collect Rey he has mask on/cowl off. When he discovers she is missing and has his flip out moment he has mask on/cowl on.
If he does have a helmet in the future then it can't be identical to his old one. Unless they show him going into his closet where he has 10 of them lined up and he just picks one up and puts it on. I have a feeling that his mask will evolve parallel to his character. I think in Episode VIII it's gonna look a lot more like Vader's.
To me, the helmet issue is way over thought. He just pops down to Evil Helmets R Us and gets a new one. Maybe he bought the other one with a BOGO coupon.
If the First Order has the resources to produce a planet-sized weapon, they can probably devote a line item in the budget to a second mask for Kylo Ren.
Anybody remember the scene in Blade 3 where Dracula goes into the goth store? It's gonna be like that. Kylo, messed up and still dripping bacta, lurches into a Ren 'r' Us franchise on the First Order capital planet. Rips the 100% authentic Kylo Ren(c)(r)(tm) mask off the top shelf, scattering boxes and action figures everywhere. The startled salespeople ring it up for him. Kylo slams a handful of coins/chits on the counter and tells them to keep the change. Walks off without another word, already fitting the mask on. Silence in the store. Then: "Was that...? What happened to his face? Did you see his—" "No. And neither did you."
I would expect to see a new mask very similar to Vader's, or perhaps even a facial prosthetic very similar to the cyborg-esque concept art that is out there. What I would LOVE to see - and what honestly I think should have been done for the Vader reveal in ROTS - is for him to wear the mask of the McQuarrie concept Vader.
