I only know Phantom of the Opera from the soundtrack and because one of my besties is a huge fan, I don't know Labyrinth at all. I only like Beauty and the Beast because Belle, at least in the Disney movie, is a great character. Put her in a non-romance story and I'd feel the same way.

Christine leaves with Raoul at the end of Phantom- she loves Erik but is in love with Raoul.

Labyrinth has Sarah tell Jareth he has no power over her, she leaves.

Beauty and the Beast is the closest to a Stockholm Syndrome/Lima Syndrome.

But in TFA, when Rey is captured, she does not show sympathy or love for Kylo- in fact she actively attacks him. There is no Stockholm Syndrome there.

I just saw Kylo Ren's spotify list....here are some of the lyrics of one song....Reylo shippers rejoice....:D

She wears a butterfly on her wrist
But she might as well cut it's head off
She's holding out for weapons to kill the ghost inside
Or at least kill the thought she has of killing her mind
she says "I love you" with her hands, she says "I hate you" with her eyes

Theres a pretty girl somewhere, with a pretty name
But I could never let you know how much this means
I swear we'll end this war, cause we both know
    It wasn't worth fighting for

I wear God's name up by my wrist but she might as well tear my skin off
She's letting go convictions, to release the ghost inside
To release all the suffering of a cross and a girl
I sing "I love you" way too much, so I'll say "I hate you" for tonight

Beauty and the Beast is messed up, no doubt. And yet, I've seen the movie many times and paid twice to see the stage production. It's twisted as hell though. Belle is a fantastic character, totally agree on that one. Except for the part where literally for no reason whatsoever she starts liking the beast. That story is very, very, very Stockholmy. So is Phantom of the Opera, which is also riveting and I also paid to see it in the theater. Haven't seen Labyrinth.

I get why people are making those comparisons, but I know I don't want that for Rey, even as a fan of two of the stories. That is pretty much the exact opposite of what I want for her, and what she deserves.

In Labyrinth she never falls in love, instead, her final act is to destroy him and his castle saying: "You have no power over me".
(I guess it's all symbolical, and she's getting over her fantasy or whatever.) And it's still a compelling love story.

    RIP Bowie.
Other comparisons are Revan and Bastilla and Mara Jade and Luke

As to the Twilight and 50 Shades comparison, I'm willing to bet most of the people who are making these comparisons don't even know what those novels and movies are about. (I don't know much either, but hey, I'm not sticking my neck out with a comparison I can't support).

A well thought out comparison, on why there are similar themes, similar scenes, similar undertones would be interesting and contribute to the discussion, even if it was to say (based on arguments) why a potential love arc between Rey and Kylo would not be a good thing. But still, those works are really popular, aren't they?

I've watched the first Twilight and my biggest problem is not the fact that she likes a vampire, because he's a good, well behaved vampire who keeps his instincts in check. So the comparison bad guy= Twilight doesn't work for me. My problem with Twilight is that the protagonist is incompetent, clumsy, useless, and dumb. She walks into danger because she's dumb. She has no goal in life other than her gorgeous boyfriend. Her attraction for him is not even based on some kind of connection, but on the fact that he is rich and good looking. Her only accomplishment is catching the guy. I think that's terrible. 50 Shades is a Twilight fanfic, so I'm assuming it goes on the same vein.

But incompetent is the last word anyone would use to describe Rey, so the comparison goes out the window. Rey does not depend on any guy to accomplish anything, and her goal in the movie is certainly not to catch a guy. The comparison does not work.

But you can see where the frustration comes from then, since the examples actually used are being ignored. I actually asked if there were those not familiar with dark romances, waaaay back, and never got an answer. It is a conversation in two languages it seems.

So, are you trying to say that Rey doesn't know Han is Kylo's father, or not? I'm confused over here. I'm skeptical, to say the least.

Kylo says that she sees Han as the father she never had. Then he tells her that Han would have disappointed her. Something tells me she could do the math on that one. Not to mention, whether she heard the exchange between Han and Kylo or not (and I felt that she could, and at the very least heard Han yell "Ben!"), she saw Han stupidly approach Kylo.

Nevermind, you don't need to tell me, it is obvious that Rey picked up on the connection.

I think she learns Kylo is Han's son when she sees them on the bridge. They start talking and she looks surprised. (At least that's what I remember)

    From the script:

Finn and Rey get to a railing
and look down. They can SEE and HEAR Han and Kylo Ren on
    the catwalk below.

    ...

    KYLO REN
No. The Supreme Leader is wise.
UP ABOVE, Finn, Chewie and Rey watch, rapt. Stormtroopers

dot the perimeter of the structure, watching the scene.

    On Rey's list:

    Adonis baby
    Jumping frames in strobing light
    Fingertips drip down my spine
Cruel desire, danger in our consequence
You look my way and I lose my
Hey, you wanna rule the world?
Outlaw love, make you lose control
Hey, hey, boy you got me like whoa
    White hot, adrenaline baby
In my veins, you got me praying
    Whoa, whoa, whoaaaa

    My pretty blue lips begging
Take me, I need you in my bloodstream
    Hold me, break me
My breath is for holding, overdose me
I need you in my bloodstream
Hold me, break me, break me

Lucid reverence, floating in your sacred sin
Need your fire against my skin
Cosmic violence, chills dripping like acid rain
Keep coming back 'cause it's you I crave
Hey, you wanna rule the world?
    Desperado, take control
Hey, hey, boy you got me like whoa
    White hot, adrenaline baby
In my veins, you got me praying
    Whoa, whoa, whoaaaa

Other comparisons made were to pairings in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Angel/Buffy and Spike/Buffy. Neither of those have any similarities to Stockholm syndrome.

Funny that we're talking about Beauty and the Beast (one of my favorite movies of all time, not surprisingly), because aside from the obvious themes that a Kylo/Rey romance would have in common with that story (Stockholm syndrome not being one of them, lol), when I was watching TFA I noticed that there were a few notes in Rey's theme that are reminiscent of the prologue music in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Here is Rey's theme (The Scavenger) scroll to 0:53

Here is the Beauty and the Beast prologue.

I obviously don't think it's anything more than a coincidence, but it's still pretty cool. n_n

A little while back, I posted this:;)

Another clue about Rey/Kylo, perhaps o_O
Did you know that Disney has partnered with Spotify? There is a playlist of songs curated by the company for each character.. And I just listen to Rey's playlist. Here some songs with extracts lyrics:

Adele - Set fire to the rain:
"I let it fall, my heart
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my lips and you saved me"
Selena Gomez - Come & Get It :
"Can't stop because I love it
hate the way I love you"

    Transviolet - Bloodstream:
"Cruel desire, danger in our consequence
You look my way and I lose my
Hey, you wanna rule the world?"

    Rihanna - We found love
    "It’s the way I’m feeling I just can’t deny
But I’ve gotta let it go
We found love in a hopeless place"

Lana del Rey (haha) - Blue Jeans:
Walked into the room you know you made my eyes burn
It was like James Dean - for sure
You so fresh to death and sick as cancer
    [...]
That love is mean, and luv hurts
But I still remember that day we met in December - oh baby!

... And Kylo Ren's playlist is also weird.

    Savages - The Answer
"Love is the answer I'll go insane"

A day to remember - Out of time
    "I’ve never felt so sober
I’ve never felt the low that I feel tonight
Your words made everything drag on and on
    I finally found her,
and when I did I just couldn’t make things right.
    Is this really happening?
Oh God I think I just ruined my life"

    Muse - Dead inside
    "Feel me now
    Hold me please
I need you to see who I am
    Open up to me
    Stop hiding from me
    It's hurting babe
Only you can stop the pain"

It's maybe insignificant. But why Disney would leave songs of impossible love if that did'nt have a meaning? :p

I think it's an interesting idea you're throwing out there. I've seen many people who believe or hope that's the direction Kylo is going, which adds to their horror to any possible romantic connection between Kylo and Rey.

Personally, if that happens, it will be retcon and bad writing. Why would he be jealous that she got the lightsaber? As I've posted this already, when it went to her, he didn't look angry or upset, but impressed. He didn't even get mad at her when she found his deepest darkest fear. Try to imagine what that means. Everyone has a touchy spot, she poked his most vulnerable spot. He should have had an angry reaction towards her, but no, he was curious, intrigued.

Now that she's ruined his pretty face and maybe his cool lightsaber, he might have different feelings towards her, but to become ruthless would be strange. As to his viciousness, in the two scenes when Hux orders the Starkiller to fire, he doesn't seem to be in agreement with Hux. And then there's all his pull to the lightside, and the fact he felt terrible after killing Han.

Can he become totally evil? Sure. But that would be bad writing. Again, this is not to justify a possible attachment between Rey and Kylo, I'm not sure that can happen, but I hope Kylo has an interesting arc, and going bad and badder is a little boring.

Adding one more from Rey's playlist...

    Omen- Radio Edit
It's an omen, caught my baby crying
    Saw the silver lining
    It must be an omen
Needed you to show me, without you I am lonely

My mind would rule my heart
I didn't pay attention to the light in the dark
    It left me torn apart
But now I see your tears as an omen

I have read all four Twilight books, and Fifty Shades started as Twilight fan fiction but got creepier, so yeah, I know what they are about.

No, I'm not sure where the frustration comes from, because people have described plot points along the lines of "dark brooding character" and "mysterious protagonist with a dark past" and "conflicted Kylo" and they aren't really selling points for why this would be good or enjoyable to a viewer who is just watching these movies for fun.

    What?
    Light in the dark?
    Torn apart?
    Tears?
Isn't it obvious who this is referring to?
And this is in Rey's playlist?

But see, the marketing department at Disney can be trolls. The question is whether they just want to tease us or if it is reflective of the direction of the plot.

But anyone saying romantic undertones and the possibility of a romantic arc between Kylo and Rey are products of our imagination needs to rethink their position.
Or else people at Disney have the same type of imagination .

And you believe Rey and Kylo is similar to Twilight? How so? Isn't the sparkly vampire what's his pretty face a pretty decent guy? Isn't Bella dumb and incompetent? I can't wrap my head around the comparison.

Is it because Bella likes the vampire cause he's good looking? I don't think we believe Rey should become interested in Kylo for his looks, as awesome as they are, but, if she ever becomes interested in him, which would require a fantastic plot development, it would rather be because of their connection and because they are both strong in the force. Still, she doesn't need to ever become interested in him for a romantic arc to happen.

Is it because the sparkly vampire has the potential to hurt, even kill Bella? Isn't it different from Kylo and Rey? Rey is not helpless, she can defend herself. In fact, she had the potential to kill him and almost did.

I'm really curious. Since you know well Twilight, what's the similarity between those books and a potential love arc between Rey and Kylo?
