    Confession:

Despite having insisted for years that AotC is not only the worst Star Wars film but one of the worst films ever, I came to the startling realisation that I actually enjoy it quite a bit more than RotS.

I also enjoyed ANH more than TESB this time around, which leads me to believe that I was perhaps replaced by a not-quite-identical clone within the last year.

Then I have to ask how dragons in your world looks like since I can not image how the crotch protecting piece are not in the way, or is it that they use saddles that are rather different from the common model?

AOTC isn't so terrible once you look past the love story dialogue- just like all the prequels, though, it suffers from editing problems and story focus resulting from trying to tell a multi-film story arc without planning it out in advance.

The IMAX cut of AOTC was actually quite snappy and gives more of an OT pacing and is what inspired my own fan edit version I made awhile back. I think it helped the film tremendously (but, then, I'm obviously biased since it's my own edit).

It also works better when you realize, given TPM's disconnection to the other films, that AOTC is effectively the true beginning/introduction of the film saga.

Oh, the IMAX cut had to be compressed, right? What did they take out?

I admittedly haven't watched it in a while, but the more time goes by the less I like basically any part of that movie. Every time Obi says "my young Padawan" I want to weep for his character. Even the action material just feels...lifeless. Having TFA to compare it to now certainly doesn't help.

Meanwhile, I see TPM more and more fondly because it's so completely its own little thing--the action and dialogue aren't any more interesting or clever than the others, but the stakes are lower so it's not as noticeable--it feels like the only prequel that's punching its own weight and not playing at something out of its league. It's like The Hobbit (the book, naturally, not the movies) to II and III's LotR; a little side adventure that sets up the Big Story but isn't subject to that story's higher expectations.

Any clue when this will be out? It sounds interesting so I'm willing to give it a go.

Yeah, IMAX reels had a max capacity of 2 hours at the time (I think they removed the limit a year or two later). I don't remember every change but right off the bat they compressed the credits into a quick slideshow.

Cut scenes include the initial meeting between the Jedi and Palpatine, meeting Jar Jar at the elevator and the awkward reintroductions, the meadow scene, a lot of smaller moments between Anakin & Padme (Anakin floating the ball)- the fireplace scene is half as long (and a huge improvement), the library scene, most of Dorme's scenes/lines, the awkward nightmare, Obi-Wan setting up his message, Jar Jar manipulated by Palpatine, some small bits with Threepio on Tatooine and the droid factory (like 3PO's inserted wild ride- now he just falls like he did originally).

Other scenes had small trims to their intro/exit or small moments- Dooku interrogating Obi-Wan, Boba firing Slave I's guns, the fake-out molten spill, etc. There are others but I don't remember them all.

I didn't use all of them in my cut (some trims were clearly for time concerns rather than redundancy or spectacle concerns) but they made for a good starting point and opened up some runtime for me to balance a reinserted deleted scene or two. I also rearranged the Kamino tour to match the script so that it flows less abruptly into the subsequent Naboo scene and split up the Geonosis & Tatooine scenes differently to eliminate the confusion their similarities were causing. But those weren't things done to the IMAX cut.

Looking back, though, I think I could be a little less merciful if I were to take a second pass at it (which I might one day- though I've had long-gestating plans for TPM that I really want to try first).

I mostly cut those out of my version (shortened the one line to "Good call!") though I left one in just because my friends and I quoted that often as the super-cheesy equivalent to ANH's "Toche Station" whinery.

Just trying to reinforce your opinion, since a lot of people have also favoured TPM for those very reason over the other two PT movies. ;)

I certainly think there was a degree of anti-hype working in its favour for me, this time around. I have thought AotC was so irredeemably terrible, for so long, that it was basically impossible for it to live up to being THAT bad.

Whereas RotS starts out pretty well but then bungles everything with the "power to save Padme" nonsense and toad!Palpatine. I'll need to reread the novel to wash away the taste.

TPM is a lovely little film, yeah. Imperfect but it holds up.

My issues with it have more to do with OT continuity (Obi-Wan not reflecting the student of Yoda described in TESB) than anything else.

I don't even mind Jar-Jar. The battle droids having silly voices and mannerisms bothers me more.

And I like that SLJ actually bothers to play Mace Windu, instead of playing himself in a bathrobe as he does in AotC and RotS.

    Best comment for it:

" The title of that video gives me mental images of baby Kylo Ren.

And occasionally adult Kylo Ren. "

I like the idea of adult Kylo having a tantrum and then going to his room to listen to the imperial march to calm down. :p

Thanks. It'll be out this fall.

My other books, ESOTERRORISM and THE RULES OF SUPERVILLAINY (as well as its sequel) are already out.

    My saga rewatch is complete.

I went into them with this order of preference: TESB > ANH > ROTJ >= TPM > RotS > > > > AotC

Now, however: ANH > TESB >> RotJ > TPM > AotC >> RotS

I still find it really difficult to see the prequels as the "actual backstory" once I get to ANH. They almost feel like they're leading into a remake of the OT more than they do the OT, itself.

My OT rankings are traditionally very volatile, with ANH and ESB perpetually duking it out and ROTJ occasionally taking the top spot just for Endor.

But with TFA, I think that TFA is temporarily on top with ANH/ESB to resume their titles sooner or later and ROTJ left forever behind.

You mean the Rage Mix, of course.

The thing about ROTS is that it feels like the story is finally starting and is setting up other movies before ANH. If Lucas had retitled ANH as Episode VII back in '78, it could have worked better...

Although I do get your meaning- it almost feels like it's setting up a Yoda/Sid rematch or something.
