I for one think he's in a coma to make sure we know Kylo is dangerous even if he got his butt handed to him by an untrained girl in one on one combat. Finn is a physically imposing and young/agile/strong/trained fighter - Kylo dispatched him easily, and he had to in order to retain some credibility. The other reason IS to separate him from Rey, otherwise he might have followed her to Luke's island. Just my opinion, but I'd like to hear your take on this major plot reason.

Forgive me for not having the source, but JJ did an interview awhile back and had said Rian Johnson asked him to change a few things with the final script as well as leave Finn in a coma for the next movie for plot purposes.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

I know you can't, because you're all about the Finn, but I have pointed out how he is not essential to the story. Anything he can do for the story can be done better by another character:
    - Join the resistance: done better by Poe
    - Become a Jedi: Rey's already better at that
    - Romantic pair for Rey: Ben Solo is a better choice

The only thing we lose if Finn doesn't wake up is some comedy. So Episode VIII wouldn't be as funny. Oh well.

Now, I'm not saying this would happen. They obviously want him to be a big character in this trilogy. I'm just saying that he's not important to the story and the story would just keep going right along if he never woke up.

Oh, and tagging your FinnRey buddy is cute...

Wow, it seems like this Tumblr essay is must-read, judging by everyone's comments. I'll have to get on that.

    Interesting... *strokes chin*
I still think the reasons are probably what I stated, but now I get why some of the FinnReyers claim that Finn can become force sensitive in future episodes. I was thinking short of an unlikely nuclear accident or getting bit by a force spider a la Peter Parker, Jedi-dom was not likely to be in the cards for Finn. I still think it's unlikely, but at least not IMPOSSIBLE for him to wake up from the coma with the Force somehow.

(Also, I only see your post once.)

A few reminders for this thread:

Personal attacks are never allowed. Debate the post, not the poster.

This thread is for discussing a possible Rey and Kylo relationship, not other fandom 'ships, not Finn's necessity to the plot, not a social thread, etc.

Spoilers for any other movie are not allowed in TFA. We have a 8/9 SA forum to discuss spoilers.

That essay was great, especially the in depth discussion of the bridal carry- both on how it shows how Kylo isn't thinking straight at that point and his actions are driven not by strategy and about how the audience reacts to the the prominent tropes and imagery used (Hades absconding with Persephone- one of my favorite myths)

It also touches on something I don't think we have talked about- the fairytale aspects of Rey being lost in the woods. We have our maiden in white pursued by a predator, it is red riding hood and the wolf with a red lightsaber (and we all know what swords are in media...)

I would suggest our Finn/Rey fans read it too, since it covers the Reylo motifs but also has a big section on Finn as well.

I was pleasantly surprised by the section on Finn in the reading. Some really good stuff there!

And yeah, I personally love adaptations of Little Red Riding Hood so when I started to think about it in Star Wars context, I got extremely excited. I wouldn't say it's a perfect representation, but it's still a cool thing to compare and contrast. Rey isn't totally prey in it..but at the same time, she is.

This isn't a thread about Finn. I don't think this is the place to debate this.

I remember someone mentioning that "Rey's theme" sounds like the "Beauty & the Beast" prologue & they're absolutely right, Ohtze also talked about this in her essay.

See how similar they are: Rey's theme / Prologue: Beauty & the Beast | In my opinion it's totally intentional... (fairytale reference)

Hmmm...should i point out that if it weren't for Finn, then poe would've been killed by the FO?
Hmmmmm........then i guess rey would've been tracked down (through bb-8) and also killed/captured by the FO.
Hmmmmmmm........then i guess there'd be nothing to stop them from finding luke, oh and then there's the matter of SKB.
Nahhh, better leave it alone. Things are already pretty fragile.

Little Red Riding Hood has gotten quite a few modern/feminist updates in recent years, focusing on the sexual awakening aspects of the story. Some even have a maiden with agency, who seeks out the wolf herself.

It isn't a one to one comparison, but Rey lost in the woods being sought after by Kylo with his big red lightsaber (that he holds up to her) is really close. That Rey ultimately subverts the absconding by turning the tables on Kylo and escaping just feeds into the feminist readings of these motifs that have been so prominent recently. (there are quite a few for Hades and Persephone too)

Yeah, the sexual awakening aspect of the story is partly what makes it so fascinating. All fairy tales have a variety of different meaning interpretations but Red Riding Hood is, to me, one of the most interesting ones.

I also have a ton of songs saved that are wolf/prey or Little Red Riding Hood themed and now I'm going to be picking them apart and trying to find connections to Rey and Kylo... what can I say? I love relating music to characters.

Just a curiousity, in all honesty how many people would stop shipping Reylo if it was revealed that they were cousins?

I had attached this to the Rey linage question aspect thread in the Ep. 8 and 9, because of some odd reactions to the idea of Rey and Ben Solo.

So I'm straight up curious, would this ship actually die if that turned out to be true? Also, would our ship be as large as it was if instead of Ben being the villain he was one of the hero's that was helping Rey?

ReyKenobi: Three series that came to mind to me last night for antagonist and hero Love stories, although they are anime or manga and at least one is still an on going.

Basara -it's a manga that follows the story of sasara, the twin sister of Tarara, who was supposed to be the best warrior but he was killed. She, at 15, takes up his name and goes to war with the Red King, the emperor's son Shuri who comes off as quiet brutal and cruel, and was the killer of her own twin brother. However he also shows he has a good side and can be very free spirited, and he falls in love with Sasara, however he doesn't know she's also the boy Tarara who is beating him in battles.

Glass Fleet -Much like Basara it deals with the idea of a woman taking over her late brother's role, the girl, Racine, is dressed as Michel who was the Robin hood figure in this case and is fighting against the Holy empire run as of the start by a tyrant Vetti who, on the one hand is a total jerk, on the other hand there is a lot of reasons for his being a jerk. There's a third party involved, Cleo, the pirate owner of the Glass Fleet, who Racine may or may not have feelings for, and the fact that Vetti does eventually show interest in her in some very interesting ways.

Black Butler -This one sports an antihero and the love story is very light due to the ages of the characters, 13 and 14, but there's a huge amount of mystery to it and some really deep psychological angles here. You have Ciel, our dark hero, who is the son of the Earl of Phantomhive, Vincent, who is what they call the Queen's watch dog, he runs the underworld in London England and does the queens bidding. One night Vincent and his wife Rachel are killed, on Ciel's 10th birthday no less, and Ciel is taken by a demonic cult that does some very questionable things to him. During one of thieir rituals a child is sacrificed and a demon appears and decides that Ciel will be his master. Ciel makes a pack with this demon, who kills everyone there for him. Ciel wants to get revenge on his parents murders, and then will give his soul to Sebastian to eat. Sebastian being the demon, actually named after Ciel's late dog. However opposing this is Elizabeth Midford, Ciel's cousin and fiance. Lizzy is a skilled swords woman, taking on zombies and other things, and her main goal is to protect Ciel. She wants him to come back to the light. Due to the fact that this is an ongoing there is no end yet, but Lizzy and Ciel are certainly one of the top couples in this story.
