It wasn't until the 4th time I saw the movie that I realized the entire implication of Leia telling Han that if he sees him to bring him home. At first I was just thinking "oh she misses him and doesn't want him on the dark side". Embarrassed that it took the 4th time for me to realize "oh they're about to blow up SKB and she is not ready to kill her son" duh

It's not all that different than Luke refusing to give up on his father, despite all of the horrible evil things that he had done (over a longer period of time than Kylo to boot). A son not wanting to give up on his father, and a mother not wanting to give up on her son. Misguided/naïve, perhaps, tragic, oh heck yes. Understandable, absolutely.

You hope that through some redemption the person that has changed would find some way to move forward and contribute to society. Obviously for Anakin he was at his life's end and died shortly after, not being able to 'do good' but in the one act of killing the Emperor and saving his son he did what he could to right the wrongs. Kyle's redemption could be a very serious point of contention... how do you continue to live knowing what you've done, how do people who you have affected tremendously react to your being able to keep going and be, well, alive? This is something that we see everyday in the prison system/rehabilitation...

My first thoughts when I heard 'Ben' were:

    1. "Wait... was that 'Ren' or 'Ben'?!"
    2. "Ben Kenobi? But they weren't that... close to him?"
    3. "Seriously why would you use that name again in this film series anyway."
    4. "Now you've made me think of Ben Skywalker, and now I am confused."

Either way, I hate it. Weird, because they weren't that close to Obi-Wan, and thus weird because it's being used twice. There are so many other names around, ffs. I would have even preferred Harold! Reginald! Cuthbert. Anything.

I've always wonder what visual entertainment would be like in the GFFA... do that have Galactic Idol? The Amazing Space Race? Law and Order: 501st? Obviously they have Undercover Boss.

Have not read through all of this thread so if this is a dupe, sorry...

Would folks like the idea that Leia/Han did not want young Ben to train to become a Jedi? He wants to do it real bad, and starts to try and figure things out on his own... This is where Snoke gets involved, and pushes him to look at the power that was Vader. "Your parents are keeping things from you..." "See how powerful you could be". You could take Leia saying how she sent him away to Luke as she began to see his powers being used for some not so nice things and maybe Luke can help. It is too late as he has lost trust in his family and begins making the choices that ends with Kylo.

Definitely. I think it was in one of the novels where it's mentioned that Leia sensed darkness in him, and that's when she sent him to Luke. And like Han says. he had too much Vader in him. I could see a scenario where they didn't want him to be involved with the Force or the Jedi at all, but he has this power, and starts to do stuff with it. Leia senses his leaning more towards the Dark Side, and sends him to be properly trained, not because she wants too, but because she feels she has to. But it's too late. Also, she says to Han she "Lost you both" when she sent Ben away. We've all been pretty much going under the theorythat it was because Kylo turned, and then Han and Leia walked away from each other. What if it was actually because Han didn't want Ben trained at all, even with the Dark Side tendencies? And when he finds out Leia sent him to Luke anyway, he gets pissed and they separate? Perhaps this also contributes to Ben's downfall - he feels abandoned by his mother, who sent him away because he was "bad", and his father, who walked away from the family because he wants nothing to do with the Force?

    SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!

Kylo ren is by far one of the coolest siths that has lived, im not saying he is extremely power im just saying he is going to be a great villin in the future,

i cant wait to see what his new suit will look like after the fight he had with rey and finn! and im just saying that rey wouldn't have beaten him if he wasn't heavily wounded i mean he took a bolt from chewbaccas crossbolt gun which in the star wars universe is a grenade launcher!! plus he took it like a boss, then had his shoulder slides by finn and still continued to fight

i think klyo has the power to become close to Vader but not over power him

I agree that it's implied that Han and Leia may have not wanted to train Ben as a Jedi but I don't think Han and Leia split when she sent Ben away. Leia saying That's when I lost you both I think is her thinking of that time as the beginning of the end. Han's line "Every time you looked at me you saw him" explaining why he left and stayed away doesn't make sense if he wasn't around after the massacre. Han also saying "we both had to deal with it in our own ways" is clearly referring to the Jedi massacre. The Visual Dictionary says that Han didn't leave until after the Jedi Massacre. Also we know that Han and Leia are still together in Bloodlines which is 6 years before TFA and I'm betting Ben is already at Luke's Academy by then.

I do see a situation where Ben was manipulated by Snoke into disdaining his mother for being Force sensitive but not a Jedi and his father for not being Force sensitive and resenting being sent away, and that's what ultimately drives the wedge between him and his parents.

Am I missing something here? Was it not Obi Wan that essentially saved Leia's life? He gets the message, he takes Luke, he hires Han and Chewie, he takes down the Tractor Beem and Sacrifices himself to allow them all to escape.....just because they didn't "know" him personally doesn't mean he didn't mean a great deal to both Han and Leia as well as Luke. To me that seems like more than a good enough Reason to name your Son after someone....

I thought he was great, stole the show in regards to the new characters. When I saw the movie it was the first time I had seen or heard of this guy. I was so successful with my spoilers/information blackout that I didn't even know the name of the actor (or the character for that matter) until after I got home and looked him up. And since I'd never seen anything he was in, when Kylo Ren took off his mask that was the first time in my life I'd seen this guy, so that made it pretty cool. I hear people complain about him taking off his mask, or having a fit, it didn't bother me though.

Our galactic government acquiesces to disorder. It lies to the galaxy.

Today, the First Order received reliable intelligence that terrorists are about to learn the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker.

No one else knows that my own cousin, a fugitive from justice, may be helping them.

I'm Sith Lord Kylo Ren, and this is the longest day of my life.

I'm going through the audiobook and there's definitely subtle about Kylo Ren's feelings for Rey and for his mother. Snoke detects "compassion" from KR regarding Rey. KR doesn't seem too eager to blow up the planetary system that his mother is residing on.

I find it pretty curious that the Abrams and company cut out these lines. I'm guessing because they wanted KR to be more like Vader, than Anakin after his conversion in ROTS. Besides the one scene where he's talking to Vader's mask, you don't see the "call to the light" explicitly. I guess there's a tad of him wrestling with the light before he kills his father.

    Very interesting stuff.

Yep, i've found the differences between the novelisation and the film quite fascinating in that regard: makes me wonder what are dropped plot-points and what might have been cut because it gave too much of a hint about future direction?

people seem to think Kylo having to question his choices of light and dark are signs of a redemption to come, but why? they said there is going to be an evolution of a villain and it is Kylo. these moral questions just continue to show that he is CHOOSING the dark side
