Kylo Ren's looks pensive and then his eyes slowly open up and he takes a breath. That strikes me as acceptance. Shock does have wide eyes and an open mouth but the onset should be faster, and the way Kylo's mouth is moving is more indicative of taking a breath than his mouth just being agape.

I might just do that. The Tapatalk App is hounding me to review it, so that's first on the list.

Would it make sense to have a Reylo/Kylo Ren fanfic recommendation thread? I'm interested in reading quality fics based around the idea of Kylo as a nuanced character, Grey Jedi concepts, etc.

I agree thaat the SW website says he killed students....what we don't know is the circumstances that led to his killing them...was it an accident? or did he just take a lightsaber and go on a rampage? Was it one student or more?

And another point- did he kill at all or was he framed? For instance in the EU, Zayne Carrick the jedi padawan was called "Jedi Killer" even on the websites just like Kylo Ren has been called....but as later comic books were released, it turned out he was just a witness to the murders and was actually innocent.

The accident remark is just nuts. What, did he accidentally fall on each student 1 by 1 with his own lightsaber? Accidentally push them off a cliff? all at once?

The databank said "killed his fellow students". That sounds all inclusive.

The benefit of the doubt he is getting for this is off the charts. How many different EU characters can he encompass? The list continues to grow.

to me, canon is Movies first and foremost, and then Novelization. Websites, Pablo Hidalgo, Visual Guides, etc, you know, stuff that ordinary people don't know or care about, I can take or leave.

Not everything lives or dies in that hierarchy though. Some of the things lower on the canon totem pole are supplemental information that adds to it.

Just out of curiosity, when we see Kylo Ren in the rain with the Knights, as the lightening flashes, we see three monuments in the background. One large, and two the same height in opposite sides. Anyone else notice this?

No, the "big" Call to Adventure and the "big" Refusal of the Call don't necessarily have to be directly related. Just think about Rey's Journey. Her Call to Adventure comes in the form of Finn... yet her ultimate Refusal of the Call doesn't happen until she runs away from the lightsaber on Takodana. The events aren't really related. She is drawn into the story by the Catalyst, but she doesn't realize her purpose in the story until she is thrown into the Forceback by the saber. She flees that purpose, and is thus confronted all alone by Ren.

Also I doubt I'll be getting hate. It's narrative analysis, not really something people can argue with. Rey's Hero's Journey directly contrasts Ren's. Again, it was intentional. It's strange enough to consider the fact that we have a "villain" on a Hero's Journey... but then again, do we need more proof that Ren isn't really a "villain?" Rey's Journey isn't even subverted. It's as straight-up as a Hero's Journey can get.

I think you're a little confused about the steps in the Hero's Journey. You can read all about it here: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheHerosJourney

The steps aren't always going to line up perfectly. They're more "guidelines" than actual rules, to quote Captain Barbossa. Ren's Journey is actually way more straight-forward than Rey's. The word "Hero" in "Hero's Journey" is irrelevant in this regard. The fact is Ren's developmental steps line up with the trope perfectly. And Finn isn't on a Hero's Journey at all, not like Rey or Ren. I tried to apply it to him but the trope just didn't fit. He has no Ordinary World for one thing, not that we see. Finn is the Catalyst—the Herald—and nothing more. I expect that to change in Episode VIII.

I did say it was a rough draft right at the top there xD

Exactly, we do not live in Denialville. The possibility for Finn and Rey is there. Will the movies go in that direction? I don't know, this discussion belongs to another thread.

Either way, we are mainly discussing Kylo and Rey and their possibilities, which, of course, do not exclude other possibilities.

There's disagreement and then there's ridicule. You can rest assured that if Reylo ever happens, I won't be wasting my time laughing in Schadenfreude and making fun of FinnRey shippers, and I doubt any other regular posters from this thread will either. I find it baffling that you guys approach this as a game of one-upmanship. We get it, you think Reylo won't happen and people who speculate about it are idiots, but why do you care beyond that? If we're all a bunch of delusional fools who'll be proven wrong eventually, where's the harm to you? Isn't it a bit like baiting and ridiculing children who are naive enough to believe in Santa? I simply don't understand why you care.

I'm way behind here, but as the mother of a 4-year-old girl, I've seen Frozen many, many times.

And you're right--Elsa is definitely an anti-hero. One of the things I love about that movie is that it's basically a superhero origin story at its heart. There are actually quite a few parallels between Elsa and Kylo Ren, so I don't find the Disney Princess thing to be off-base with him at all.

Hi y'all. So I watched ANH this morning, and I don't know if this has been brought up before (probably has, but I'm going to say it again anyway ;)) , but my ears perked up when Obi Wan is talking to Luke before they leave Tatooine and telling him that Vader was SEDUCED by the dark side; he literally said that!

Gah! It's the whole ring/circle theory right there, Vader was seduced by the dark side, Kylo/Ben is seduced by the light.....I think we might see Kylo get worse or more unstable before he breaks down and decides to leave the FO, I think it'll take something big for him to fully commit to accepting that yes, the light does call to him, and instead of suppressing it letting go and embracing it.....after all it took a lot for Vader to turn good again, Sidious was basically in the process of killing Luke with the force lightening before Vader stepped in and stopped it....just some thoughts I've been mulling over....[face_thinking]

    [quote="Adept,

Overridden by shock and surprise. For 90% of that fight he has the upper hand (despite the loss of a major source of strength), and is content to let Rey make her choice...and then she beats him, the master of the Knights of Ren. That look on his face, that is shock. Then the ground opens up, separating the two and Rey leaves before Ren can recover. As for the lack of Yellow eyes, even Anakin didn't get them for awhile so assuming Ren would have them immediately doesn't work.[/quote]

Yeah, "shock and surprise" doesn't work either. I'm sure Anakin was "shock[ed] and surprise[d] when Obi-Wan dismembered him. It still didn't stop him from turning into this spewing, hating creature. I mean we've seen three PT movies that show what turning to the dark side really looks like. In ROTS, Anakin does not stabilize at all. The more hurt (emotional and physical) and threatened he gets, the more he descends into more hellish behavior. Ren actually stabilizes even though things keep getting worse for him. He actually shows increasing restraint as time goes on. I mean why is he even having a conversation about being her teacher? Have that conversation with her when she's handcuffed on your ship. Why give her time to "power-up" on the force when he can pull "another tree" on her (or if he's too weak to summon that much force ... though he did it a few minutes before) ... why not just knock her out with the butt of his lightsaber while her eyes are closed and she's not giving the fight her complete attention. That's just completely stupid to give her that moment if he wants to bring her back to Snoke. Just knock her out, drag her body through the snow (because he's total darkside now, so no bridal carry) and let her power-up later, only so he can see what she can do, in an environment where he makes the rules.

Do you think Mustafar Anakin would have given Obi-Wan a second for anything once the fight got going, nevermind wait while Obi-Wan thinks and powers-up for the advantage? No. Do you think Jakku Ren would have allowed that? No. The movies have shown what rapid descent into the dark side looks like. Anakin actually looks lustful and orgasmic after he is dubbed Darth Vader, and he hadn't even gone on his big killing spree yet! The darkness infusion just intoxicated him that much. Just like the darkness intoxicated the Emperor in a grotesque manner after he revealed himself to Mace. Where is Ren's intoxication? Where is Ren's orgasmic moment? It's not there ... unless of course you count that sexy staring context on the cliff side ... but Rey was a player in that too ... and frankly, that didn't look deviant like Anakin and Vader. That just looked like intense connection between two young, hot people. Big difference.

In the end, we received a textbook example of what the fall to the dark side looks like with Anakin. Anakin gains immediate power and intoxication from the dark (even though I imagine Anakin previously had used plenty of light too and frequently relied on conflict to power him pre-submission). Ren's experience is nothing like that. Why do you think a good chunk of the population walked out of the movie saying Ren was a weak, whiny d-bag who got his a** handed to him even though Rey was running from him most of the time? It's because he didn't have the dark side fall experience that everyone saw Anakin have. Anakin may have lost, but he had plenty of moments of nasty bada**ery before being cut down. Ren was decidedly lacking in such intimidating bada**ery. Sure he's injured, sure let's say he's "adjusting" to the lack of light (though Anakin did not seem to have this issue), but even with all of that he should have been in that nasty, intoxicated frame of mind the whole time.

It didn't take the force to burn Finn. It just took Ren being furious. (Curious that it's only Finn who gets real torture-type behavior, as Ren would have all kinds of misguided reason to blame Finn for bringing Han to SKB when Ren had successfully avoided his parents for years). He should have been acting equally nasty throughout that whole scene just like Anakin did. But he didn't. His reaction deviated greatly from Anakin's textbook fall case. You know why? Because Ren hadn't fallen over into total darkness like Anakin had. Ren is still in the hazy middle ground.

Don't kid yourself, I've never seen ANYBODY deny Finn's importance here. Not one person, and I've been posting here for weeks now. There is no denial, we just don't talk about Finn because—as the title expresses—this thread is about "Rey and Ren" not "Rey and Finn." There's a separate thread for Rey and Finn... though I hear it's pretty dead these days. This is simply not the place to expect people to have in-depth discussions about Finn, Rey and Finn or a Finn and Rey romance arc. It really isn't that hard to understand. If we wanted to talk about Finn and Rey we'd be in the Finn and Rey thread.

Usually this happens when fear has come to the surface.
If FinnRey was more likely to happen, (not saying it won't) I'd be posting on that thread just as much as this one.
However, since I'm sure the possibility of Reylo is there, I have no need to go to FinnRey or badger them. Saying their ship is stupid, or laughing at them or threatening to laugh at them.
If they believe it won't happen, why be babies about it? Why not just say "good luck, we'll see what happens".
No one is 100% certain of what will happen. Hate comes from fear, and the people who keep coming here from FinnRey have nothing to discuss on the FinnRey thread. Sorry if I offended anyone but honesty is the best policy.
