I work in film, I write film, it's very easy to explain a backstory with little to no dialogue and about 30 seconds of footage. with flashbacks you can jump back and forth through time, it's the most common technique used when you want to get a message across quickly. You wouldnt have to explain at all who his lover is, you would just have to explain that he is her grandfather, then the audience can put 2 and 2 together and realise that he must have had a partner, because thats how you make babies. You dont need to spoon feed them everything. You dont need to know who her grandmother is..

I think the vision will be explained in the next film and I think it will take place in the present time in the next film. Can't explain the saber in Kylo Rens hand though
If she is about to be bashed and Kylo saves her, it won't be a bad thing in my books. Just another thing to add to the infatuation he has with her, also protecting her would come into his character I think.

I'd assume something like: "You were part of the Kenobi clan..." "Kenobi?" "Obi-Wan Kenobi was my mentor. You're his grand-daughter." Or even, "Obi-Wan was a great jedi. One of the last. He was my mentor."

And you know what? They could easily just cut out Obi Wan's kids, they could have died and she is left in the hands of her grandmother who is Obi Wan's wife. It would explain something wouldnt it? Why was Rey staring at that old lady for so long on Jakku hmm? remind her of Grandma maybe?

yeah, and remember at the end of the original trilogy the audience still had no idea who Luke and Liea's mother was, her name OR the particular circumstances of their birth and how they were separated etc....those details were irrelevant to the narrative.....

Exactly, plus giving vague descriptions of what happened to Vader, left room for 3 more films to be made and since Star Wars is a gigantic franchise, I doubt they will stop with this trilogy forever, ya never know. Books come out, cartoon shows, movies etc....

We didn't know who Luke and Leia's mother was until the PT. If we tell people that she's Brobi-Wan's granddaughter, the people that want to know more details can get them in the novel. Luke could give a brief explanation: "during Brobi-Wan's time in exile on Tatooine, he ran into an old friend, Bo Katan Kryze. Brobi-Wan, having lost his padawan and best friend to the darkside, most of his friends to the Jedi purge, and master Yoda to exile, was lonely. He enjoyed the company of an old friend, and they had a brief, but intense relationship. And then, she had to leave Tatooine for good. Unbeknownst to Brobi-Wan, Bo Katan left while pregnant with a son. Bo Katan was afraid that Brobi-Wan would be swayed from his mission of bringing back the Jedi, so she made it easy on him and left. The son was born, and Bo Katan, honoring her love, gave their son a name that would honor Brobi-Wan. She named their son Qui-Gon Kryze (keeping out the Kenobi, so as not to raise suspicion), after Brobi-Wan's former master. After The Emperor was defeated and I was able to begin rebuilding the Jedi Order, I began searching for other force sensitives in the galaxy and I came across Bo Katan's son, who had changed to his rightful name: Qui-Gon Kenobi. I explained who I was, and my connection to his father, and through training was able to help him commune with the spirit of his father. As we set out across the galaxy looking for other force sensitives, we found a woman that Qui-Gon would end up falling in love with and marry. Together, they would have a child. And they named her Rey. Rey Kenobi. The First Order were trying to track your parents down, and they feared that they would be discovered and that you would be killed, so they hid you on Jakku. I later learned that your parents died keeping your location a secret. Now you know who you really are. And why you are so important."

Or she lamented on the fact that this will be her in 50 years if she stays on that planet waitting...maybe?

But on subject of explaining Rey Kenobi....everyone knows who is Obi-Wan, me think..like they know Vader and Luke..it's in the subculture...

    Brobi-Wan
YES! Exactly! That makes perfect sense, and very imaginative, I might add...points up! :)

HAHA, you know I do actually appreciate opposing views because if it wasnt for that, I would have never realised the significance of Rey staring at that old lady..its like the old lady reminds her of someone, like a memory is coming back to her about something, then it gets interrupted. I thought it was weird as hell that she was looking at that lady like that.

If she was left with her grandmother (who is Obi wan's wife), she is recalling her when she looks at that old lady

yeah...I mean, it was never even mentioned if Vader was married to the mother of his children or not...those questions were left for the prequels to answer....so an Obi Wan spin off movie would answer any questions from the ST

This could totally be true and the scene could have a double meaning, but I thought the scene was part of her character building. She sees that old lady as her future self. If she just stays...waiting on Jakku, her whole life could be wasted collecting scrap parts.

I thought about that too (that the scene may be in the future) and I know many people on this thread believe the scene may take place in the future where Kylo saves Rey. The only issues I have with that are: Kylo's light saber (as you mentioned), the fact that I believe the scene was originally supposed to show when Maz stole the light saber from Kylo, (though this may no longer be the case) and Kylo looks skinnier in that scene, like a tall gangly teenage Kylo. It stood out to me because he looks more bulked up in TFA than he does in that scene. I can't wait until the blue ray comes out so I can confirm that observation.

Don't they still have to answer all or almost of those questions no matter who her parents are? If she is Luke's daughter, all but the first questions still need answering. If she is the daughter of someone else, all the questions still need answering. I see your point about how it is difficult to explain her backstory, though. They have made it such a mystery that it will be hard to be satisfied with any explanation. The explanation probably won't be as comprehensive as everyone is wanting, I am afraid.

I've also heard that her looking at the old lady was her reflecting on how she might end up like that lady, spending her entire life on Jakku scavenging.

EDIT lol Klara said this...man this thread has got me all turned around

Also, the great idea for having 2 year gaps in your Star Wars films means that new fans if they are interested will want to fish out all the films. The OT and the PT, even the book, cartoons, whatever else. If a person goes to see the third film in this trilogy and complains about not knowing who is who, then they weren't very dedicated to the film in the first place to be quite honest. I remember someone said to my dad when the PT came out "where is Luke Skywalker"? that just goes to show you have much that guy paid attention. Obviously since he wasn't a devoted fan, he didn't understand the film and in the end it wasn't for him. Some people like the Matrix films, I don't and there are people who don't like Star Wars.

It could be that the explanation is going to be a part of the next movie. If her parents are on the "dark side," or even just a relative, they could be shown tempting Rey back. Remember, Rey's character goal in this movie was set up as family and belonging, not being an epic jedi hero (like Luke's). If her parents end up being dark siders, no telling if she will jump ship to join them or not.

Honestly, is there anyone who doesn't know who Brobi-Wan is?
I wasn't a Star Wars fan and hadn't seen the movies until I was an adult, and I still knew who Luke, Vader, Brobi-Wan, Broda, Han, Chewie, and Leia were.

    Brobi-Wan is in our culture.

I agree that I did see that too, but that face to me looks like she's trying to recall something, she's squinting her eyes.

If they wanted to simplify the whole Kenobi thing, They could cut out his children, show them all massacred or something, she escapes and her grandmother then raises her, she then needs to abandon her "I'll be back sweetheart" (from the book). Thats easily something grandmother would say.

There are five confirmed with names i believe, they are: The Rogue, The Monk, The Heavy, The Sniper and i can't remember the fifth. If you come up with any interesting information please do share so we can work it into the topic, maybe we can talk about something besides Rey Kenobi then [face_laugh]

I know someone mentioned the Spotify playlists earlier but does anyone who put them on there or controls them?

Because I've been looking over the songs in Rey's playlist and as the other person (sorry I can't remember who :oops:sorry) said some of the songs in that playlist are somewhat suggestive. As they said it could be a case of the beat of the song is liked, but some of the lyrics are downright suggestive if you know what I mean ;) Implied sexual attraction to someone and more!!! And just because I'm a Reylo fan doesn't mean I dislike Finn, but as I've stated the Finn/Rey chemistry is far too wholesome for some of the songs on there!! [face_blush]

I recently read a book that my mum had about the mythology and magic of plants or something like that... It said that the honeysuckle is a symbol for devoted love and fidelity. It also said that at some point during the middle ages, it was illegal for honeysuckle to be displayed in the home of a maiden; it was thought that the scent would induce "unholy" dreams that would make them "less pure".
All of this of course means that the song is about her family [face_mischief]

I can't believe that the majority of the GA would not know who Obi-Wan Kenobi is. The prequels weren't that long ago and he is featured in lots of other Star Wars canon. There would be no more explanation needed for Rey Kenobi than there would be for Rey Skywalker, maybe even less as we wouldn't need to get into Luke's off screen love life, Rey's mother, how Luke left her on Jakku/never knew about her etc etc. I'm not totally sold on Rey being a Kenobi but the arguments against it r.e taking up too much time to explain are weak.

The Rey parentage thread has more or less descended into a Rey Skywalker echo chamber... And they accuse Reylo shippers of being blinkered! The last time I looked in on it, some posters seemed to be using George Lucas' treatments for episode 7 and beyond as evidence for Rey Skywalker!!! They must have missed GL's massive tantrum over Disney throwing out his treatments for what he envisaged as a family soap opera with the next generation of Skywalkers (i.e Anakin's grandchildren duking it out) in favour of an epic space opera. GL said his Star Wars was never about the spaceships etc, it was about the family. He said some harsh things about Disney's vision for Star Wars and was critical of The Force Awakens. If it was going to be bad cousin versus good cousin, wouldn't GL have been happy about that, as that's basically what he had planned? However, it is interesting that GL envisaged older Luke Skywalker as being an Obi-Wan Kenobi type figure, passing the mantle over to a new generation of Jedi.

The deleted scenes for The Force Awakens Blu-Ray have been confirmed http://www.gamesradar.com/full-list-of-all-star-wars-the-force-awakens-deleted-scenes/ Nothing new on the Reylo front, I don't think. The snow speeder chase was Rey and Finn against some Snow Troopers, at least that's what I read.

My original Rey Random theory hasn't changed -- the man seen being stabbed by Kylo in the force vision is probably Rey's father (perhaps he was even a former KOR). Since everyone looks dead in that scene, it is likely that other people (from a different clan?) found her and then sold her to Unkar on Jakku. Her mother is possibly dead, but could still be alive but lost Rey in the carnage.

Maybe Kylo simply stole Luke's light saber from the Academy before he left it (way before the Jedi massacre).
