I know a lot of people wanted this scene to be included in The Phantom Menace but I'm glad they decided to keep it out.... At this point in Anakin's story, he is supposed to be pure, innocent, kind, and good-natured..Also- his mother,Shmi, says that Anakin "gives without any thought of reward " and believes her son to be a very kindhearted child. Plus, would Qui-Gon really want to take Anakin back to the Jedi as much as he initially did, if he witnessed Anakin getting into a skirmish and beating another kid up? That would be a big 'red-alert' / signal to me not to try and take him as an apprentice......

I get the scene provides some eerie foreshadowing as to what Anakin is to become in his future, but if this scene were to be canon - it would diminish the tragedy of Anakin's arc (in my opinion).... He's supposed to go from being 100% good to becoming evil and then back to 100% good. If he was beating up Greedo because of accusations that he cheated in the pod-race, that wouldn't convince me that Anakin was EVER 100% good. ( Plus, I feel a touch of sympathy for young Greedo here :( ... Seems like he really got embarrassed ;P )

Thoughts? Do you wish this scene were included in The Phantom Menace or no? Why or Why Not?

The scene wasn't meant to show that he was bad, evil or meant to foreshadow his fall. It was meant to explore his character, to show that he has a temper, as Lucas puts it. Still, it wasn't necessary for the story of the movie, so it was cut.

Interestingly, Greedo's own info section in the updated Character Encyclopaedia says he "attempted to start fights with various people, including Anakin Skywalker, who was then a slave in Mos Espa"

Iron_lord well, we know that Greedo does eventually pay for starting arguments with people, lol

There's two Rodian kids in TPM - one in the main movie, one in that deleted scene.

The kid in the main movie, who is initially skeptical, seen with Anakin's other friends Kitster and Aimee, is called Wald - he's also cheering for Anakin during the race.

I guess that since it's one of those deleted scenes that doesn't contradict what's in the movies (nor does it have an alternate version), they just re-inserted it back into canon.

That's how I think of it, anyway - as a recanonization. Wouldn't be the only one, either. The ANH newcanon novelization uses "Jenny" for example:

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jenny/Legends
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Jenny

though the book scene itself likely has more detail than the original deleted scene did.

I like all the deleted scenes, of course they add certain aspects to the films, but I don't feel like we loose anything too important by deleting them. they are cool and all, but when I'm watching the films I don't miss them. At this point putting them in just adds time to the films, and while that's fun, I don't want to be greedy. :p

Glad I'm not the only one that didn't like this scene. I get why some people feel it should've been included, but it has always felt really cheesy and forced to me. I'm thankful it was left out.

This scene is where I think Lucas wanted his cake and to eat it too. Lucas wanted Anakin to be a angelic young boy who was thoughtful of others, yet he also wanted Anakin to have a predisposition towards aggression. In the end, I don't quite think Lucas knew what precisely he wanted from Anakin in the PT: if he was to be the good man that Obi-Wan fondly looked back on, or if he was the angry young man that Yoda described him as. So, Lucas opted for both.

Wald should have said, "If you ever get into a gunfight, don't shoot first." ;)

I agree with the OP. There's no need to show Anakin's agressivity at this stage (in fact, it goes againts his arc). And the placing of the scene is also problematic: we go from Qui-Gonn telling Obi-Wan that he's going back for Anakin, cut to the fight scene and right after that the tender scene between Anakin and Shmi... Doesn't work for me.

I always thought he was younger than he would be if this scene was canon. Also, he had an interesting backstory in "Tales from Mos Eisley Cantina".

Bultar Swan yeah, it seems like they shoehorned greedo in there.... george lucas really wanted to connect a lot of characters to the prequels that werent needed
