He wrote TFA and directed it so whose sandbox is he playing in??? If you say it's Lucas sandbox, the last time I checked he sold the rights to Disney so its not his sandbox anymore.

Such a bad PR campaign that propelled it to the #1 box office movie of all time domestically! Those stupid hacks at Disney! [face_rofl]

To me, this is a stand alone film. If 8 and 9 can do their own thing, which is kinda hard with the set up at this point, then I can be happy. In all honesty, I'm in love with the idea of the ST but I don't really care about anything past ROTJ or before TPM. The Clone Wars, The Dark Times and the GCW has always been the core of SW to me. I did enjoy the Legacy of the Force books though.

Man, JJ just does not like worldbuilding in any form. He's strongly suggested as much before and with stuff like this, it's even more clear. Little easter eggs like this were what the old Star Wars universe & expanded universe was built around. It's almost like they are trying to make The Force Awakens as uninteresting as possible.

Those two words at the beginning of the title ring a bell?

Disney bought it, they didn't create it. And it wasn't theirs when Lucas was in charge. The six movies are still his works and will always be.

    Non sequitur.

Alrighty, guys, I sense this is a fast track to derailment. Back on topic about the removal of the flag itself, please

Dude do you know what a "hack" is? Because I know you're being super clever and sarcastic but...TFA was almost entirely unoriginal. Hackneyed. Even if you like it, you can probably still see that Disney in fact ARE hacks.

EDIT: My bad just saw what Seagoat said. The point about the flags for me is this: I fully support an artists right to change their work however frequently or infrequently they desire. I don't support creative decisions based on perceived fan reaction, prequel avoidance, or anything else like that.

It really bothers me that there are people working on these films in above-the-line roles that seem ashamed or fearful of half the saga. It's disappointing to me because...I guess I thought artists themselves would put the intellectual effort into looking at what gives the prequels merit. Instead they've written them off based on the loudest fans.

And those fans seem to be allergic to that same intellectual effort.

I don´t give a crap about the flags not being there. Presence of a couple of PT easter eggs wouldn´t make this piece of crap of a movie any better.

so what? this is exactly the point. there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. it's you that puts your own meaning on it. jj says he wants their own stuff and not too many podracer flags. you take that to mean, "take out that pt crap! no pt stuff in my movie i hate the pt!"

"Yea that's pretty gross. I'm a JJ fan despite hating TFA, but stuff like this makes me question all of it. All of this bull**** seems so inauthentic. Stop lying about stuff and just say what you think, the real motives behind stuff.

So sick of all the veils. Money talks, I guess. But to remove FLAGS that are in reference to anything PT is petty and makes the bias pretty transparent. I guess Simon saw the flags and gave JJ a lecture about how art can somehow be empirically bad, and he conceded. Whatever."

all of this is untrue hyperbole.

But they didn't use their own stuff. They used Boba Fett flags. And deliberately removed PT related flags.

Thread needed a bit of cooldown time

As for topic; my take on it - I sort of get the picture that JJ is a bit of an overthinker in some areas. I tend to do so myself all too frequently
Perhaps he had thought it was nice to put some little easter eggs in there, but once the internet actually took notice, something planted in his head like "I didn't want it to be about podracing" like he wanted viewers' minds to be where the movie was it, not here in reality thinking "Ok, time to look for those flags, where are they?"

Of course that isn't how things work at all, given that media seems to have trouble differentiating between "a certain group of vocal bloggers" and "the whole world"

To be honest I think he just didn't want the burden of explaining how it got there. The lightsaber has already made a miracle appearance. Another obscure Skywalker artifact has also somehow made its way there? I think that would suggest something about Maz that JJ knew would be misleading.

But Lucas didnt do it to mock the OT fans. He did it cause his head is so far up his own A**. Also I for one hate a lot of the special edition changes but except that they are dumb and move on. The issue here is that JJ should have learned from Lucas's mistakes. its called compounding the error dude.

The only people who would catch it would be big enough fans to know that she is a thousand years old and collects treasures and things. Also he loves to do that mystery box thing needlessly so why the hell not have a freaking flag be there that MAY be a mystery to some people?

Back to the flag itself I wonder if Ep 8 will have more PT references. Seeing as Rian is okay with the PT I suspect they will be references at least in the background a lot more. Who knows maybe we will get some returning species in the background this time around.

Lucas also tend to overthink things in his movies, except the difference is that he kept doing what he felt was right instead of listening to a bunch of people on the internet who only kept complaining and calling themselves "fans"...

Like if it was the internet who had the power over creativity... How sad to see things turning into the dark side...

Again, I will mention two rules I've learned regarding the internet influencing creativity:

    1) "Don't feed the trolls": you will only give the illusion to some that their ideas was better than yours, as a creator, while it's not true at all.

    2) "Haters always gonna hate": No matter how much you try to please to some people, they will always keep complaining... And that is a general truth when it come to the Star Wars fanbase which has a consuming passion towards the saga, which has pushed Lucas to the wall.

No, big enough fans would see two Skywalker artifacts from completely different parts of the galaxy somehow in the same place and see a connection. This would then cause all sorts of speculation as to Maz's character. It's clear JJ didn't want this line of speculation. He didn't want to intimate a deeper connection than actually exists.

How would people assume its anything other then "over the years she collected stuff including some skywalker things cause they are kinda important to the galaxy" Also so what if its gonna cause some people to over analyze. Either set them straight or let them theorize to their hearts content. People will always see pattern where they are non so why cut an easter egg just cause some people will do the inevitable? Thats like getting rid of all those easter eggs from guardians of the galaxy just cause people might speculate on things that dont amount to anything. So what if some people will possibly read to far into it?

The flag from when Anakin won the Boonta Eve Classic? I think if Maz knew about that event it would suggest she had a much more intimate knowledge of, and involvement in, the Skywalker story than her simply having Luke's lightsaber. All I am saying is that JJ didn't want to make that suggestion to spare us a red herring.
