Finn will lose an arm... he got lucky toying around with a Jedi tool he had no business using, it will backfire on him next time.
How about Luke gets mad at Rey and chops her arm off to prevent her from ehh.. running off with the dark side. Then we have Luke doing something possibly right but also possibly heartless .. depending on your point of view. Plus. Skywalker
Luke should cut Rey's arm off in the very first scene while she is still standing there, awkwardly holding out the lightsaber to him. That would certainly be a shocking payoff to the belabored closing shot of TFA.
Luke: Rey, be careful with it- Rey: MY HAND! MY. HAND!!!!!!! Luke: *run away in another island* Star Wars IX: LUKE HAS VANISHED [again]
The loss of a hand doesn't have to be deeply symbolic or cathartic. I love the idea of Rey or Finn losing an arm as part of a sardonic self-reference to Star Wars history.
If I had to take a guess I'd say Kylo will lose a limb. I don't know...seems fitting. But I'd guess Rey as well, although that almost seems TOO obvious to me...
I hope nobody loses a limb, such that when Rey gets completely destroyed physically by Kylo Renperor at the end of episode 9, it has a far larger impact on the audience as they won't be expecting that level of devastation and beyond anything that happened to Anakin. I'd really kind of like to see a reverse of Episode 6, where instead of the Emperor trying to kill Luke with the Force, Renperor literally pulls the Force right out of her body. But the arm stuff is like any gimmick, if over-used it becomes non-effective. The whole arm getting cut off thing is extremely tired. At this point, they'd be doing it just to do it, and i'd rather have something that is actually story-driven. I think they started to realize this when Plutt's arm getting cut off scene was excised for the fact that nobody cares.
Right, she has to get bested, so when she comes back in ix and kicks ass it will be awesome and meaningful. That left arm very likely coming off. Kylo, was already a punching bag for a lightsaber, that will not happen again. He could possibly die though.
In all likelihood, she'll never leave Ahch-to in Episode 8, and won't meet up again with Ren in the flesh until Episode 9. That's not to say they won't have scenes, but it won't actually be him, but a trial.
I am perfectly fine if nobody gets their arm severed... I am ok with heads being severed since it's only been done with Jango Fett and Dooku
What if Kylo gets really messed up in the final battle in VIII, like Anakin Skywalker messed up, and is presumed dead by everyone, including Leia, but Snoke repairs him and Kylo basically becomes just like his grandfather, Darth Vader 2.0 (designed differently to sell more toys of course) In Episode IX, Rey comes face to face with this new menace and reveals himself to her, totally unexpected and shocked by the revelation. I do think Rey will lose an arm or hand in VIII.
The pay off for all the limb severing came in the moment when Luke defeated Vader, looked at Vader's chopped off mechanical hand then at his own mechanical hand which Vader had caused, and the circle and the metaphor was complete in that moment. The concept was delivered perfectly and really underlined for the audience there. I really don't think we need that motif repeated again. It could be overkill to have Rey lose a limb with the same symbolism. Give us something else! That's why I appreciated Finn getting wounded in the back and in a coma rather than just his hand cut off.
I think Rey going over the cliff is probably an alternative to the hand loss - it's a clear defeat for her, but means she isn't missing a hand for the last part of the film. Maybe she even loses the lightsaber. If anyone is losing a hand I think it's Kylo, but even then I'm dubious.
I think the last fight scene will have Kylo dominating Rey and right before He ends it Luke will save her by chopping off his arm.
Excellent point! And iirc, Luke cut off Vader's head in the cave in TESB when the face became Luke's. I had forgotten that there was a head cutting off motif to the series. That would then tie-in and payoff when Rey loses everything below the neck at the end of 9.
I'll go with the often said theory that Kylo wants a chopped hand. He'll be battling Rey or Luke, and deliberately throwing out an arm, hoping to get it sliced. (I haven't read the Rey v Kylo spoiler). And getting frustrated that they won't oblige him.
