Witness the below.. and realize that it would fit into Star Wars like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Note that the end result would not be gruesome like you're thinking and it would mirror the transformation of Anakin Skywalker in 1-3 to Darth Vader in 4-6, with instead this being a Light Side Warrior.

Okay I'm witnessing but again, why would that ever happen to Rey. Aside from a clumsy parallel what purpose would it serve?

I think it will be Finn who loses an arm... He already suffered massive injury at the end of TFA, due to that slash on his back by Kylo Ren, and as such, the chances of Finn getting his arm severed is high - maybe while defending Rey from yet another Kylo attack?

And her falling over the cliff, most likely into water, only to survive and re-emerge, draws upon a long-standing burial/rebirth/baptism motif. Very religious/mythological.

Think about the social backlash if Rey lost her hand. To lose her hand, she would have to at the expense of Ren.

    Just think about that.

It would be a brave director in this PC world to do something like that.

That made me think of the opening sequence in Skyfall where James is dying/sinking into the ocean and having these trippy visions. If Rian managed to pull off anything close to how visually amazing that was, I'd be super impressed.

    A pre-credits sequence?
Open cold to Rey and Luke fighting the Knights of Ren. Rey is struck and faaaaaaallllllssssss.... into Music and the Crawl. "The Knights of Ren have discovered the whereabouts of Luke...."

    No. They won't do that.

You know...with all their technology, you'd think they could grow a new hand or at least attach one from a donor.

No not precredits. I'm talking about a vision being triggered after Rey falls off the cliff, at whatever point in the movie it happens. The opening crawl stays as is! ;)

The point is that most of the Force ability that Rey derives will shift from her to Ren by the end of episode 9. The light starts out strong, and grows weak... while the dark starts out weak but goes strong. That then flips in 10-12. Its the standard Star Wars pattern. Having her lose almost all of her body would be an explicit physical representation of the light growing weak. Note, this similar pattern exhibited itself in the prequels in that Anakin started out very strong in the force, but had his legs cut off and was badly burned and became Vader, who was a pale comparison into usage of the Force to his younger self. Most of his Force ability went to the Emperor.

Can we add a poll to this thread?

    Pretty please.

Actually I was dissapointed in the lack of dismemberment in TFA. For all the re-hashing and blatant "homaging" of ANH, there were no lost limbs in the movie. And in ANH we got two lost arms.

It is kind of a theme on GFFA about the hero, anti-hero losing limbs.

Luke will likely die but in his own terms. As he's the Obi-wan/Yoda character. I don't think he's lose limbs unless he loses his robotic hand.

Rey is the most likely candidate to lose a limb.

we have two characters - Kylo and Finn - who were scared in TFA by lightsabers.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see anyone lose an arm or leg or anything, but all we get the "different" type of injuries from lightsabers like Kylo and Finn got.

Yes lightsabers now have a damage control button. Hit by a lightsaber, no worries, it was only on setting one.

Absolute unmitigated nonsense. You've seemingly identified the "SJW" types on here. Why don't you tag one in who you think would have a problem, on PC grounds, with Rey being injured by a male antagonist?

Where have I singled out SJW's on this site? I have no interest in doing anything of the sort. Though I'll happily debate them.

I said in my post above indirectly that SJW's can unduly influence the process, thus I would be surprised for Rey to lose her hand to Ren.

Disney certainly won't want their most marketable character in a mire of controversy as I believe would happen. One only has to look at the backlash of Ghostbusters to see the sort of orchestrated SJW campaigns to defend the indefensible.

SJW's defending the indefensible? That's certainly one way of looking at the Ghostbusters nonsense. Quite a revealing one, too.

But there's nothing analogous at all between a controversy about casting and gender of Ghostbusters and the allegation that the female protagonist in Star Wars is essentially invulnerable to injury from a man because social justice. Maybe you can give me an example of an "SJW", here or in the media implying or suggesting that Rey shouldn't be injured because of reasons (I don't even know what reasons you might be referring to. Or what films you've been watching, if you think women can't be injured by men)

Rey can't get beat up as badly as Luke did in ESB because that would be politically incorrect.

Compare the rhyme scene of Luke getting beat up at the bar and Obi saving him to Rey easily turning the tables on the thugs that attack her.

There are things you can do with a male character that you can't do with a female character within the limits of a corporate Hollywood movie scene.

I don't think you know what politically incorrect means. Find me anyone on this forum who doesn't think Rey as a character could be written to be injured seriously due to PC concerns; there's no one that thinks this. It's a straw man.

Or that could be because Rey has had to be self-sufficient and learn to defend herself given her environment, and Luke hasn't. You don't have to see those scenes as gendered, they're just part of each character's backstory.
