It's been years since I've seen it, but...

Achilles talks to his mother, and the film certainly suggests that she is not human.

Achilles flat out says he has seen the Gods.

Achilles defiles the temple of Apollo, and the film flat out says Apollo will have his revenge, and Paris (one can certainly think of him as guided by Apollo, as in the myth) hits Achilles in the heel (his mythological weakness), and this is all clearly made significant.

There are several other references worked in.

Just because Liam Neeson doesn't show up in shining armor, doesn't mean the Gods weren't "in" the film. They weren't quite directly involved as they were in the source material (except when they were), but maybe they thought audiences wouldn't go for that.

The Iliad is pretty long, of course some things are gonna get left out.

    Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)

Saw this on jp's recommendation. Great fun, with a nice little cast headed by Sam Neill and Julian Dennison, and of course great use of beautiful locations in New Zealand. It definitely had that distinct Waititi quirk and charm, and the main characters are very well-portrayed and likable. Neill's great of course, but Dennison steals the show as his "gangsta" foster son. and its a great story too- you never know just where the zaniness will go next.

Kung Fu The Invisible Fist (1972) - While I like some 1970s kung fu bashers (bare handed fighting as opposed to weapons / swordplay), I am glad this will most likely be the last one for awhile. I prefer swords and weapons and flying people in Shaw Brothers and a few Golden Harvest films. Anyway, undercover cop goes to Shanghai to bust a slaver / drug ring but uncovers a Japanese plot to invade China. When his superiors ignore him he takes matters into his own mighty fists. The end fight in this one is a bit ridiculous and long (so...many...stairs....*pant*, *pant*), the close to the fight (a very realistic looking arm break) made me wince. But in truth, it was better to see folks fight in this one than the attempts at drama. I had fun. Though I knew when I started multi-tasking while waiting for the fights this movie wasn't going to satisfy my character/story itch in the slightest.

There are a few things the film had going for it that have made it grow on me over the years. It's probably the most "realistic" Trek in that it clearly strives to blend the weirdness of TOS into a NASA-compatible reality of human space travel, dropping most of the 60's camp in the process.

TOS was born of 50's sci-fi evolving into the Apollo era. TMP was very much the sort of future born of the space shuttle and pre-SW 70's sci-fi (and a healthy dash of 2001). The kind that you felt we could realistically achieve with a couple tech breakthroughs and the kind that would have had its own pavilion at EPCOT Center.

Additionally, once I learned to ignore/skip past the awkward wormhole sequence (a likely remnant of its TV 2-parter origins), part of the (too lengthy) V'Ger approach and the opening Vulcan sequence, it really started to improve my impression of the film. The dropped Klingon finale probably would have helped the film feel more complete as well, but that's another universe now.

Then again, I've only ever watched the tightened-up/upgraded Director's Cut so it's possible the theatrical version is that much more tedious.

I saw the new Ghostbusters film today, and I thought it was okay. Not great, but I did laugh a few times. I don't think it's worth seeing in the cinema though, probably best to wait till it's available on home media if you want to watch it.

Batman vs Superman: Martha Marcy May Marlene

Thousands of people spent almost three years working on this movie. It's budget is bigger than the GDP of several countries.

It has a scene that revolves around a literal jar of piss.

Goodbye Uncle Tom, this exploitation film from the 1970s I've heard about that's a documentary about slave life in the antebellum South, told from the point of view of a couple of time-traveling journalists, and holy crap, is it rather unflinching in its depiction of of what slaves endured. Considering it was made in Haiti during the reign of Papa Doc Duvalier, the filmmakers couldn't have made it any other way.

It's on YouTube, strangely enough, but I warn you, don't watch it unless you can handle it.

    The Shallows.

Best shark film since J2. Decent story and plot. Mostly believable survival situation. Just where did that oil slick come from though? Also that seagull deserves an Academy award, no joke! Go see it!

Dropped Klingon finale? You mean they would have battled some Klingons at the end?

    Step Up Revolution (2012)

A franchise that becomes stupider in every proceeding movie. What I want is a movie where people dance while killing each other.

Yeah, though never filmed, originally the digitized Klingon ship from the opening of the film would have rematerialized alongside the Enterprise at the end and they would have battled to some degree.

A bit of action as a finale would have been welcome in the film but beyond that, I think it would have connected the prelude to the rest of the film in a much stronger way and narratively justified the prelude's presence (given how much time is spent on it despite it being largely redundant since its key moments get replayed later on). Brings things full circle that way.

Yeah, I've always rather enjoyed Troy for what it is. There are so many versions of those stories (and Greek myths in general) that having one be a different take on the material never seemed to bother me.

Although I'm surprised they didn't attempt to franchise that, as they killed characters that they could have used to connect a spin-off to for other myths.

Now easily one of my favorite courtroom dramas, this film really surprised me in some of the things it was going for. The great acting and intelligent writing made the film IMO a classic to be sure.

Thou Shall Not Kill but Once... (1974) Son of a high ranking family becomes a shaolin monk in order to learn kung fu to get revenge for his parents' murder. Turns out this guy eventually walks the walk of the Shaolin Temple where his kindly yet envious mentor falls when tempted by women and riches and all that. Achingly slow in some spots, but I appreciated seeing Chan Wai-Man pulling off a pretty convincing performance so early on. He's the brother superior (not the Abbot) who trips up so badly. Probably not one I'll watch with any frequency, but very interesting in that it largely keeps focused on temple life and the problems that could arise with being a cleric.
