The trailer was cool, but why is the superlaser moving like that? I don't remember that happening in the OT (at least not the 1997 special editions).

It's still being assembled. It was only just finished in A New Hope.

Loved that shot of the dish moving into position.

I hate to be "That Guy" but this is bugging me, we saw the Death Star being constructed in ROTS and it had the superlaser already in place why is it shown being installed in Rogue One? am I missing something?

Yes, you're missing something. In ROTS, you see the round, interior scaffolding of the super-laser (see below), not the exterior disc. The disc we see in the Rogue One trailer sits on top of it/ slots into it. Like a light bulb being inserted into a socket. What we see in ROTS is essentially just the interior skeleton of the Death Star. In Rogue One, we're seeing it nearly fully fleshed out.

I noticed that too. Darn Geonosians fed faulty info to the Imperials about that dish, and the Empire went with a different contractor after that :p

ROTS is not to scale. That or the Star Destroyer they're on is bloody miles back.

I suppose it's bloody miles back. Sidious doesn't want to get too close to some "dirty construction". ;)

Besides, you get a better overview if you're standing way back.

So awesome that these periods of time are going to be covered. Back in the day I just assumed all this stuff - the finishing touches being made on DS1, would just remain in our own imaginations.

If this was asked and answered, please redirect me but why is the Death Star upside down?

It could be one of two reasons (that I can think of):

    1. The Death Star actually has this ability. It flips upside down when it needs to so it could get a better angle while firing its death laser.

    2. It's just some camera trick Edwards and crew came up with to be more stylish. At first, the Death Star is right side up, but then the camera flips upside down because... it'd be cool, I guess.

It's not. The camera is positioned "below" it. Remember, there is no up or down in space.

You're not looking down at it and the planet, you're looking overhead at the planet ;)

And although it looks different I like it as it's nice as usually in films, as Spock would say, the look 'demonstrates two dimensional thinking' ;)

Terrific shot by the way, really beautiful. Death Star's design is so simple yet so brilliant

It's not upside down. It's just underneath the planet.

No, there is no above or below in space, and there is no top or bottom of the planet...So the Death Star is not above, or underneath, the planet. And the planet is not above, or beneath, the Death Star. The Death Star is simply orbiting the planet, and its laser is directed towards it (for the purposes of firing on it, I'm guessing...).

It's strangely haunting to see the Death Star again on film, knowing it's destined to be destroyed. It's like seeing previously unseen footage of the Titanic before it sank.

Wrong, planets have a north and south pole. Therefore, you can determine above and below.

North and south are still arbitrary descriptions, and depend on your point of view. We're just used to seeing the Death Star's superlaser dish oriented towards the top of our screens. There's no reason why it can't point in other directions.
