Did we ever really expect Anakin or Obi-Wan to not get out of a tricky situation?

Rebels seems pretty well balanced to me. Plus it's still way too early for them to start killing off major cast members! If anything they need more light moments to build our connections to these characters so that when it comes to it, a loss of one of them is actually impactful. If any of them disappeared in the next episode I doubt I would feel anything in the slightest. It has to be done right, it has to be a slow burn and I think that is what the LucasFilm crew is doing. Having constant DARKNESS AND DANGER MAIN CHARACTERS GETTING KILLED LEFT AND RIGHT would just end up feeling cheap. Plus we've had Ezra get scarred up fighting the Inquisitor, Kanan lost his damn eyes, and Hera was beat up pretty bad after a failed mission. Ahsoka is . . . well I'm still not sure what happened with all of that but she's gone in some sense of the word.

I don't think that the amount of darkness or violence essentially makes a good or enjoyable show. I think that Rebels' storytelling flaws are deeper than any perceived lightness in tone, or the fact that it's a children's show. Hell, Avatar: The Last Airbender hardly ever killed anybody (even redshirts) and it's still the most complex and mature children's show that I have ever seen. Definitely beats out TCW in overall quality. Rebels still has a way to go.

But I bet that once this season finale rolls around we'll see something impactful and profound happen to the crew of the Ghost. (I for one would be very happy if Maul was offed, but that's just my own personal grudge and frustrations with that character). Thrawn is definitely weaving something together as the season progresses; finding the Rebels' personal and emotional weaknesses so that he can exploit them later, and if they pull it off right I'm hoping there's some tears. Just give it some time.

I'd say they have the right tone for a kids show. But I'd prefer this light-heartedness wasn't at the expense of the Empire. In this way I liked the first season more. Yes the Empire lost a lot but the stakes were smaller. They were causing commotion on some backwater world. They were gnats. Now they are dueling Sith Lords, stealing fighter carriers, blowing up Reclaim Station. When someone gets hurt they are better by next episode (Hera) or the injury ends up meaning nothing (Kanan). When the stakes are this large, you make the Empire look incompetent with so much winning. I don't want the show to be dark, but I'd like it to be a bit more consequential. And for that reason I want them to scale down and focus. More Boston Tea Party than Lexington and Concord.

Yes, I think 'consequential' is the perfect word for what this show needs. And true, the smaller-scale victories seemed more appropriate. But of course then they had to get Darth Vader in there, and that kind of threw the whole balance off.

It's why I'm hoping that our eventual detour to Mandalore adds consequences back into the show. Clone Wars and Rebels have established that Mandalore is a grand stage, but it's also one where the movies never touch on it. There's potential there.

The Empire already looks far more brutal in Rogue One (where the trailer already shows an AT-ST gunning down insurgents and a tank just blowing up a building), so the dissonance there with Rebels will be...a bit amusing, perhaps.

The Empire wouldn't hesitate to kill anyone that gets in their way of their glorious 1,000 year reign. If they could nuke the whole galaxy they would.

I remember hearing that TCW bonus content was going to air on Disney XD in America I think, but it was probably only for a year or so. As far as I know TCW was never on Disney XD in the uk.I agree that the Rebels S2 finale was dark and more TCW worthy in tone, but again, it was only bad guys that kicked the bucket for sure. If Ahsoka was killed it was off screen and she will likely come back as a Force Ghost anyway. When I say redshirts I was referring to standard troops or citizens like we should have seen some Twilek troops with Cham that the Imperials could have killed.

Just because it's called the "dark times" doesn't mean there is death and darkness everywhere. It's mainly he the Empire was oppressive and planets and their denizens were enslaved and forced to conform to the Empire. We've seen that in Rebels, the first episode. They showed Lothal and how the citizens were being treated, being forced from their homes and having their wares stolen for the Empire. Being arrested at the slightest hint of not supporting the Empire. We saw the Wookiees as slaves and being sent to the spice mines of Kessel. We heard Hera say most people sent there don't last long. We've heard Jedi have been sent to Mustafar to die. The Inquisitor even kept Luminara's remains in a casket to attract other Jedi. Pretty dark, IMO. So it really does feel dark and oppressive. Rebels just can't show it to an extreme, but the show HAS mentioned how bad it is for some planets. Just because stormtroopers are not shooting down people and the Ghost crew isn't dying doesn't mean it's not dark. Why do other shows get away with having their protagonist it's survive numerous odds yet Rebels always gets flak that they are never in any danger...? My brother was getting nervous for Ezra and Sabine in the last episode, so I guess to others, including myself, there is a sense of danger.

Hey I know it may seem far-fetched, but do you think there's a chance that we might see Aurra Sing at any point in Rebels? TCW really made her into an interesting character; plus she has a 'history' with Hondo. Not to mention if you wanted to throw Boba into the mix; well you know...

I only bring it up now 'cause I just rewatched the bounty hunter arc involving her, Boba, and eventually Hondo.

Considering this show's track record about movie/TCW characters, I say it's definitively a possibility. Probably not in season 3, though.

I'd be fine with that. At the end of the the Bounty Hunter arc, Aurra Sing seemed to have died when Slave One crashed. But then I remembered in a later episode she reappeared as a would-be assassin to Padme. I checked on Star Wars Wiki and apparently she's supposed to have lived up through the Battle of Yavin.

Rebels really need their own original characters. Ghost crew already meet almost all TCW and OT cast... (Lando,Rex,Gregor,Wolf,Vader,Tarkin,Thrawn,Kalani,Numa,Cham,Hondo,Ahsoka,Leia,Bail,Maul,Wedge,Hobbie...)

If TCW was able to run its course all the way through, then maybe all of those character's fates would've been decided before the Rebels era in SW began. And it's obviously important to include some of the OT characters to establish a connection to the immediate timeline.

Kanan is arguably one of the best characters to come out of the new canon.

I'm warming up to Ezra and Sabine now. I wasn't always so sure of them before, but now I'm on board. But I agree I do like Kanan and Hera.

I agree Kanan I think is the most interesting and complex of the new characters. I'd love to learn more about Hera, I had a quiet hope for a comic miniseries but instead we'll get Maul *sigh*

Kanan is good character and the best on the show, while being great Voice acted by FPJ (though not the best, that belongs to Aphra) and he had great character potential but the show has wasted it all and just turned him into Daredevil instead.
