An awful shame these guys started consuming their own bathwater. Once upon a time they had some actual insights - only on technical plot mechanics, never on subtext or broader strokes of cinematic language, but now it's just a lot "I felt this way, I just did" which doesn't do a lot to distinguish them from the other YouTube film reviewer imbeciles. Film criticism is going (has gone) down the pipes.
Agree completely! What separated the Plinkett TPM review was the genuine insights. I still like a lot of their stuff but this particular review is very cynical. As you say there is a lot of "I felt like this".....
Well they've sorta folded back on themselves - the assertion here being that you've just got to keep making the OT over and over again and that Star Wars is very limited (explains why they liked TFA, a film almost built to address those concerns while forgetting everything else), but the very premise of the Plinkett reviews beyond "It should have been more like the OT" is that the factors that aesthetically differentiate those films, including Jar Jar and the look of the ships and everything was not the problem.
Oh I had to follow up on my overall glowing review. Besides the dialogue for the main stars being a little too quick, how the HELL can Chirrut take down armor-clad stormtroopers with a stick?
I am an OT fan, and nothing pisses me off more than "reviewers" that are still living in 1977 - 1983. Worse than these OT-purist reviewers, are the casuals that just don't get it but feel the need to complain that "Oh, Rogue One has stormtroopers again, boring duhhh, worst movie evah"
If you stand by your statement in BOLD -- I'd have to say this is not the franchise for you... any longer. Stay home, watch the OT, and stay in love with Star Wars. Doesn't seem like you are spending your money wisely ever since, well, 1983. There are now 5 movies you basically do not like and only 3 you do. It sure seems that most disagree with you -- and you have a GF that has never seen a Star Wars movie -- and it seems you must be at least 40... so where has she been all her life? Presuming she is within your age range. NEVER saw any Star Wars movie? Oh well -- certainly entitled to your opinion -- just a suggestion on my part from a concerned fellow JCF poster. [You also use the adjective "Derivative" a bit too much. Perhaps you need to to remember the wise words of Ecclesiastes 1:9 "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."]
The RLM guys are a joke at this point and bathe in their own pretentiousness. Many criticisms about R1 being negative were the exact same reason they praised TFA - yet to drone on about seeing the same things like Stormtroopers, X-Wings & Tie Fighters in a film that is set 10 minutes before ANH is illogical in the extreme. Infact I liked TFA but there was more reason to trash a film 30 years later for unoriginal ideas compared to a direct prequel to ANH when not seeing these things make no sense.
Whenever I read these threads, I'm always reminded how grateful I am that none of us (and some of us in particular) are anywhere near the creative reins for the new films. 9/10 times, it's always someone whose own ideas are appalling launching the most hyperbolic criticism.
Why are people getting stick for not enjoying RO? If everybody agreed all of the time the world would be a very boring place! I didn't enjoy RO, but I'm not hammering those that do.
Nobody is at all, there are 3 youtubers who I regularly watch who didn't like R1 I gave RLM stick for being hypocrites for praising TFA for almost the same reason they didn't like R1
Exactly. Once I was too wondering why people harshly criticize films, but RO did it for me. I guess something hits your nerve and then you strongly dislike it. I wish RO never happened, but it is just another opinion. No need to attack
After Rogue One I'm now much more confident in the future of Star Wars and its leadership under Kathleen Kennedy. I thought Rogue One took enormous risks for a tent-pole franchise, in that it challenged the audience to reevaluate what it means to watch a "Star Wars" movie. The tone, pacing, and characters, primarily in the first 2 acts, were more like those you would find in a drama grounded in reality than a cartoonish sci-fi fantasy. I'm disappointed in seeing professional reviewers complain about elements that, in my opinion, were merely "different" from expectations of what a Star Wars movie should be and not necessarily poor execution.
I'm not criticising anyone for not liking R1. What I'm commenting on is highly vocal, hyperbolic rubbish. I'm sure people happy to dole out strong criticism can handle a little back. BTW - I'm talking more in terms of the quality of counter ideas put forwards - not that people can't hate the movie - if something doesn't work for someone, it doesn't work.
I agree with you, but you must understand that it works both ways. From my point of view some of (shall we say) the over praising of the movie needs to be acknowledged too.
I saw the OT in theaters as a kid. I was the target demographic for the OT. And nothing has me scratching my head more than the OT purist-reviewers.
And that's where I find it hard to connect with you - because while Star Wars is by far my favorite film franchise and has brought me countless joy in entertainment, I still view it as entertainment. I find it hard to even speak about a Star Wars film as "not offending me." I just do - sorry.
I don't object to folks who don't like a particular thing., or a whole movie. Heck, there are lots of particular things and movies I do not like. What gets up my nose are the folks who trash something and either directly say or imply that people who DO like it are fooling themselves, or are obsessed with some childish fetish or longing for nostalgia. Also, the "criticisms of" threads often meander away from specific criticism towards "it sucks" kinda of declaratory statements. That's not a criticism, it's a preference opinion.
Exactly, and then mostly the alternative ideas that would "SO MUCH BETTER" are usually, for want of a better word - pants.
Heh! Yeah. I'm old now and I've been in fandom a LONG time. Oh the horrible fanfic I've seen that people INSIST is better than what was actually done.
Is there somewhere an "anti overpraising" or a "purely negative troll" filter available (as plugin for TFN?)
