ST Episode 8 Title - The Last Jedi

I think we should label this "THEgate." One of the most controversial and divisive issues in SW fandom at the moment.

 

Maybe at the start of the film Luke is the last Jedi. At the end the last Jedi is Rey--or are both Luke and Rey.

 

Rey cannot become a Jedi at the end of TLJ, that would be ridiculous. Only in IX would be the earliest with a lot of training.

 

Just because VIII starts out immediately after VII doesn't mean VIII isn't the second SW film to have a time jump, in which case she may gone from padawan to knight or is close enough to knight so that at the end a dying Luke or a very healthy Luke promotes her.

I predict it ends 12 parsecs after TFA.

That's what I've been suspecting since the title was announced.

But I also have the impression that having done so would be a case of Lucasfilm having telegraphed their pass, at least a little bit.

 

parsec is still a distance. I'm confused....

 

Whatever the title means, or to who or whom it refers, won't be revealed until the third act - perhaps not even until the last few minutes of the movie. That has been the case with all the previous episodes.

 

or it is just no mystery, but keeps people discussing until the movie is out.

 

It could be a big twist and surprise that NOBODY sees coming. What if Snoke was the last Jedi. There's got to be a huge reveal. What if everybody is assuming it's either Luke or Rey, and it's Snoke all this time, or Snoke was actually this person . It's something crazy I bet.

or it could be nothing and Luke IS the last Jedi.

 

That would be a seriously wicked twist.
I find it unlikely myself, but I keep an open mind.

 

It's so easy to troll us Star Wars fans. We scream for months about wanting a title, we get the title and it drives us crazy speculating.

 

Wait for the 1st trailer. We will be like:

Yes pretty much.

I even suspect they might have Luke do a line similar to Yoda's ROTJ line "Rey, after I'm gone, you'll be the last Jedi, you must pass on what you have learned"

As long as I get a montage of Rey training, I can tolerate this.

 

It's a fine title, but a little generic, and I think it doesn't really fit with the titles of the Original Saga films. Instead, it's more like The Force Awakens.

Each of the Original Saga films gave a hint of what's coming and are specific to each film

ROTJ -- We'll have a new Jedi.
TESB -- The Empire will be victorious in some way.
ANH -- After a long period of Imperial rule, there's a hope for the Rebels/Jedi
ROTS -- The Sith get the Jedi good
ATOC -- The Clone Wars that threatens the Republic begins
TPM -- There's something bad out there that the Jedi/Republic don't know about


Now consider TFA -- what does that mean? that title could have been applied to RTOJ (the Force Awakens when Luke becomes a Jedi), TESB (the Force Awakens when Luke begins his training -- "There is a great disturbance in the Force... we have a new enemy... Luke Skywalker), ANH (The Force Awakens when Luke learns of the Force), TPM (the Force Awakens in Anakin who is found to be the Chosen One)

The same thing could be said for The Last Jedi.

That doesn't tell us anything. Jedi is singular or plural, so there could be 1 Jedi, 2, or tons of them. Also, The Last Jedi could apply to other Saga films. Episodes 4, 5, and 6 could've all been named The Last Jedi.

So, my view of The Last Jedi as a title: meh.

 

Yeah. When we're looking back on this in a few years, no one will care what we thought the title meant... we really only use them as identifiers.

Tangentially related, I find it interesting that so many assume the movie picks up right where VII left off..just because we know they filmed in on Ahch-to (God bless you). After all, flashbacks and visions have be some canon and typical. The movie could start years after TFA, and flashback to Ahch-to (God bless you).

 

It's not just an assumption. Rian Johnson, the director of the movie, said that it starts right where TFA left off.
