Man. "rehashing" and "filler" have become words absolutely devoid of meaning on these boards. That scene was one of the most striking and unique visuals in the trailer.

I thought that trailer was badass, and didn't give me any 'fears' about the movie. (On a note, though, Loved that it had a fun parallel to the TFA teaser, beginning with a hold on an establishing shot, followed by a swift jolt entrance of a character heavily breathing.)

Seems like Luke finally got the message that, "When gone am I, Last of the Jedi will you be" wasn't as much a prediction or statement of fact from Yoda, it was a word of advice.

That did look suspiciously like his skin texture for a second there.

    No.

Because Snoke explicitly said in TFA "If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise." If anything, Luke just means that the old traditions of the Jedi must end, and that they must become something new.

I imagine this is where the movie starts, but not where it ends.

I hope Luke is not taking a page from the Bendu. The Bendu's full of it. There's no such thing as true neutrality--or if there is, it's called apathy. And as we know...

It's what I've been saying for years, and we've been discussing it on these boards for years... the Jedi should be reformed. The role of the Jedi needs to be rethought.

Luke is just saying that they need a new name and identity along with the reforms... that they must be so different they should no longer even use the same name... hence "the Jedi must end," "The Last Jedi", etc.

Yet some people are still in denial, thinking Luke's sentence is cut-off, or that Rey will bring him new hope for the Jedi. The title of the film is The Last Jedi. :p

I'm hoping this too. I picture it like Yoda's reluctance in training Luke and Anakin, except he's not talking about how Rey's "To old" or something. He's just lost all hope, and ideally she will inspire him to regain confidence in the Jedi way.

Don't think he's going Bendu. I tend to wonder, perhaps, if he's widened his perspective, and seen the limited use and nature of the Jedi Order. That it was just one of many possible Force philosophies, and it had fatal limiting flaws that, alone, didn't actually contribute to solving the pressing needs of the Galaxy.

The Bendu is all, "Nothing matters, let me sleep." Whereas perhaps Luke is, "Something matters, but it's not THIS WAY."

One of the most interesting things to me in the trailer aside from Luke's quote was the shot of Kylo. It seems deliberate that the shot of him has his lightsaber obscuring his face. He's going to look even more like Vader with the scars that must be on his face from his fight with Rey. There is a scar above his eye that makes him look similar to Anakin in ROTS but surely that lightsaber blow he was hit with would of dealt him more damage than that.

Thought the trailer was pretty great. Lot of great visuals, scenes of Rey training, x-wings and a-wings, some new ships. Lots of mysterious ideas surrounding Luke and the Jedi, not exactly sure what to make of that yet. It's going to be a long wait till December.

Just like "Avatar The Last Airbender" meant there were never any airbenders ever again, right? ;)

I'm all in favor of the Jedi doing some reforms, learning from the mistakes the Prequel Jedi made, but making a whole new order? Not only are Jedi such an iconic part of Star Wars, unless there was some major philosophy change I feel like it would just be the same old Jedi, but with a new coat of paint and the serial numbers filed off. Just like "The Galactic Alliance" was supposed to be a fresh, new and improved version of The New Republic but in actuality barely changed a bit.

Now if Luke started a "Grey Jedi Order" or "Bendu Order" as some have suggested, that would be a major philosophy change, but not one I would like. With all those times Yoda warned Luke about the Dark Side, that it would "forever dominate your destiny", the epiphany Luke had when he cut off Vader's hand and saw it was very much like his own, saying "JK its ok to be a LITTTLE evil" kind of undercuts the message.

Anyways, what did people not like about the Prequel Jedi? All the shady and questionable things like taking children from their planets, approving the use of clone soldiers little more than slaves, and getting involved in a war where the "right" side was corrupt and the "bad" side had some legitimate greivances. So how is MORE moral ambiguity, MORE greyness, the answer?

If only there was some kind of cataclysmic devastation of the Jedi that would allow a new leader with markedly different views than the Old Guard to rebuild the Order from the ground up. It would be even better if this new guy had at least a decade of relative peace to rebuild.

That's not how I take to mean.

The Jedi's interpretation of the light was very strict, barring emotional attachment. If you're looking at the Jedi as the embodiment of the light and the Sith as the embodiment of the dark side, the middle ground can still veer to "good" but with the allowance of emotional attachment. Luke did away with that rule in the EU too.

Yep, pretty much figured some sort of teaser had dropped since the boards were down earlier.

My take on the whole Luke thing? Not taking it quite at face value. Teasers are meant to, well tease after all.

I wonder as well. Luke must be sick and tired of history repeating itself, as well as his family tearing the galaxy apart. Since he's training Rey to be a warrior, I get the feeling he's not exactly teaching her the exact same things Yoda taught him. After all, he always disagreed with Yoda and Obi Wan on how to handle Vader. Definitely sounds like he's widening his perspective, perhaps enough that he wouldn't consider himself a jedi anymore.

Their definition of attachment clearly means something very specific, though, as we see the Jedi form friendships and feel sadness and act in ways that are motivated by concern for others many times both in the films and in other canon materials. They mean attachment in the way it's meant by many real world religious: the preoccupation with the material world at the expense of one's duties and spiritual wellbeing. Anakin proves them right.

Everyone's dissecting Luke's "The Jedi need to end" line from a philosophical standpoint, as if he's saying there's something wrong with the Jedi way of thinking, hence leading to all the "Grey Jedi" or "Bendu order" theories.

I have a feeling it's something much more simple. Something along the lines of "If the Jedi had never recruited my father, he would have stayed a poor slave on a back water planet instead of murdering countless people. And if I never trained Ben, he wouldn't have murdered countless people either. I'm not going to train you only for you or one of your students to start the whole thing over again."

You know, I really love the TLJ poster, but I think it would've been even cooler if Kylo's face had been blue-lighted: a reverse of the sides the character's faces are on. Luke's in red (representing the dark, even though Luke is light), and Kylo's in blue (representing the light, even though Kylo is dark). But I can't complain, this thing still looks really, really cool.

Anyone thinking the "jedi" after episode 9 will have the pos NJO philosofy? All that talk about balance, light and dark...Mortis talk is really being punched in our brains after the Disney takeover.
