The Kylo Ren shot also reminds me of some of the weirder angles Jackson would use in the LotR movies. I thin the connection I'm making the most is that with LotR, Jackson brought all his personal small-budget, weird, non-mainstream, indie stylistic sensibilities to a big budget production, and it looks like Johnson has done the same here. It feels personal, which is a fun word to use with a film that's being released by a huge corporation alongside billions of dollars worth of products.

Yeah, good call on the Kylo Ren shot! And I agree. It feels very rewarding to see a more intimately scaled director like Peter Jackson and now Rian Johnson tackle a more grand-scale, big budget production. The Last Jedi just feels so visually 'quirky' compared to the other SW films and I love it for that.

LOTR is music to my ears and Jackson indeed had some pretty nifty shots.

I'm honestly thinking this will be my favorite looking movie of the Saga if the quality of the teaser is anything to go by

This is the shot that sold me. It doesn't take a genius to make western Ireland look good. It does take some skill for me to love the look of someone running through a set.

But all of the shots with more dramatic lighting are gorgeous too. It may just be the newness of it all but I'm in love with the look of this film.

it's going to be a beautiful film i love it when main stream movies take more artistic shots and I think this is going to be one of them!!!!

I love this thread! More great shots:

I just love the dash of red in salt colors:

This shot needs more love. It's pure hard sci fi in otherwise high fantasy and war-minded teaser. It's something out of Space Odyssey 2001 or Alien:

Ooh, that's a good call there on the last shot. Definitely reminiscent of Ridley Scott's Alien!

Absolutely. Best shot in the trailer, IMO.

I love this trailer so much. And agreed on the underrated Finn shot! Love the sharp, clean, pure sci-fi look juxtaposed against the fantasy elements of Rey's story. I imagine Rey's and Finn's paths will starkly contrast both narratively and visually.

My only quibble is tiny (a personal one) against birds-eye view shots. The overhead shot of Skellig, because of that angle, diminishes the scale of the mountain significantly. Edwards avoided that camera placement except for once (During one of the "Rebel ships take down the AT-ACT" scene), and those shots stuck out like a sore thumb.

But apart from that, wow. The greens, grays, blues, and then the red against white. A bleeding landscape!? Brilliant.

We're in for a treat. Johnson knows what he's doing, and he's a bold artist who understands that cinema is primarily visual. I need to see more! Now.

Gigoran Monk I think that overhead shot of the island will really pop on IMAX and other big screen, but especially on IMAX, but loses effect on a YT size one. It's one of those grand scale shots that must be seen on the grand scale screen.

A lot of the "cinematography" discussion here is more to do with the locales and sets and blocking, but one big change I'm seeing compared to The Force Awakens is that The Last Jedi is shot with wider lenses.

    A few examples:

JJ tends to like a lot of movement along the z-plane, so that's not surprising. Wide angle shots tend to feel more cinematic. Also, it could just be that they haven't been fully color-graded yet, but TLJ seems to have a slightly warmer look. And given that this is act II now, I'd expect the weather and time of day to get more dramatic than the mostly day/night shots in TFA. Can't wait to see what Dubrovnik looks like. Especially the yacht they were shooting on.

The space battle shots are a bit meh after seeing so much of that type of action in ROTS and R1. Hopefully Rian's got some new ideas for shooting them that we haven't seen yet. I liked the shot of the Falcon in atmosphere. Very graceful camera movement there.

That overhead shot of Ahch To would be much more impressive if it didn't look so much like some of the Apple TV drone-shot screensavers. Rian kinda got beat to the punch there.

That was my first thought when I saw that opening close perspective shot of Rey in the trailer. The type of shots Jackson did with Gollum.

Oh man, the Island in TLJ just looks much more real than in TFA. Something about that TFA shot is off-putting to me, maybe it's the shaky cam

Wow, there are loads of beautifully-shot scenes in just this teaser alone... With some of my favorites being these lovely screencaps!

The trailer, with the two salt flat shots in particular, actually made me want to buy the Blu-ray of a film I last saw about nine years ago..... Tarsem Singh's The Fall.
As a matter of fact, one of the many international locations in the film is the Bolivian salt flats.... Inkawasi Island in Salar de Uyuni.
It was the red dust plumes that really reminded me of The Fall, as red is utilized really well in that film.

The trailer for The Fall might reveal a bit too much, if you haven't seen the film and want to be surprised.

Slo-Motion shots aside, the one with Luke in the cave feels "almost" raw. Slightly poetic if I may add and a clear reference to the Searchers.

Visuals might not be that amazing but it is to my knowledge that Rain-Man knows how to use shot composition and very interesting imagery.

So far, I think everything looks great. The lighting, framing, coloring, all great. Moodier, and more foreboding. And, I love the homages.

Steve Yedlin is doing the cinematography and based on the footage we have, he seems to be trying to emulate Peter Suschitzky's work on Empire to a certain degree. The lighting and color schemes are very similar.
