I was just thinking. I think lightsabers by the time of The Force Awakens were considered archaic and novelties. The Jedi have been gone for decades, and the First Order stormtroopers and Prateorian Guard have weapons that can withstand lightsaber strikes no problem. Laser axes also. Finn is just a normal guy and yet he uses Luke Skywalker's old lightsaber and is encouraged to do so. Snoke doesn't have a lightsaber as far as we can tell, and Kylo's is just a half-assed history project harkening back to the very old Jedi. By 34 ABY, lightsabers are like swords are today in the 2017 world; where we use guns only.
I think they've always been that though. I mean, Lightsabers have never been a widely used thing. The only people to use lightsabers have been Jedi, or people who the weapon itself. We don't know if Snoke has a lightsaber; he's more of a mystic like Palpatine anyways. I'm not sure where your info about Kylo's saber is from. As for the FO Riot Troops and Praetorian Guards, they're not Jedi or Sith. They don't use the force.
You missed the point of what I was trying to say. In 22 BBY, lightsabers were used by Jedi and well known and nothing (save electrostaffs) could block them. The First Order has all these toys that are analogous to lightsabers. Only Jedi used these weapons and yet Finn picks it up and starts using it even though he knows he isn't a Jedi. Palpatine did have a lightsaber and used it when needed. Snoke clearly did not feel the need to carry one. Kylo's cross-guard design is an ancient one seen from the Scourge of Malachor (check Wookieepedia). He made such a half-assed weapon; its almost like Snoke really didn't require him to construct one as part of his training; he just did it for ceremonial purposes like swords are done with today. Heck, even Luke didn't use a saber anymore
I think the FO has a lot of lightsaber resistant weaponry because they were very concerned with Luke Skywalker specifically ruining their whole enterprise. Separatist personnel who were more likely to have to fight Jedi carried lightsaber resistant weaponry.
He didn't half ass his saber because he did make a jedi saber as Ben Solo. The darkened hilt and crossguards were a later modification after his turn to evil, especially because crossguards were necessary to keep using a cracked crystal (happened via bleeding). While he messed up the bleeding thing, it still shows his genius with using crossguards. Instead of needing to go on a quest to find a non-broken kyber crystal to bleed, he made do with his original now damaged crystal.
Yes. Luke' s tiny, reclusive order of Jedi who lived in wooden huts built lightsabers. I'm sure their might be a tribe of humans on some island on Earth who use bladed weapons in equivalent.
Ben Solo was Lukes special student and the most powerful of them. For all we know he is the one who had the most training. Maybe spent time away from academy grounds to find the materials to build his first (and so far only lightsaber). I strongly suspect the other students never reached the stage of building a lightsaber. After all, the Knights of Ren are Lukes former students, and they are stuck wielding blasters/regular melee weapons. If they had sabers before their fall, you would think they would be using them.
I mean, the Jedi have already passed into myth by that point. It makes sense their weapons would as well.
Lightsabers are still superior to the First order weapons. Far better when it comes to deflecting blaster bolts and cutting through things.
It would be nice if some of the Knights of Ren (if they appear) will have lightsabers in IX. And I hope the lightsaber fights choreography will get better. I get that they are trying to emulate the OT lightsaber fights, but those were limited by lack of technology.
I think it's best if the Knights of Ren maintain not using lightsabers. It has them stand out compared to other darkside groups when only 1 member uses a saber. We have our share of groups of men with red blades for other eras.
Absolutely this. And that also points out the difference between Finn using one and Vader using one. It was a little higher than Snoke's back burner.
Some of the First Order's energy/electro based weapons(and armor as well) are in response to deal with possible Lightsaber wielding warriors as were weapons used by the Separatists during the Clone Wars and later the Empire. The lightsaber weapons can only be made by Jedi or those trained like the Jedi such as Sith Lords. These two orders in particular are apparently always in a state of near extinction . The Sith under Sidious either stores and locks away lightsabers or destroys them or both. So they are prized possessions and weapons only used by the Jedi or the Sith or some splinter group from either one or both. Treasure hunters or grave robbers could always unearth lightsabers as well. But with lightsabers you have to be trained to use it or atleast be a skilled martial artist to some extent even if you're not a conventional Force sensitive. Melee weapons are still very much used in the modern era of the Star Wars saga. Ranged weapons like blasters are just more "modern" like say guns are today. Just because Jedi or Sith use lightsabers as their weapon of choice, they all appear to be just as good with blasters and starfighters ect.
I think it's a 2nd amendment issue. Lightsaber control would go a long way to stopping the devastation of a GFFA
As others have said, they always were an archaic antique novelty to regular people. It's just that in the hands of a highly trained individual, they can be dangerous, and in the hands of a highly trained Force user, they become kriffin' dangerous, because a Force user can overcome the limitation of the weapon in both offensive and defensive measures. I mean, we see the First Order seems to have doubled down on melee weapons capable of fending off lightsaber strikes, especially in their bodyguards, and even down to regualr troopers with riot batons. And some of these weapons have some seemingly inherent advantages over lightsabers; we know from Rebels that lightsaber blades aren't lighter in the hands of the wielder, and the staffs, spears, and whips of the Praetorians have more surface area that someone can use for maneuvers and leverage. But It doesn't matter; a Force User simply maneuvers their blade to the most opportune area for each strike and block, almost as though they can see the future... Which, in a practical sense, they can.
I LIKE THIS! The crossguards being later modifications explain why there's that janky wire hanging out external to the hilt.
