I would agree with you, director and writer are very different....that's a huge issue....what's even murkier to me is this, I thought I saw Kasdan helped on this script and he helped on TESB right? so what happened with that since this was no TESB?

I dont understand why all these questions, which obviously will be answered at one point or another, cant be answered in the flood of comic, book, tv series, movies that is to come. Im happy to wait for those answers. I dont see why its important these movies answer these questions right now.
Who is Boba Fett, why didnt they tell me more....yeah i been through this conversation back in the 80's.

I sound like a broken record but bulk of the complaints here will be addressed at some point or another. Other stories will explain those motivations years later, other stories will explain how people got to be a certain way. Until one is old and has experienced life, few will understand the needing to know and knowing that the big picture is more important than a snap judgement of a brief moment in that history or whatever is going on in that specific moment. As far as im concerned if i had ALL of the information regarding bens growing up, who the other players in the temple were, how snoke came about to be I think there would be less tension/mystery in these new films. But because you see them this way you want to know more, thus backstorys are made...its always been this way...i dont understand why anyone thinks it should be any different now.

Its no different than saying (back during OT days) why does Darth Vader hate people, or why is the Empire so mean..no one was really asking that. Sometimes life just is.

the simple answer is bc no one wants/has time to invest in ALL this stuff you just mentioned, the movies are really supposed to stand alone from all the other stuff (books,tv,comics, etc) and so people are fearful that we're 2 movies in and 1 to go, what if they don't answer the questions...I mean TLJ totally took questions from TFA and the answer was there is no answer (AS lightsaber, Rey's lineage, Snoke, etc)

As of now, we have legit reasons to think we’ll never know more about some issues. We might. We might not. How Maz got the saber, how the map to Luke was found, who and what was Snoke, how did Snoke get into Ben Solo’s head, and Rey’s origins all could never be mentioned again. This is a whole new ballgame from what we are used to.

I'll go one step further with this... I kind of don't WANT to read the upcoming Luke Skywalker novel because I'm so disgusted with how he was handled in this film. Even if the novel has answers I might have found satisfactory (which I seriously doubt).

And @Grilled Hutt , to your post I can say this... this stretching things out into comic books, games, toys, etc., is a lot worse than it used to be 40 years ago. Give Disney half a chance, they'll water it down so much just to stretch the money made we will hardly recognize it as Star Wars anymore.

    Oh, wait...

I was open to a non-EU Luke, certainly, maybe even a Luke that was completely jaded, grumpy and old...maybe even rogue - remember that theory that surfaced about 3 months out that Luke was actually the bad guy? Just not a Luke that was written by someone seemingly out to prove how many fan expectations could be shot down in one film (note I said expectations...not theories).

There WERE a few things I liked, but the two sticking points for me are always going to be Luke's very randomly inserted departure and Rey's lack of any real hero's journey struggles and training (coupled with the 'Broom' boy at the end).

given that the pilots were all on this side during the mutiny, at that point no one was worrying about restructuring in the middle of an escape.

There is a difference between wanting to know the back story of a supporting character, and wanting to understand the primary antagonist, with whom we're clearly supposed to wonder what the hell is going on.

And, like others have already said: its not unreasonable to want the movies to stand on their own. If its not in the movie, they don't get credit. With a series of movies intended as a trilogy, there's a little bit of leeway the audience is inherently going to give. But fundamental components of characterization for the primary antagonist should be provided within the trilogy, and in a reasonable time. If we come to understand Kylo Ren's motivation in Act 3 of Episode 9, how the hell is that going to work?

If he was written as a purely evil character, like the Emperor, then we don't need to delve into him to get it; he wanted power at some point in the past, he took over the Republic, and now he wants to hold onto that power. Thats something that just is. But Kylo is written as conflicted (except when he's written as the most evil person ever), so we're being jerked around here. There is not just is for Kylo, because of how he's been written.

And if we're going to have to read a separate novel or comic book to 'get' Kylo Ren, nope. Just nope. The supporting material is supposed to expand upon the movies, not make up for their failings.

The fact that Luke tosses his and his father’s lightsaber over his shoulder like socks but tries to give emotional relevance to Han’s dice is all the proof you need to know that Rian Johnson had literally no idea what he was doing when directing this film

A big part of my reason is that, since Kylo is effectively a villainous protagonist for this trilogy, as compared to an antagonist like Vader in the OT, he needs to be fleshed out and explored, either in his past or in his future, as @Tycalibur has said. A protagonist generally needs to be either dynamic or have depth to them. An issue with this film for both Rey and Kylo Ren is that they're both still largely static in this film, and while Rey has her pursuit of her family made into a flaw that at least digs a little bit into her psyche and the importance she's placed on it, giving her at least a bit of depth even if I think they shortchanged her in other areas, Kylo is by and large still the exact same depth as he was in TFA; in comparison to our other protagonists both in this film and the precious film, he's the most flat and static. We know the least about his actual motivations, and beyond his inner turmoil (which Adam Driver does rock at portraying), his personality and wants and desires aren't really spelled out beyond the basic "bad guy who wants to take over."

The film *does* give us a tantalizing tale form Kylo's history with the story of Luke in the hut, but Kylo's aggression and apparently burgeoning malevolence is still a complete mystery, even though those elements are apparently the catalyst for the ignition of Luke's lightsaber and thus Kylo's rebellion. And since the film tells us that afterwards, Kylo immediately recruits and corrupts other students to join him in slaughtering their classmates and joining the fascist First Order... Well, it kind of clashes with the "just a scared boy" description Luke gives. In some ways, Rey benefits from having a mysterious and unclear past; we know that she came from dirt poor anonymity, but that means her altruistic nature and struggle with that anonymity give her a clear motivation and identity. Kylo, thanks to our knowledge of who his parents are and what kind of people they and his uncle are, just begs the question; how in the kriff did did the son of Space!Churchill and Space!Audie Murphy end up idolizing and cosplaying Space!Hitler, even after being tutored by Space!Roosevelt?*

Like, if they'd explained what types of hooks Snoke had in a young Kylo, and exploited them for character growth, that could have really worked. Like, imagine if Rey discovered that Snoke had been casting Force illusions of Darth Vader in Ben Solo's mind, or otherwise gaslighting him. And then Rey forces Kylo to learn that truth. Now, Kylo's core identity is threatened; he's based himself off his misconception of his grandfather, and is nothing more than a tool for Snoke...almost like a reverse of Luke from ESB and ROTJ when he realizes that Ben and Yoda deceived him about his idealized father. Now, Rey, and the audience, have a reason to see Kylo's turmoil kicked up a notch and maybe conceive of a fed up Kylo truly turning on Snoke... And then when he doesn't, it's less "stubborn spoiled child of privilege gone Neo-Nazi for no reason and sticking with it" and maybe more "Macbeth after he realizes he's been played by the witches, but is loathe to part from his power and face the consequences for his actions."

*For the purpose of this comparison, consider this "Roosevelt" to be some unholy combination of both Teddy and Franklin.

Not just any dice...force astral projection dice, buster. Force astral projection dice that stick around after Luke dies but then disappear at the opportune moment to make Kylo Ren madder (LOL I, Luke, trolled you again hahaha!). Everyone involved in the writing and approving this stuff...something must have been in the water.

Yes, exactly. Kylo isn't built up in TFA to be the main villain of the trilogy. He's defeated in the first movie, with the hint that his master is now going to be getting involved. Not only does Snoke barely leave his chair, but he doesn't train Ben the way he said he would at the end of TFA. All of this falls only on Rian, not TFA. (And also, are we forgetting Kasdan co-wrote TFA? It wasn't just JJ.)

Yeah, feels to me like a film directed by someone who'd never seen a Star Wars film before being told that ESB is the fan fav. So he watched one while playing a game on his phone at the same time and called a day on research.

JJ and Gareth took a humble approach when writing/directing. Trying to fit into the lore and traditions of SW. Rian seemingly more ego-driven, hey look at me.

LOL no absolutely not. Here and there, yes, but it's active enough to miss things that are said.

I've participated in some of it so I'm not without critique, but imo Last Jedi holds more star wars than TFA.

This I really thought would, SHOULD be on top of their bucket list to explain in 8. Instead... RJ: "No, flashy Force-remote-controlled lightsaber through the gut. Dead. So don't worry about him anymore."

Another complaint I have was that the film wasn't atmospheric enough. I still think rogue one is still the disney SW film with the most atmosphere. In fact, it easily out shines the PT in that regard as well. So many scenes has my eyes wandering around eating up the environment and feel of the world. Nothing in TLJ had that affect on me.

    I disagree.

The bond between Lucas and Williams is missed in all the Disney efforts.

Don't give JJ ideas...it's another excuse to destroy yet one more thing from the OT era.

"But the Falcon blew up heroically saving the--" NO. :p

I wasn't talking about music. I was talking about the feeling of the visuals and how it immerses you in the world. I can't put my finger on what causes it, but I think it has a lot to do with the lighting style.

too bad rogue one didnt include character development or characters with any emotions at all it was like everybody was just reading q card and I loved Forest Whitaker poor atempt at pretending to be Darth Vader. I know some Say the Last Jedi feels like fanfiction but that's how I felt watching Rogue one. It was like a kid just playing with action figures was no real steaks involved. I didnt care about the characters when we were introduced to them and after two hours I didn't care that they died either. but I do agree the visual effects were awesome and it looked like a Star Wars movie
