Good point about child Rey’s attire. I thought she looked like a refugee by the way she was dressed so it makes sense she was very poor. And her clothes do look like desert/warm weather attire.

 

Yes, I remember posting these tweets in ya olde Parentage thread to support a Rey Random option and being told how much Pablo et al, were liars, deceptive, etc.

It’s almost like y’all are saying fans deserve to be treated with contempt if they don’t read/treat as gospel Pablo Hidalgo’s twitter account. By “almost,” I mean “definitely.”

 

It's almost as if you're putting words in @Satipo & I's mouths... and by almost I mean definitely.

 

I didn’t refer to you two specifically. I was vaguely referring to the previous conversation I was having with @CEB about animosity toward fans which I read these posts as piling onto because they’re right after.

In all of the tweets you put up, PH is being a sarcastic condescending... something about SW fans that help pay his paycheck for speculating in a way he considers stupid. None of these tweets are in response to a so-called “entitled” fan being specifically rude. The only person being rude in them is the LF employee.

 

I seems like it's some of the hardcore fans that felt Rey's parents being important was set up in TFA whilst casual fans didn't seem to see any discrepancies.

False. My entire family of casual fans believed Rey was related after TFA. Those that saw TLJ think Kylo was lying. I assume they would be among the “Rey Birthers” that are made fun of by LF employees and hardcore fans on the interwebs.

 

Or he just doesn't put as much importance in the issue as the hardcore fans do... but irregardless I've saw & have seen plenty of 'fans' being nasty & rude to him, especially when his answer went against their 'headcanons'.

 

Were they disappointed by or intrigued by the idea of Rey coming from no one special? There are two kinds of ways to view unmet expectations: as a disappointment or as a surprise. I think it's largely hardcore fans that experience the former.

 

I consider you a hardcore fan. I consider myself a hardcore fan. I consider everyone I know in normal offline world a casual fan. The way you summarize hardcore fans vs. casual fans has no substantive relevance to me.

They didn’t buy it. They didn’t think it was the story. We debated in the car ride because I believe she’s Random and they just didn’t see it as making sense. They were neither disappointed nor surprised. They simply think Kylo is a manipulative liar.

My brother is a casual fan and he thought she was related. I think the difference is the level of involvement in the theories and being flexible instead of sticking to just one.



Pablo strikes me as no nonsense. But he often comes up as rude. It's a knee-jerk reaction of his. Like when someone tweeted him to link of an article about the concerns toward Trevorrow and sexism. He was dismissive toward the fandom. Then he had to apologize more than once because he didn't bother looking up what it was about. His immediate reaction is mocking.

No, I was saying that people can’t complain too much if they slagged Pablo off for months as a lying deceiver, when people pointed out - often - that he and the film and JJ’s commentary may have been playing fairly. None of this was unforeseeable. Rey Related was always possible. And thinking it would happen or wanting it to happen was always fine. The snark is not aimed by Pablo or anyone here at that kind of level.

 

I don't know the details, but people do tend to be rude when they initially respond to what appears to them to be rudeness. Eye for an eye sort of thing. So don't forget to rule out that possibility. Doesn't make it right, but it can easily be a tendency even amongst normally polite people.

 

You said that he doesn’t put as much importance on the issue as hardcore fans. Lots of casual fans put importance on the issue. This isn’t an issue that divides hardcore and casual fans. It divides fans generally, I suppose, in that there are lots of opinions across the board.

PH places enough importance on the issue to single out and make fun of certain fans for how they speculate, so it matters to him in some way.

 

Pablo is polite when people are polite to him.

 

And impolite when fans tweet him to make fun of other fans not tweeting him... about those fans not tweeting him.

 

It's important to realize that while Rey's parents themselves are unimportant, the fact that they're unimportant is, itself, incredibly important to Rey. It's the latter, and not the former, that was set up by TFA.

 

It’s mild snark - which gets thrown around every which way. Nothing serious. I think he has high patience levels.

You know you don’t have to follow him, right? If he makes your experience of the series you clearly love a little bit less fun by his rudeness to those polite adults just politely demanding clarity about plotlines they don’t want to wait for, and ignoring anything he says that they don’t like, then just unfollow, hey presto! Both you and Pablo have a bit less annoyance
