Yeah I have to admit that even though I'd love a ReySky reveal I do worry about it falling flat. I can easily see them very easily fumbling the reveal. That said I'm not thrilled about Rey being a random so even if they fumble a ReySky reveal it'll be a wash for me.

Personally, I think she’ll return to Achoo, and Luke’s FG will appear there. He’ll come back :)

I believe the reveal will be the key to resolving the past. Including Kylo.

One thing I hate is Flip Flopping"yes GL did with Vader" but for them to now say that Rey is a Skywalker is lazy writing and poor story-boarding skills.Do it or don't but don't change your mind because you think the last guy messed up.

    To Mods
this is not an attack on anyone.

I think if this ‘ deep respect” had been more clearly shown in the film, I would find this easier to accept. I just don’t know why the filmmakers couldn’t at least have had Luke train Rey, even if reluctantly? Instead of just teaching her a couple of lessons about why the Jedi needed to end, why couldn’t he have actually TRAINED her? He still could have refused to go with her. With what we were given in the film, rey never learned anything from Luke about being a Jedi. Instead, she got her skills and knowledge through Kylo.

I think that this was bad for rey’s arc and bad for Luke’s. Rey didn’t need to work or struggle to earn becoming a Jedi, and Luke leaves no Jedi legacy at all because he never successfully trained anyone. Luke and Rey parted on adversarial terms. I just don’t see enough of a connection there for her to take on Luke’s surname. That just looks like a convoluted way to keep the iconic name alive, in a way that really isn’t meaningful to rey or to Luke.

Sadly, I really don’t think that Luke is going to be in the next film at all, let alone in a way that would improve the relationship between Rey and Luke. I think if Luke shows up at all, it will be at the end of the film in a cameo. If they really wanted to establish a great relationship between Luke and Rey, than that either should have happened on Ahch-to in TLJ, or Luke shouldn’t have been killed off so it could have occurred in episode ix.

I know right? Seems like if LFL was hardcore committed to Rey Random right from the beginning and they didn't want any ambiguity about whether she was biologically related to Luke or not they would've simply cast a non-white actor for the role who could not pass for being mixed race.

By casting Daisy LFL at the very least wanted the audience to speculate that Rey might be related to Luke even if she's not.

Rey’s parentage is now and will continue to be what it was from the beginning.

    ETA:

    @The Regular Mustache

Wouldn’t that...kinda undermine any point of Rey Random...?

Sorry you lost me. Would what undermine Rey Random? Purposely casting somebody that would invite speculation about her being related to the Skywalker/Solos? If so then yes I would think so.

If that's the case then why not make Rey Luke's daughter from the get go?

I find it amusing that even in the early TESB negative reviews, they mentioned one positive factor that crucial for its eventual vindication:

Luke Skywalker being the only character that is recognizable and relatable. As he should because he's the main protagonist and the series' success depends on Luke's handling as a character. Other factors like Han and Leia change as society changes. One moment, they are seen as sappy romance. Next moment is the greatest romance since Gone With The Wind. And then, when the #MeToo moment happens, it gets criticized for Han being too aggressive and being romanticized for it. But Luke's journey is something that should be timeless. And that's where Star Wars is at its best. Being timeless.

Rey, on the other hand, seems to have gotten worse in TLJ rather than remaining the same or improving as a character. As she is "the main character," my enjoyment of ST depends on whether or not I am invested in that character. Because TLJ refuses to give any meaningful conflict in Rey's journey (they are token trivial matters that are flatter than Nute Gurnay's tax excuses). As such, ST suffers instead of improving. My opinion on TFA has actually gotten worse instead of being better thanks to the film ironically using an ESB cliffhanger, leaving its fate at the mercy of TLJ's reception (and IX's reception).

As for Rey Skywalker, the damage has already been done. Rey suffers from two fronts: Lucasfilm trying so hard to subvert and sell a message (Anyone can be a Jedi via being born randomly for it) and Rey not having a compelling story to begin with.

The first factor makes it impossible for Lucasfilm to simply backtrack and then say "JK, Rey is really a Skywalker." I will still be angry because that means that Lucasfilm is not even committed to an idea, which makes the whole TLJ's risk taking to be pointless and really bad in hindsight. And fans of Rey Random would be furious because they thought Lucasfilm was on their side and not doubt feel betrayed.

The second factor is for people who simply don't care about her parentage and just wants her to stand on her own. If she doesn't stand without the crutch of the mystery box parents, then they would simply not care about her anyways regardless of what her true origins are.

One reason might be to continue the Skywalker lineage in spirit without dated references to bloodlines. Another might be to pay homage to Lucas himself, who adopted children

If only Luke Skywalker actually had that kind of adopted father relationship with Rey. That to me was even worse than Rey not being a blood Skywalker.

Deliberately casting a girl who looks more like Mark than his own daughter, giving her Luke’s story beats, she acts like a Skywalker (or, at least, reminiscent of Luke), etc.

The point of Rey Random is to have a totally different sort of protagonist. But considering what we’ve seen so far? Obviously not the case. (And ofc if one wants to go the romance angle, you don’t cast a girl who looks just like the guy’s forbearers...)

Seems like the clearest way to do that would've been to tell us straight up that Luke had an actual adopted daughter. Why bother with a metaphor for adoption? Just cut to the chase and tell a story about how Luke had an adopted daughter that went missing or was presumed dead.

After TLJ, there is no character-based reason for Rey to choose to take Luke’s name. It would be purely meta in purpose to keep the name alive. For Rey, it defines her by a stranger she didn’t even like and who she sold out to the enemy. What happened to Rey not needing to be defined by others?

If people want Rey to choose a name from a surrogate parent, there’s actually time for her to bond with Leia in a real way off screen. Let her be Rey Organa based on a relationship that is actually built and that is actually personally meaningful to Rey.

Yes. It isn’t even blood, really - it’s about family relationships. Like Leia being an Organa.

I don’t really see why you’re putting in a requirement for it to be clear? I’d rather it be resonant than simply set out from the start, if it happened.

OK, except, they wanted to tell a different story. No one has to like it but that's where we're at.

I don't think of it as a requirement. I just think that if you want to pay homage to Lucas's adopted kids you make one of the characters in the ST adopted.

You’re getting way off my flight of fancy, which was just that that was something I think could work dramatically (and it could). You are free to have your own idea that you think would be better, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with the idea that I’ve had; and since as of now my idea is the only way that adoption could come into it, there’s not really much point to a “if I did adoption I would have done it like this”

I think it's the same thing that happened about Rey/Jyn. Internet was debating that Rey was Jyn's daughter because:

    -Daisy and Felicity look alike
-Rey and Jyn has similar scenes
-Rey and Jyn being separated from their family when they were very young
-Jyn's mother knowing about the Force
-Even Jyn's mom look like Rey

Oh I'm not saying your idea is inherently wrong. We just have difference of opinion. No biggie.

For what it's worth at this point I do think there's more of a chance that Rey Random will chose Skywalker as a last name than there is that she'll be revealed to be an actual Skywalker. Hope I'm wrong though!

Completely different story. Rey was cast in a trilogy Luke was already confirmed to be part of. Rogue One was a stand-alone and no one’s appearance needed to be taken into account.

Rey doesn’t just look like Natalie and Mark because she’s a brown-eyed brunette. And those convinced Rey isn’t a Skywalker have noted the strong physical resemblance between Rey and Padme. (Except that the possible reasons I’ve seen them suggest...yikes...) They tend to miss the resemblence to ANH Luke, but they wouldn’t have much interest in such comps anyway, I would imagine.

    Essentially...it’s not an accident.
