ST Allegiant General Pryde/Richard E. Grant in Episode IX

Yeah, it's unlikely he is playing Thrawn, but nothing is confirmed or refuted until we see his character on screen.

 

I think it's unlikely that any actor that is asked "Are you X" will confirm anything so as long as we do not see a blue guy in the trailer (without a white smurf hat) I dare to say that he will not be Thrawn.

 

He's Grand Moff Hissa. We can never escape the legacy that is The Glove of Darth Vader.

 

He could have only answered: "Sorry, I'm not allowed to say anything about my role". No need to lie.

 

Seems like there are a number of options but Thrawn isn't one of them. Maybe he's the FO general that kills Leia? That would probably cause the room to go upside down. Maybe he kills Kylo Ren? Maybe he kills Hux? Maybe he kills Poe, Finn, or Rose? Maybe he kills Maz? What I'm saying here is that he might kill somebody.

 

Luke comes back to life saying "hey guys i'm back" then pow and REG kills Luke!!!

 

Maybe he's a "Thrawn type" but not him. Maybe Grant is a peculiar former Imperial Admiral who aligns with either the FO or the Resistance in 9.

Such an old guard Imperial character could provide interesting dialog in which some subtle backstory and world-building of how the FO arose to power could be slipped into 9.

The Resistance has Lando (and crew?) come in as old guard reinforcements, and the FO gets Grant's old Imperial...balance.

Also causes trouble for Hux, especially if he's aligning himself with the FO only to betray them later. Maybe Kylo respects Grant more than Hux because he knew the Emperor and met his grandfather etc.

 

This was my sticking point too and one of the two reasons that still causes doubt in my mind.

The other one was mentioned by @A Chorus of Disapproval and the exact reason he mentioned about Grant going into a room and everything turned upside down when he was told he was playing Thrawn - because I too doubt that he has a vast knowledge of Star Wars characters outside the highly known ones. If that was Grant's actual reaction during this casting session (or whatever it was), then the character he is playing has got to be well known character like Kenobi. Some sort of "general secondary" character would not produce a response from him like the one rumoured. It has to be well known character.

I guess I made the comments because of physical similarities between Thrawn and Grant and because of that Production Weekly tweet - in addition to all of this "Unknown Regions" (or close too) stuff of recent. Some aspects of the overall story appear to be heading in that direction and surely Thrawn would almost have to be front and center for characters used in stories there.

But as you and Chorus mentioned, there seems to be two very big hurdles in the way of my thoughts.

 

Could he be playing a slightly older Han?

 

Grant is 15 years younger than Harrison.

 

Well actually I was thinking of Alden.

 

So 61 year old Grant playing a slightly older than 25 year old Han but still younger than 35 year old Han? This makes perfect sense!

So you want someone to portray Han somewhere around 15 years before TFA and Harrison Ford isn't interested, what else do you do?

 

Rumor has it Richard E. Grant is possibly or possibly not portraying the character Thrawn.

 

Well that couldn't be anymore clearer.

 

IX is set 50 years after TLJ and Grant is playing Broom Boi. The Millenium Falcon has been chased by the FO for 50 years, cause that's how much fuel they had. Rey did not go to Ahch-To for Luke, she went for fuel. That green milk? One sip can power a ship for 2 months. She stocked up on bottles, then left.

What if he's shaved bald, made up with the scars and make up, and he portrays an unmasked Vader in a series of dreams or visions that Kylo has? Perhaps Kylo and Vader have an extended conversation in Kylo's head.
