There appears to be metal scaffolding all around the spire. Was it under restoration? I wonder if it's somehow related.
Yeah - both CNN and BBC have mentioned tha construction work but so far no one has tied that to the fire.
According to Swedish media, French police have said they suspect the restoration might be the cause of the fire.
BBC haven't said that yet but it wouldn't surprise me. All you need is some machinery like a heater left on and that could do it.
Reports are saying the fire has collapsed into the main part of the cathedral. If that's true all that woodwork will be gone.
I don't know. For example the Twin Towers were very ugly, even as a kid I felt that. Yet I still miss them in a way. And they were boxy corporate buildings that were less than 30 years old. A beautiful church almost a millennium old with such historical and architectural significance? I don't think it's silly at all to have some level of attachment or feel sad over its loss.
Right. I mean I was really pissed when ISIS destroyed all those Assyrian temples and such. I think pointless destruction of heritage is always sad.
Twin Towers were a symbol of NYC, just as Notre Dame is a symbol of Paris. It makes the destruction more painful than if it were just an anonymous building. I just hope Notre Dame's cause was accidental and not deliberate otherwise there might be problems in the city.
I think he's probably on the Paris side of the river, not on the island itself. That was being evacuated earlier - just the firefighters should be left.
Helicopters are not being used because it will cause more damage and could make the structure even more unstable -edit- The interior has been gutted.
This opinion is a bit difficult for me to understand. Wouldn't you be sad if the Metropolitan got burnt? Or the Statue of Liberty.
I completely understand tom and Watto's points of view. Personally, I have a lot of great memories of visiting the cathedral with my parents, a former girlfriend, my wife, and my kids. Not all at the same time. I don't think I would have wanted to visit Notre Dame with my wife and former girlfriend and have to explain that to my parents and children. Also I feel sorry for the people of France and Paris. Even the most crass reading of Notre Dame is that it generates millions of Euros a year in tourist money for the city and the people who live in it.
For my part, I completely understand the appeal of historical monuments. I was delighted to bike along the Amsterdam canals today, a Unesco cultural heritage site. I had lunch with a historian in a historic building, at the spot the first ships to the Americas sailed from. I said to him, "With the sea rising, there's a possibility this will all have disappeared in 100 years." He said, "Yes, and we must have peace with that." Et voilĂ .
Wise words, Mr. Watto. Nothing lasts forever. Within 7 million years Donald Trump's face will have completely eroded from Mount Rushmore.
