Bingo!!! Yup, he gave them a few minutes, which they don't really use as they stand around for a bit watching Luke getting blasted by the walkers. If he'd just been there in person the sacrifice would've been a whole lot more poignant and truly mirroring his mentor, Obi-Wan's own death. But then that wouldn't play as well with the resurrection that could make that scene plausible in context of character. May be Yoda told him if he died like that he could be resurrected?

Makes you wonder how much Jedi training Leia actually had, her reaction falls exactly in what Yoda preaches..."mourn not, miss not, feel happy for those that have become one with the Force". Which leads into another massive cr*p on Lucas' ST road map of not having Leia becoming a Jedi Master even if she doesn't fully practice it.

    Just seen mod warning, apologies.

I'm curious about the long term views of Luke's actions on Crait. Let's say that they spread and they became Legendary at that moment in time. But didn't Rey in the same movie "kill" Snoke according to Kylo and might as well have for Resistance propaganda.

then in IX, Rey will defeat Kylo and the FO and cement her legacy and it will be her Legend that spreads as the new Jedi who took down evil. In retrospect Luke's actions are ones that seem to likely fade once you advance in years and his actions become a long memory. Could have been different had he died in the final battle instead of a battle which was set 1-2 years prior to IX.

Anyone remember Yoda as a weird but kinda cool mentor (before the PT came out)? Then portrayed as a powerfully influential and, in the end, defeated figure in the PT (from which he never left Dagobah until he died)?

I think Luke understood Yoda's/the Jedi's fall-from-grace, and the need for humility - including Yoda's decision to not get involved and stay on Dagobah - through his "vanity" references in TLJ. I think he really understood the value of having "faith in your friends" (and, as an aside, not just your family).

The ST is these new friends picking up his and the OT heroes' mantle and after ROS we will see Luke as the culmination and furthering of Yoda's teaching. His appearance at the end of TLJ was his realisation that he still had a major part to play in passing on and permitting the new heroes to become just that. (His comebacks to Kylo were also quite like Yoda's to the Emperor in ROTS). For ROS, he doesn't need much screentime to remind us or reinforce this but I reckon it'll be pretty good quality screentime when he does.

Maybe, MSW thinks perhaps not. And a force ghost can do quite a bit after watching Yoda... Anyways, it will be interesting to see if they can bring it home for all of you who are not happy with Luke. I hope in some way they pull it off for you.[/QUOTE]

If Luke has a good scene in TROS, I'll probably watch that.

At this time the legacy that Luke will leave for the post ST era is that of a failure, he was protected for the first 19 years of his life, his father was the one that actually ended the Sith (temporally it seems), his role to resurrect the Jedi Order ended in failure and ultimately he only managed to train Rey to lift rocks.

So what does Abrams and Terrio do? Surely they're creative enough to right the wrongs, I'm certain Abrams view of Luke differed significantly from what ended up in TLJ, if MSW rumours are correct Abrams and Terrio will put it right by resurrecting Luke. So do they go the whole hog and give people an end that will be true to the beginning in 1977, will Luke fight side by side with Rey, will Luke be part of the ultimate victory?

Let's be real and plain about the title of IX for a second.

    The Rise of Skywalker.

Sure there are and can be multiple meanings in that title, but for all intents and purposes most viewers of the ST consider Luke to be "Skywalker" at this point and not anyone else.

This title promises us that Luke Skywalker will rise in some form or fashion. That could be:

    1. Physical resurrection for Luke
    2. Strength, power, aid from Luke from the spiritual realm
    3. Influence on a group or movement who take up the name Skywalker in honor of Luke

Those are the three main options (or a combination of the 3) unless JJ is getting really weird and left-field with the title, which would be new for SW, which always has had very straightforward titles in term of meaning, even if they are double-meanings, they are easy to grasp even before the film is released.

Abrams so wanted to do something with Luke that even though he said he came back for “who is Luke Skywalker?” he pushed Luke to the last minute of TFA. Honestly, if you are expecting creative out of Abrams, or them to magically fix it all, you may want to dial back your expectations.

This is the only hope for Luke redeeming himself in my eyes (so he can redeem himself by building a new new Jedi Order with Rey off screen post-IX) but I do not in anyway believe this happening. It seems TPTB have been clear that Luke is dead and staying that way. I expect a couple of scene cameo and that is it.

Luke coming back from the dead and fighting seems like retconning and to please the dissatisfied. It's retconning because TLJ Luke had no interest in any of it. Why would dying change that view.

Who would he fight? Kylo seems to be Rey's battle and resurrected Palps is likely Kylo+Rey. Unless for some reason resurrected Palps needs all Skywalkers to permanently destroy him. Maybe Luke and Anakin are the ones who destroy him when it comes to Netherworld shenanigans.

who knows maybe IX involves Rey and Kylo venturing into the Netherworld and in that case Luke wouldn't be resurrected.

For me that sounds like the fact that "The Skywalker" Kylo now has unlimited
power and rises to be the biggest evil in the galaxy since ... ever.

He will be so bad that even Palps comes back to help the galaxy to kill him.

Jokes aside - I think "The Rise of Skywalker" is meant in a negative way

I don't expect anything, TFA became The Search for Skywalker, that became the whole macguffin for the whole movie but was destroyed whith what happened next. So what does Abrams do, does he continue with the mess or at least try to clean it up and put the pieces back together? May be that was why he talked with Lucas, Abrams films like Super 8, Star Trek and Star Trek Into the Darkness don't back up any hope he'll get it right, but the alternative is to right TROS before it's even released.

MSW are saying Luke will be resurrected, many people believe that to be true, are they lying?

Will IX feel like an alternate VII, as if the ST just started later in the timeline after Han an Luke had died?

Like. The story post-ROTJ could have just picked up many years later with Luke a Force Ghost, his one remaining student helping Leia and the Rebels, and Leia and Han's son turned to darkness and running an order inspired by Vader and the Empire...

On its most basic level, "rise" is the very opposite of "fall". For that reason alone, I can't imagine such a title having a negative connotation in Star Wars.

How many times did JJ say Cumberbatch wasn’t Khan?

I have no opinion on whether Luke is resurrected or not. I just hope that it’s not Pet Semetary - “sometimes, dead is better.”

Correct, only something like Rise of the Dark Side or The Rise of Ren could be seen as negative.

Skywalker is good, therefore Rise in this case is a positive thing and a hopeful title.

Skywalker could also represent the light side within Kylo Ren. Therefore The Rise of Skywalker is hinting at the victory of light over darkness inside Kylo, therefore a redemption for the character.

Wonder if The Rise of the Light (a rewording of Snoke's dialog in TLJ "darkness rises and light to meet it") was an initial working title or possible title, and then JJ or Terrio came up with the idea of using Skywalker instead of Light for increased interest, intrigue and branding...

I would not accuse anybody of outright lying but I suspect if there’s any truth to this it’s more that Luke does something as a Force Ghost that is being misinterpreted as resurrection. I will not believe Luke has been resurrected until a person I trust sees IX and tells me that is what happens. All my faith and hope in having the ST go even remotely the way I want is long gone.

Abrams has been given the best excuse from Johnson's own writing...

Lost Ben Solo you did, lose Rey we must not!

So if Rey is put in some sort of danger, something she can't get out of alone and Kylo/Ben isn't there or hasn't turned yet, is Luke going to stand idly by repeating earlier mistakes? To do nothing would just be completing his failure, putting the last nail in the coffin of the legacy of Luke Skywalker, probably dividing the fandom forever....and unleashing another backlash that could hurt future projects such The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series.

The Netherworld, where Palpatine is, one thing is certain...Palpatine is far more dangerous than Snoke. It took both Rey and Kylo to kill Snoke, may be it would take Rey, Kylo and Luke to defeat Palpatine. And why would Luke fight now? This time he has no other choice, if he doesn't it would mean certain death for Rey, Kylo and the Resistance...may be the whole galaxy as we know it.

Yes, I don’t expect Luke to be resurrected or to have much of a role in episode ix. He is dead. If they wanted him to do something important, he would still be alive. Plus, there are too many other characters that need to be given the important, heroic roles, because, as everyone says, this ISN’T Luke’s trilogy, ( which is why he shouldn’t have been given that huge negative arc in TLJ). Finn, Poe, and especially Rey, need to be front and center in the major action, and their characters need to be more fleshed out, and rey’s background needs to be filled in more fully.

Then we know that leia plays a major part. We are hearing that Han may appear to apparently try to reach his wayward son. Lando has a role to play, as does rose and the other new female character.

Where would there be much of a role for Luke, let alone one that could redeem him in the eyes of those of us who feel that he has been brought so low and died a total failure? Plus, there’s the fact that Mark Hamill didn’t seem to be present for very long during the filming of episode ix, which means he likely has just a couple of cameos. So, for those who are expecting to see Luke improved by his presence in episode ix, I would suggest a lowering of expectations, because I really don’t see JJ abrams giving Luke much of a role in his new film. If he didn’t know what to do with Luke in TFA, I highly doubt that he has a grand plan for him in ix. As far as the OT characters are concerned, Leia, and especially, Han, seem far more important to him than Luke.

I really think that the film’s title is mainly a hook to try to get those of us who have not enjoyed the ST so far into the theaters. I think it just is going to be the new name for the Jedi, and frankly, I would hate it if they did that. Do they think that after destroying the skywalker family that we will be happy with the “cookie” of having the Jedi named after them? Frankly, it would just make me MORE annoyed! The Jedi should remain the JEDI.

Second Coming and Armageddon and all that.

I don’t see the use of Luke in TFA as in any way a predictor of his use in RoS. One is the beginning of the story, the other is the end of the story.

Also, importance of a character is not necessarily tied to screen time.

Yes, they talked about it in a couple of Patreon commentaries. It's filled with speculation and they aren't certain so definitely not solid. But at least a possibility currently until further clarification.

Maybe the hooded figure Rey and Kylo fight is Luke. And it's Luke's Force Ghost training them for the final battle.

Luke's arc is one of the strongest in the ST. Luke's arc is how he was going to be either way in both Lucas and JJ's scripts with a few changes. Luke's more like Yoda then Obi wan in the ST, he's like how Yoda was during his years in exile before the OT trilogy. I think Luke's will have few scenes like Kenobi in both ESB and ROTJ. I like that Luke will be trying to challange Kylo and his dark urges with the light, of visions of his father and maybe other things. Maybe we see Anakin join Luke.

Luke aint coming back. They pretty much confirm it in the voiceover in the trailer as well - "its your fight now". Luke shouldnt have died to begin with and he could still help Rey and the Resistence in something of a grander scale, while still leaving all the heavy lifting to Rey - still saying its her fight/her trial now.

Luke will be a FG and my guess is he will offer some convulted revelation to Rey to help her on her quest for whatever. I havent liked ST Luke anyways, so I'd rather not have another serving of this character. Let Luke rest in peace - he can visit many Toche stations without further burden.
