Imagineer says Galaxy's Edge originally was going to be 1 or 2 KNOWN Star Wars planets but Iger changed his mind. 40.00 minute mark of podcast.

I can't help but feel that might have been a mistake. I'd be there soon if there were exact replicas of places on Tatooine we've seen. As it stands, I have no burning desire to see Batuu.

Same mindset here - no doubt it is amazing to actually pilot the Millennium Falcon for real but too bad she’s the only big attraction in an otherwise unfamiliar planet called Batuu... As such, give me the Hunk of Junk in her Legoland miniature form instead, since the ship is in a familiar setting comprising of the Prequels and Originals! =D= :falcon:

It's been discussed to death on this forum and elsewhere in the fan community and in news articles from a variety of outlets. I'm not about to take the time to link everything for you when you can do some searching yourself. No offense but I don't have the time or inclination.

I feel like this is a big mistake. When they made Harry Potter world, they didn't invent a new location. They built the locations that fans had read in books/seen in the movies and have always wished were real. Imagine if Harry Potter world was some newly invented - just for the park - wizard school no one ever heard of. Imagine if the entire thing was set in NY, in the Fantastic Beast series. Would fans be lining up dying to see it? Would fans be moaning about missing out on seeing Hogwarts finally after years and years of dreaming about it. I'd be there in a heartbeat if it meant the chance to finally set foot on Tatooine, or the Death Star, of Dagobah, or Naboo.

    This.

And at least there is a relationship with the Fantastic Beasts series - even if its not a strong one. Batuu might as well be somewhere over the rainbow. A new magic school you never heard of is exactly the right example.

I've taken the family to Universal Studios a couple of times since they opened Harry Potter land and the entire family loves it because you are right in the places you've read and saw on screen, with its own unique story lines (it doesn't just copy from the books/movies).

I've been in the cockpit of the Falcon on one of its tours and love the idea of seeing the entire Millennium Falcon. Creating a lightsaber may be cool. But besides that - nothing of what they've debuted at GE resonates with the Star Wars fan in me.

Tatooine should have been the location, with the bar being Mos Eisley, and them also creating Jabba's Palace (with another Hutt in control if they wanted). Do that and it would have been a gold mine. Having any of the ST hit Tatooine would have been all that was needed to have the storyline still focused on the new characters they wanted.

And listening to the podcast - seems like Iger also fell for the banana in the tailpipe and fell in love with TLJ based on the daily reports.

Damn. Jabba's palace/sail barge could have been an amazing theme restaurant.

Could have added a pod racing ride for kids...

The way Disney has handled Star Wars has been full of hubris and its backfired.

I agree that it would have been a better choice to go with film locations. But at the same time I appreciate the approach that they did decide to take, making part of an in-universe day. Maybe they should have gone with a middle ground of having it be an in-universe day at Mos Eisley.

That is why I feel that Legodid the right thing with focusing on the Prequels and Originals for their centerpiece Star Wars Miniland in Legoland... This resonates well with the majority of SW fans and is what draws people to check the place out, whenever at their numerous theme parks all over the world... =D=

Same goes for The Void with their famous Star Wars VR experience (there’s one in Malaysia now, at Resorts World Genting - where the Disney-Fox theme park is at) - they went for a storyline based on the Empire and set on Mustafar, stuff that most of us are familiar with... ^:)^

So while I feel that Galaxy’s Edge is indeed impressive (the Millennium Falcon has been my loyal Hot Wheels model since 2015 and it will be interesting to fly her big sibling - for real), I agree with @2Cleva that the setting should be Tatooine, the place where Star Wars started back in 1977...

Eh, I rather like here they went with it. Tatooine makes for a nice film setting, but to basically take what's currently there, paint everything even more beige and rip out any trace of greenery sounds like a good way to make a dull and scorching theme park environment. I think Galaxy's Edge has some theming issues, still a bit overly beige as it is, a lack of kinetic energy, spaces for actors that aren't being utilized, and could do a better job on the soundtrack front, but none of that is really solved by making it Tatooine. I can see the appeal in having a location like that, that people are familiar with, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a little more popular as a result, but for my money, Tatooine would be a step in the wrong direction.

I get what you're saying, but the difference with Star Wars is that it's an expansive universe that isn't focused on one or two locations.

Unless that Batuu planet (which sounds like the Malay word for “stone”, by the way) eventually makes its way into some Star Wars series or even one of the new trilogy movies... Which I think will happen, otherwise this place will be in a neither-here-nor-there situation... [face_laugh]

I know that Batuu debuted in the new Thrawn books and, if Disney is smart, they will make a series or movie of that series or at least a spin-off from the story line. The new Thrawn books are my favorite part of the new Disney canon.

I must admit that Galaxy's Edge looked very nice. The detailed art is very spot on. But . . . I had assumed that Disney's "Star Wars Land" would be a combination of the three trilogies - like Fantasyland is a combination of many animated Disney films. And what happened to Finn, Poe Dameron and Rose Tico? Why aren't there any cast members portraying them? Instead, they have Rey, Chewbacca, occasionally Kylo Ren and some stormtroopers. That's it?

Apparently, the budget got slashed on the performer's front, which is why all the costumed characters are ones who previously existed in the parks and already had costumes made, with the exception of Vi Moradi, whose stunt show also seems to have not appeared again since the press previews. Though Finn and Poe will at least be found in Rise of the Resistance.
