ST What do you think of the titles for the sequel trilogy movies?

I like the titles, but I am not really fond of them all starting with “The”.

 

I think The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi are fine titles and to me served their purpose for each movie. The Rise of Skywalker really stands out to me. It rolls off the proverbial tongue when I say it in my head and it evokes a sense of wonder behind the meaning.

 

Love The Last Jedi as a title - despite not liking the film itself.

The Force Awakens is alright as a title.

Rise of Skywalker - eh, sounds odd now, but the jury is still out.

 

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I wanted a Lucas' style of the titles for these movies.

The first movie should've described a person like TPM and ANH did. The Force would be better for the last movie - Sith, Jedi, Force.

TLJ describes a person, the thing Ep 7 should've done. The word Jedi was used two movies before so not even The Last prefix saves it. Also, second movie titles describe an event. That's broken here.

TROS, third movie that begins with the. It describes an event - that should've been Ep 8.

The titles here are bad - for the saga movies. The titles as themselves are not bad.

 

The Force Awakens is a good title and it actually fits the movie, in my opinion.
The Last Jedi was a pretty good title, despite me not liking the movie.
The Rise of Skywalker sounds promising, as long as it lives up to what it seems to be implying..that that the Skywalkers, in fact, rise and actually play an intricate part of the movie.
Hopefully, the filmmakers aren't just blowing smoke to try to get fans to see it.

That’s not perfectionism. That’s just taking arbitrary and unintentional patterns and assigning a deliberate order to them.

 

I love "TFA" as a title.
I find TLJ very confusing, considering the ambiguity on whether it refers to a single Jedi or several of them, together with the fact that what we see in the movie doesn't really seem to be in line with the title. Luke says himself "I will not be the last Jedi". #subversion I guess, but it didn't work out for me.
For TRS I need to see the movie first. I'm excited for the movie but I'm not very excited for the title.

By the way, did you know that in Italy ESB was called "L'impero colpisce ancora", which actually means "The empire hits again" ? In Italy very often they change the title and other stuff and do a mess.

 

To be that was the best translation they could come up with. "Strike back" means "rivalersi, reagire" in Italian, and "L'impero reagisce" would have been plain stupid. "La rivalsa dell'impero" would have been a cool title, but then again that would have been different from the original. I wish people realized that you can't always translate things literally because they may not sound good in a language as they do in other ones. "Home Alone", for instance, sounds great in English, but had they translated literally ("A casa da solo") it would have sounded like a horror movie. I'm so glad they went with "Mom, I lost my flight". Bond movie titles also got some great translations, LTK and DAD Italian titles were much better than the original titles (LTK doesn't make sense as a title since Bond's licence is revoked, the Italian title is much more fitting). The fact that the Italian titles are often messy is just a stupid misconception and most of the times only low budget movies get bad translations.

Now, back on topic.
I'm not too fond of the sequel titles, honestly.
TFA: It is actually a pretty good title, but it has no meaningful connection to the plot (Force did not go asleep, as other users already pointed out), it was just a meta way to say that Star Wars was back. Lame.
TLJ: I wouldn't mind this one that much if it weren't for the fact that we had already had Jedi in a title and it was only two movies ago (chronologically speaking), meaning that if you put your Blu Ray in episode order they're very close to each other.
TROS: This one is very generic and pure fan service. I can't judge how it connects to the plot and I'll do it after (if) I'll have watched the movie, but the title itself is very uninmpressive to me. Veeeeery generic.

I would have been just fine with L'impero contrattacca. After all I think that the French did just that.
It is not a stupid misconception. Take that movie with Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. They made it sound like a comedy while it is rather dramatic.

 

I think The Force Awakens is the best title of the saga. The Force never went to sleep, but it was asleep in Rey.

I would have preferred The Last Jedi to be the title of IX but as it is, I like the title, especially since it refers to both Luke and Rey.

I’m just getting used to The Rise of Skywalker title. I think it’ll make more sense once we see the movie.

 

I'm not saying it never happens, but I'm sick of people mentioning that only example and using it as proof of Italians only doing bad jobs. Yeah, okay, they make a few mistakes, Eternal Sunshine being the worst one, but they also make a lot of good things.

Let me give you a friendly advise: don't take it personally, since I'm not offended, but generally when you discuss with someone in this forum, it might be a good idea to avoid formulas like "stupid misconception" and "I'm sick of people..." and other similar expressions. I'm sure it was not your intention, but it is really perceived as very aggressive.

TFA: I think that's a cool title. If only it had been given more context in the movie. Why was the Force asleep etc

TLJ: Nah... I don't think the Jedi should end, so unless that was supposed to make us be afraid about the future of the Jedi, only to give us a plot twist, which it didn't, then I think it's a terrible title.

TROS: I don't Iike the use of a surname in a movie title. This is no exception.

Eh, I don't like any of 'em...but I'd say The Last Jedi is the least bad.

 

Love and hate are pretty strong here. I don't really want to vote. I like The Force Awakens, sort of, even though I don't ultimately think it makes a ton of sense with the movie that resulted so I can't say I love it. I don't like The Last Jedi, because I think it's obnoxious two movies after Return of the Jedi. It might be accurate to use the word hate on that one. Rise of Skywalker is a great title just as a title in a vacuum, but I definitely don't love because I assume it will end up meaningless fan service. JJ is predictable in that way.

 

The Force Awakens has a nice ring and fits the story of Rey. But within the saga, it never really sat with me for some reason. It implies the Force went to sleep at some point, when? It's not really a title with the big picture in mind, just its own story.

Last Jedi is a cool title on its own, but again in the big picture I dislike it for nitpicky reasons. It doesn't mirror with the militaristic-assault theme of the titles of the other middle entries, AOTC and ESB; it reuses the term "Jedi" already used in ROTJ; and moreover, it feels weirdly contradictory to have a movie called "Last Jedi" just two films after "Return of the Jedi".

I like The Rise of Skywalker since it parallels more closely with ROTS and ROTJ as titles, and it seems like a nice conclusion piece to the story. I also just kind of missed the "__ of __" type of titles in general. Though I guess I would have liked if it could have mirrored even more closely? (Maybe 'Revival of the Skywalkers' or something, but maybe that would contradict the story too much, will have to see. And I guess it would have rehashed the acronym of ROTS as well, which would have been irritating.) Still my favorite title of the 3 new ones by far.

 

The Last Jedi is my favourite. The Force Awakens is alright.

The Rise of Skywalker is awful. I was over 'Rise' being in the title of things about 15 movies ago (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rise of the Machines, Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Rise of Cobra, Rise of an Empire, Rise of the Guardians etc) and it's way too focus group to try to win back people who didn't like what happened with Luke in TLJ - "Guys! You didn't like Luke in TLJ? Well, come and see this one!"

None of the titles are great though. They're all taking themselves a bit too seriously and lack any sense of old-timey Flash Gordon serial fun.

 

Overall, the worst set of titles out of the three trilogies. My problems would be that they all start with "The", the second film doesn't describe an action (not to mention it's probably the least imaginative of the nine titles), and the first title is still somewhat unclear.

I like that they kept with the tradition of the third title's action word starting with R, but it still starts with "The" for some reason. Hate is a strong word for my opinion though.

 

Revenge of the The

 

I think The Last Jedi is superficially a good title, but coming only 2 films after Return of the Jedi, it kind of spoils things. Say you're watching the Saga through for the first time - you watch Return of the Jedi - woohoo, they're back! And you'd be expecting them back in a big way, like you saw them in the prequels. Then it's... oh right, after one more film they're all dead again but one.

 

I liked all new titles

 

The Force Awakens is a cool title. I understand now that it means the Force "awakening" in Rey, but prior to seeing the film, I really expected something different. The title doesn't really imply a movie based heavily on a New Hope. Putting the Force into the title makes it seem like the film would be ... well about the Force. It would fit for a Whills type of story like the one in Lucas's drafts.

The Last Jedi is a great title. I'm not a fan of the film. Mainly because I'm not a fan of the titular Last Jedi's characterization. It makes a LOT of sense given the quest in the first film was to find the missing 'Last Jedi' Luke Skywalker, who is finally discovered by Rey in the closing scene of VII. If only Luke's characterization wasn't such a tremendous disappointment. While my first choice by a wide, wide margin would always have been for Lucas to have made this trilogy himself, second choice for Lucas to stay on board at Disney to help helm the story for these films, if this is the story they wanted to tell, I feel like there could have been a great movie created from the plot elements in The Last Jedi. What we got isn't that great movie... but the potential was there.

The Rise of Skywalker, I'll have to wait and see what the title means. I have no spoilers, so these thoughts are entirely my own. I don't have any actual knowledge of the events of the film. If it means the bodily resurrection of Luke Skywalker like Gandalf the White in The Two Towers with a Battle of Helm's Deep moment and a conclusion that leaves him alive to serve as the Yoda type mentor to the next generation of Jedi, I'll love it. If it means Rey Nobody (I don't mind that Rey is a nobody; I think that was fine. I never got a strong sense one way or another that Rey's lineage was important from TFA) taking on the mantle of Skywalker, I'll be severely disappointed. If it means the replacement of Jedi-ism with Skywalkerism as the new order of Force sensitives, I'll be severely disappointed. If it means the redemption of Kylo Ren and the rebirth of Ben Skywalker I'll be severely disappointed (I think Ben should be redeemed, but he was a Solo; To make him the titular Skywalker based on his grandfather would really undermine the sacrifice of Han SOLO, his father, in the first movie; In TFA, Han could have escaped, but willingly sacrificed his life trying to redeem his son. For his son to ultimately be redeemed and then throw away his father's name in favor of his grandfather's name would just be weird. Leia has never even gone by the name Skywalker. It would mean the title should be 'The Rise of Technically a Skywalker Descendant'; Also, 'rise' doesn't really seem like a good synonym for 'redemption') I really, really hope it means the former because it's the only thing that would make any kind of narrative sense to give this trilogy a resonant arc, but I really worry it's the latter 3 choices because they haven't seemed too concerned with creating any type of meaningful overarching plot for these films. The title is the RISE of SKYWALKER. It should feature a Skywalker Rising. There are two suitable options - Luke and Anakin. I'll take either, but would prefer Luke. Anakin hasn't been a presence in this trilogy at all, aside from the burned mask of Vader and Kylo's hero worship of his dead grandfather's discarded evil persona. Luke, for better or worse, in presence and in absence, has been at the center of the plot for the trilogy thus far. For him to just be a passive Force Ghost in the final film while Rey or Ben takes on his name or Anakin rises from the dead would just be thematically... nothing. It would just be a bunch of stuff happening without any real meaning or purpose. They chose the title "Rise of Skywalker" and know damn well that it will make a lot of people hope for y'know... an actual Skywalker. To deliver anything else would be an unnecessary subversion of expectations. I think there are only so many times you can pull the rug out from under your audience before they stop trusting you to deliver and are no longer intrigued. The Force Awakens left people wondering about why Luke was in exile for two years. The Last Jedi made him an abject failure and wanted you to feel stupid for expecting anything else. "You think what? I'm going to walk out with a laser sword and face down the whole First Order?" (Luke disappeared five years ago and has cut himself off from the Force; The First Order was NOT viewed as a real threat by the New Republic, hence Leia's creation of the Resistance militia. Luke didn't sense the destruction of Hosnian Prime (cut off from the Force), so this statement doesn't even make sense - why is he treating the First Order like they're as powerful and influential as the Empire?). The movie ends with Luke doing so as an illusion, setting up the audience for a Ben Kenobi, "Strike me down", death scene, only to reveal he's not really present. Yay! He's alive! He can live on to...... wait... haha surprise, he died anyway! For reasons! Force overdose! Expectations subverted again. If they do it a third time with Rise of Skywalker, setting people up to expect a return with the title, only to disappoint AGAIN... I think they will have exhausted too much good will. That said, I don't expect them to fulfill that expectation. So, at the moment, I'm expecting the title to be disappointing. If I'm wrong, if Luke rises, if they subvert my subverted expectations by actually fulfilling the potential of Luke Skywalker in this movie, I will be very happy.

All that said, weakest of the three trilogies in terms of titles.
