Yeah, but the video was explicitly doing “old/ new” shots of actors that we know are in both trilogies. That was one of its central visual themes. So I don’t think it’s a slap in the face to PT lovers at all. It’s just having fun with cutting back and forth between the fresh-faced youths of 1977 and the early 80s, their older selves, and the youths of the ST. Not everything needs to be interpreted as an apocalyptic insult. Let’s focus on critiquing the films, not a harmless (and warm-spirited) nostalgia video.

 

At this point wish they had just let Rian Johnson do IX. To punish him.

What the hell was he thinking when writing TLJ? It's like he just ignored the fact that his movie was the middle one.

When Disney announced RJ's trilogy, Colin Trevorrow was probably sitting there going crazy trying to write his own IX, cursing RJ's name unitil he went blue in the face. Disney thinks CT's script is awful and fire him.

Then they bring back JJ, and, after JJ assuredly had a tough time writing IX, there is suddenly very little to zero mention of RJ's future trilogy. Hmm.

 

That goes without saying. Dead-last solely among the PT.

I really wish in that scene where C3PO makes that "one last look at my friends" - good god, that fourth wall is getting demolished here - scene, he would then say "and would you bozos kindly get out of the way so I can do that". Then the ST folk awkwardly shuffle out of frame and you see a picture of the OT and PT folk there.

 

Uh, they're marketing Epsiode IX as the end of the Skywalker Saga, but can't even reminisce on the Prequels. Doesn't matter if they're in the film or not, its a celebration of the 9 film saga.

in the past I would see new SW 7-8 times in the theater. So me only seeing it once or twice is a big drop.

I know what happened during the making of Empire and in hindsight, not the best life choices, it sounded way more fun for the actors during the process.

It’s no wonder Trevorrow got fired he had no hope of steadying the ship.

 

I think his problem was not knowing that this isn`t a ship but a submarine. With the "ascend" function broken.

There was that moment at Celebration 2019 it might have been, where Boyega said in an interview something good about TROS and then said 'not like that last one', caught himself like a whoopsie, and moved on.

 

I wouldn't be surprised that CT challenged KK about alot of the creative choices surrounding the TLJ and that probably caused his firing. I am sure if he had a bit of an ego about himself as well that also contributed to him being let go, but I can easily see him having alot of difficulty finalizing his movie due to TLJ's choices. Having Carrie Fisher also pass away I am sure didnt help as well.

If CT wanted more Luke in his movie, I can also see that being a sticking point for KK.

 

Would love to have been a fly on the wall in those conversations with John and Mark!

 

Trevorrow had to imagine one version of his story, and then imagine another version of his story without Leia after that. And who knows how comfortable he, Abrams, or the studio would have been in using deleted footage of Leia from another director's movie: in this case TFA.

 

I really hope Mark Hamill comes out swinging post Ep9 to tell more of the backstory surrounding making this trilogy.

 

Speaking of Boyega, TROS would have been better with some kind of cliff hanger involving Finn getting captured, going to the dark side, maimed, tortured, etc. Something to create tension for TROS, make his character more meaningful, and give a fine actor more to work with heading into IX.

 

Rey gets gravely injured in the throne room by the P-guards, and is taken to safety by Kylo Ren off the burning Supremacy .... meanwhile Phasma recaptures Finn - who has broken his programming/brainwashing and has defected from the FO cult and finally made a free conscious choice to join the Resistance - and promises to re-program him.

That's a cliffhanger. And instead of being here in this thread, I'd be in the other one impatiently waiting, wondering what happens to them next.

 

I have been praising the prequels for 20 years, so your last sentence is quite irrelevant to me. As for the movie itself, I'll have finished my 20 years anniversary review in the appropriate topic by tonight, so we can discuss it there if you want. I think it's a beautiful film.

Well first of all, there is a distance equal to the distance from here to Andromeda, between referencing a couple of pretty trivial visuals in the Mandalorian, such as a few pit droids and super battle droids, and showing footage from an entire trilogy which is supposed to be 33% (though in reality it's 50%) of the saga you are trying to advertise in your featurette. The first one is completely harmless. No one will stop watching the Mandalorian because it has pit droids and Super Battle Droids. Can you imagine The Mandalorian introducing a Gungan? Now THAT would be priceless. I'd love to see the reactions of the sensitive ones whose childhood was ruined.

The problem with the featurette is that it is supposed to make us feel the grandeur of a 42 year and 9 movie adventure, while at the same time it completely ignores a whole decade and 3 movies.

Come on. I know you love Kathleen Kennedy, but this is wrong. It completely omits footage and characters that were much more pivotal than Poe or Finn to what will happen in TROS and how it is all interconnected. How can you ignore Anakin and Padme? Literally the first Skywalker couple to procreate. There is absolutely no way this promo just "happened" to not have any prequel footage. This is a deliberate effort to not alienate the guys with the ruined childhood and the midichlorian haters. It's marketing at its best (or worst, depending on how someone sees it)

 

Ah, but it's America! Violence, patricide, dismembering, genocide, star system killing - all fine - but no sex!

Because it was just a small featurette focusing on the new characters and the OT3, who appear in both the OT and ST (including Lando)...Notice the inter-cutting of their young and older selves. And of course it heavily focused on Carrie, who passed away and is being honored.

Finally, this isn’t the thesis statement for the TROS advertising campaign. It’s just one little video.

Does that really rise to the level of “disgusting?”
