[dryly] a bit more wordy than what you'd have in a movie, unless you were doing a clip show alongside it, but that's the perk of a book

Thank you! On re-read it looks less like his Crait speech and more like his commentary on the Jedi on Ach-To, only much less cranky—which is a very good thing, and the commentary itself is on point.

Unifying Force was so good. That book, Traitor, Edge Of Victory and Star By Star are what made NJO so god-tier. Some of the best storytelling in all of Star Wars, IMO. And a lot of it had to do with my investment in the new characters, moreso than the old guard like Han, Luke and Leia.

There were times where I'd be tempted to skim through the chapters with Han and Leia, simply because I was more invested in what was going on with their kids. That's how you know the writers did a good job with the development and characterization of the Solo children.

And it's something I never experienced once while following the empty mannequins constituting as protagonists in the ST. (Which is doubly-embarassing, given the hilarious lengths these movies go to get you to care about Kylo).

You just listed all my favorites. The NJO showed how to get a new generation to take over and the OT3 to pass the torch without making it a ridiculous battle where the OT3 are too “perfect” and “have to” be torn down in order to prop up the new generation. The new generation characters shone just fine on their own, with the older generation as mentors. And they fought the scariest villains in Star Wars outside of Palpatine.

I’m a big fan of Allston’s books in the series as well, Rebel Dream and Rebel Stand

Traitor is a good read and Star by Star is basically the only Denning book I like.

    Hm.
Sounds like 'It's so much bigger', from that trailer.
    Also:

Obi-Wan is called 'wizard' in ANH. Those middle-earth wizards help others to help themselves, and forge alliances and so on, and they are 'ever on the move', just like the force in Luke's speech. That's what the Mandalorian ('others') seems to be about.

I made the connection with “it’s so much bigger” as well, which is why I thought those were both good speeches. Great commentary on dogmatic organized religion focused more on traditionalism than the deity they claim to serve.

Hey, nothing wrong with bidding someone “Dark Greetings!” on your way to a Mofference aboard a Moffship.

Remember all those theories that Luke was going to come back in a big way in Episode IX (it's called Rise of Skywalker ffs)? Nope, just a cameo with a bad wig.

If “Mofference” is not actually a real word, I’m going to be sad.

Obligatory post about being sad that the Knights of Ren never once said (anything) "I bid you dark greetings!"

Wonder if Luke would've tried harder to keep Ben away from them if they'd been like that?

Cool characters don't talk. thats what makes them menacing.

Side note. whether people wanna argue about books and comics in canon. i am fairly certain that Ren character is 100% canon.

I always thought The knights of ren was bunch of gangs and never jedi like RJ seems to have thought aswell as JJ thought when they did nothing in TROS. They were a bunch of cool Boba Fetts.

Im far more upset that they didnt even get a proper fight scene. They were literally only in the movie to get slaughtered in 10 seconds by Kylo.

Luke killed them in that MSW leak. Or maybe it was FG Luke. Trevorrow was writing IX at the time (Jan/Feb.2017)

Who knows. But that scene is not far from TROS.
If you remove Palpatine from IX and move some basic elements/beats to the first act or the first>second act, that is: Rey and (FG) Luke together in the island on one side vs Kylo and his knights on the other, after following her. Then Kylo and Rey dueling, etc.

In any case, Luke fights them in the Kylo Ren comic, so he knew about those 'ghouls'.

And then the visual dictionary gave them half a dozen pages to go over them and their weapons and ship and leaves the reader going "Well gee, sure would've been nice if we could've SEEN them do anything."

Could've cut out Canto Bight and have Luke tell Rey about his encounter with them and how Ben fell to the Dark Side, but naaaah

I hear what you are saying but, if Lucas is the one who set Luke up as a hermit/Kurtz type, that means Lucas is the one who turned Luke away from the most optimistic character into something more cynical. We can argue about the details of who/why Luke became cynical, but it seems as if this was a George Lucas invention. Being a "Kurtz" like character means what it means and it was always going to be a 180 from what Luke was in the OT.

    Also....
Mark Hamill is on record as saying that, as far back as the early 80's, George Lucas had told him of a 3rd trilogy and that Luke would be the Obi-Wan of the trilogy.

In some ways yes. Indy's character evolution and expansion was in line what had come before. Yet, the macguffin was viewed by many as flying in the face of what came before. Don't get me wrong, I dug ancient aliens and crystal skulls, but this very much was the primary example of Lucas shaking up the formula and bucking trends of what had come before in the Indiana Jones franchise.

How much do these details matter? Are you saying you would have enjoyed Luke as a dejected, cynical, burn out version of his former self if the reasons for this character change would have been more compelling?

    Exactly. Exactly. Exactly.
