I think they have to at least talk about Trevor, even if he doesn't show up in person. It'd be too much of an unexplained point of confusion to the audience to not have the whole Mandarin title resolved, since they can't assume most of the audience has seen All Hail the King. Also, if we assume this film is primarily set in 2023 or 2024 (within a year or so of Endgame), then the "ten years" flashback elements would be set in 2013-2014, in a pre-Ultron, possibly pre-Winter Soldier timeframe. But definitely a post-Iron Man 3 timeframe and, very likely, a post-AHTK timeframe. And that actually would allow for Trevor to show up pretty easily without establishing a whole decade of backstory. And you're probably onto something there with the arm bands approach to distinguish things from the Infinity Gauntlet. The arm bands could also evoke notions of technologic magic ala the energy bands that form around Strange and other wizards when casting some spells (albeit the Time Stone being the most obvious one).
Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see where Shang Chi and the Legends of the Tens falls on the MCU timeline. If it's pre-blip, theoretically, Iron Man could make an appearance. And if the story line doesn't take place during the blip, Ant-Man and the Wasp (with Scott Lang and Hope Pym San Francisco residents) could appear, but very unlikely. However, it would be fun if this guy did... It would be amazing if Shang Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings introduced this character to the MCU... Spoiler
May I just drop in that the arm rings are a nod to the metal arm rings used in some real martial arts and old school Kung Fu movies. They were the weapon Bloody Devil -one of my favorite Shaw Brothers villains- deployed to take out problematic opponents. So it’s very cool to see the ten rings in question rethought into a traditional martial arts tool/weapon. I like the idea the rings are empowered with some unknown energy, perhaps from the multiverse? Enjoying the trailer. I am very rusty as far as Shang-Chi. Outside of the Battle World Master of Kung Fu mini series, I haven’t read anything else recently. The trailer does make me think they might use some of the Battle World storyline for the trials (or tournament) footage we see. I like the Shaw Brothers/Zhang Yimou style of the fight scenes already.
I think I first read Shang Chi in the very early 80's, though the Deadly hands of Kung Fu issue was from 1975, issue 15. And they shalt now take my money.
In that EW interview above, Simu says he trained in Wushu and Tai Chi for three weeks a piece. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other styles and made up Kung Fu too. Wushu is the national martial art of China (the style Donnie Yen’s mother was a grandmaster in), it’s mostly for show and competition rather than a fight style. It is used in wuxia though. Tai Chi often looks very gentle, but when applied with force, it can be devastating. I hope to see some fan work and other weapons besides swords. I wonder if Tony Leung will use Wing Chun as Wenwu (Tony was the title character in Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster which was about Bruce Lee’s Wing Chun master.) Also, I wonder who Michelle Yeoh will be (Hoping to see more sword forms and other great moves from her, in addition to excellent acting.)
I'm thinking Michelle Yeoh will be... Spoiler: speculation, could be wrong the Death Dealer (Shifu to Shang Chi) as that character looks to be female and been at the side of the Mandarin. Michelle Yeoh will be another actor to play two different characters in the MCU. I wonder if she still can perform as a martial artists. She's seems to be taking on more traditional acting roles. The films I remember seeing in were Crazy Rich Asians and Last Christmas and she was wonderful in both films.
Marvel loves to co-opt genres and mush them into their Universe. Marvelized martial arts action... okay. Let's give it a shot.
Well, yeah. I mean, consider the source material. Marvel created the character, Shang Chi, to capitalized on the kung fu craze of the 1970s.
I thought Spoiler Death Dealer might be her. I love that she’s diving deeper into acting (I agree she was marvelous in both of those movies.) Michelle absolutely blew me away when I saw Wing Chun (the Tofu tray fight is so epic.) Ms. Yeoh can still perform martial arts with ease. Her expertise begins at 2.30. Her cameo as a crime boss was a highlight of Master Z: Ip Man Legacy (I recommend renting it. I prefer it over Donnie Yen’s Ip Man movies.) Speaking of Ms. Yeoh, She very briefly mentions Shang-Chi at 3:23
@Master_Lok Thanks for the Master Z: Ip Man Legacy recommendation. That clip of Michelle Yeoh shows she's still got it. Thanks for the BBC interview with Yeoh as well, as shows her more than actress but an activist for young women. She's so awesome.
She is. I am so happy she gets to enjoy a Hollywood which now gives her many different characters to play (and that Hong Kong still calls too.) I’d love to see her team up with Cynthia Rothrock again, but I digress. I hope you like Master Z. Anyway, I hope Michelle is Spoiler Death Dealer in Shang-Chi.
Well, if color coding still applies, we see blue energy suggesting Space ability (but it's sort of a darker blue, which I believe we've seen before somewhere but I forget where) with purple tendrils, suggesting Power abilities and/or the Dark Dimension ala Agatha.
I want to say just purple since she was using dark magic but her mom/coven used blue (which Agatha absorbed). Cue the Mandarin/Agatha All Along mash-up in 3, 2, 1...
Well, they may be bracelets for a human But on a Spoiler Dragon they might be ring sized. Hoping that June/July trailer gives us: Spoiler Everyone's favorite purple short wearing Dragon!
It only looks "ok" to me. Don't know much about it, will go into the movie with little expectations. Though I also tend to not like martial arts -focused movies.
Oh Michelle Yeoh Spoiler is not Death Dealer. Michelle is playing Jiang Nan, the Mother of Jiang Li (Li is fighting Shang-Chi in the wuxia forest. Li wears the straw hat and green robe) Cast and crew at IMDb.com https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9376612/
I’m wondering if this is all going to tie into Eternals in a way. It feels like most of the Marvel artifacts that are “magic” are actually advanced/ancient technology. So far only Doctor Strange and Wandavision have given us “true” magic where Thor is mostly alien but with Odin and other having special abilities (like Freya being raised by witches). Anyway, Spoiler If Fin Fang Foom were technically an alien with alien rings, that would explain the armbands and the energy they give off.
