BREAKING NEWS

We have the second no-hitter in the OOTP era of FODEUSS. But, we still only have one pitcher who has tossed a no-hitter.

Old Hoss Radbourn was absolutely dominant on August 19th against Amazings, with only a leadoff walk drawn by Stan Musial denying him a perfect game. Hoss struck out 21 in the effort, and was backed by two two-run homers from Dick Allen, as the Enhancers took the game, winning by a score of 5-0.

 

Oh, sure, just casually tossing a no-no and setting the single game strikeout record at the same time...

 

I, for one, am shocked I was no hit.

Amazing.

With Randy Johnson and Charlie Sweeney on the mound, the 63,597 fans on hand in this one had a good chance of seeing a pitchers duel in this one

But, nobody could have expected just how much of a pitchers duel we would end up getting.

Johnson went seven innings. He gave up no runs, he allowed just two hits, he struck out nine, and he walked one. He got a no decision.

Sweeney also sent seven innings, and he also gave up no runs. He, too, allowed just two hits, striking out seven and walking none. He, too, got a no decision.

Charlie Bender was first out of the pen for the Demonbags. He struck out three on his way to two hitless, scoreless innings. Charles Smith gave A Shaq of Their Own a scoreless inning, as did Rob Dibble, and that took us through nine innings with no runs scored.

We were heading to extra-innings. And this game wasn't even halfway over. Literally.

Both managers would send out a series are pitchers. And both teams would continue to not score runs.

C. C. Sabathia, Ice Box Chamberlain, Hal Newhouser, and Felix Hernandez all put up goose eggs for the Demonbags, while Deacon White, Phil Douglas, and Noodles Hahn did the same for A Shaq of Their Own.

In the interest of time, we'll pick this one up with Ron Guidry pitching for the Demonbags, and Spud Chandler opposing him.

Chandler took over in the top of the 18th with one on and one out. He would get Ken Griffey Jr. to fly out and get Al Rosen to strike out. Guidry would take over with two outs in the bottom of the 18th, and he would strike out George Sisler to send us to the 19th.

Chandler would get a 1-2-3 19th, and Guidry would work around a two-out single from John Meyers to keep it scoreless and headed to the 20th.

Chuck Knoblauch would lace a one-out double off of Chandler in the top of the 20th, but Spud would strike out Bag-and-a-half and Guidry to send us to the bottom of the inning, where a 1-2-3 inning from Guidry sent us to the 21st.

Then, after falling behind in the count 0-2, Ken Griffey Jr. watched a close pitch get called a ball, and then connected - connected on the 1-2 offering from Chandler, sending it 386 feet and over the wall for a go-ahead homer. Chandler would need just seven more pitches to retire the next three batters, but for the first time all night, someone would be pitching with a lead as we went to the bottom of the 21st inning.

Guidry stayed on, and got Troy Tulowitzki to ground out to start the inning. George Sisler grounded out on the very next pitch for the second out, and Shoeless Joe Jackson made it three groundouts in the inning - collapsing in a heap - to finally end the marathon game.

Of particular note in this noteworthy game:

San Francisco batted 12-for-73 in this game for an anemic .164 batting average that looks downright Ruthian compared to the 4-for-66 (.061) for a Shaq of Their Own.

Tris Speaker set a FODEUSS record for strikeouts in a game, with five. On the whole, the teams combined for 46 - 23 each.

Chuck Knoblauch and Ken Griffey Jr. set a FODEUSS record for most at-bats in a game, with nine each.

Knoblauch left more runners on base (9) than Shaq had baserunners (7).

August 18th: Jimmy Rollins of Every City Bandwagoners suffered a mild hmastring strain while running the bases, and is expected to be day-to-day for about a week.
August 18th: Catfish Hunter of stone temple seattle pilots had a cold.
August 19th: Diagnosis came back on Snuffy Stirnweiss of Plansecape Tormentors, and it wasn't good news. He's got a strained anterior cruciate ligament, and will miss six weeks.
August 21st: Duke Snider of Let's Play Two suffered an "unspecified injury" and the team will be keeping him out for at least four days
August 21st: Greg Maddux of Let's Play Two has mild shoulder inflammation, and is going to be day-to-day for about two weeks
August 21st: Shohei Ohtani of Newport Beach Motherboys will miss about three weeks after being diagnosed with chronic back soreness. Clearly the sim was calculating how he tried to carry the real-life Angels on his back this year.
August 21st: Fred Dunlap of Planescape Tormentors injured his groin while running the bases. It's a mid strain, and he'll be day-to-day for about five days
August 21st: Chris Carpenter of Planescape Tormentors is dealing with some forearm soreness, and is expected to be day-to-day for about five days. Which really doesn't seem worth mentioning for a starting pitcher if we're being honest.
August 22nd: Hideo Nomo of Reseda Free Fallers was injured while pitching, and his wrist soreness is expected to keep him day-to-day for about four days.
August 22nd: Rob Dibble of A Shaq of THeir Own has shoulder tendinitis, and is expected to be day-to-day for about a week. No word on whether Jerry Saggs will take his place in the bullpen.
August 22nd: Herb Score of Amazings has a dead arm, is going to take three days off.
August 23rd: Dave S Smith of Planescape Tormenters suffered a mild hamstring strain while pitching, and is expected to be day-to-day for about three days.
