I would like to say this, I think the HR in general does a good job of having non-Jedi characters as main characters. Compared to say the post-NJO.

Does anyone know how old Oppo Ranciss is by time of High Republic and later by Clone Wars, he seems qite younger in this era even tough he sounds old in the audio book. Do we know how long his species live for, could he live as long as Yoda and Yaddle. We know live longed characters get old fast and remain old for 200 years like Yoda.

A few ideas about possible sources of inspiration for HR villains:

For the Drengir it is most likely the Xenomorph (especially after introduction of the Great Progenitor).

And for the Marchion Ro, IMO, it is Euron Greyjoy (book version) - charismatic leader of the pirates (although forced to use cunning and eloquence to control them), having a title of Eye and ship with silent crew and magical artefacts.

I really hope Starlight Beacon is not destroyed yet.

It’s only the end of phase 1 with still two phases to go.

I doubt more Starlight Beacons are going to be created, and this one has only finished construction a little over a year ago.

It should last timeline wise longer.

We haven’t had much of the HR story focus on Starlight anyways.

Yeah, since the story started with the opening of Starlight it should end with it's end.

    But we shall see.

You know... when you figure out what THE HIGH REPUBLIC is really doing it gets more interesting and yet more awkward too... and you cannot unsee it!

I mean, despite all influences, THR is Star Wars: DS9!!!!!!!!!!!

Fancy space station and its crew dealing with problems near and far. DS9 too had three phases kinda with various villains that fit THR villains like a glove. First the Nihil are the Cardassians, next the Drengir are the shapeshifters hiding in plain sight and infiltrating the galaxy before being figured out. The Vorta (clones in Star Trek of a humanoid species) may appear soon enough too I bet. All together tie and connect to the Dominion and the final phase then?
Also DS9 presented other interesting concepts with religion vs space gods like Jedi deal with the Force and turning the Federation from science and progress in peacetime towards a major war, warships and intelligence on the rise, something THR is navigating towards, even if maybe averted in the end and postponed to the PT era it builds towards?

Now with THE UNNAMED coming up, I wonder what they match to and how the Federation/Jedi/Republic do something to them they do not deserve. That alone springs in my mind some paralells of misunderstandings and warcrimes from DS9 I might analyse more when we got more intel.

And Sullustans as Ferengi is my new headcanon!

More detailed DS9 - SW THR matches I might post later, let me know if you find more!

I've been keeping an open mind with these books and as stories themselves I've enjoyed them reasonably well, but I still come back to the same gripe I had when this was first announced, that the timeframe is just too close to the main saga for me to engage in it properly.

I'm not crazy about how the expectation is that everyone is reading everything. I've mainly been following the 'adult' books, with a brief dip in to YA land for Claudia Gray, but I've been hearing that the comics and audiobooks and YA books are all getting major plot points even with the 'adult' Nihl storyline, and I'm not really looking to invest in a massive 19-book saga again. I'd much prefer each format have its own thing going, with cameos our check-ins with the other plotlines, and then I can expand to each new medium as I'm interested. But making everything mandatory is giving me bad NJO flashbacks.

I mean the comics were mostly their own thing and I don't think any YA books have affected the main ones aside from some characters. It isn't inter connected like NJO. It is more like the marvel movies.

I'm not sure I agree that the expectation is that everyone is reading everything. There's been crossover between the various mediums of storytelling but for the most part each has stayed in their respective corners of the project imo. The Drengir, for example, have barely appeared in the adult novels, so if you're just following the 'main' line of books there's no need to get caught up on the comics. The High Republic Adventures and the current arc of the Marvel comic heavily involve the Nihil, sure, but they're telling smaller side stories within the greater conflict that are centralised around those series' respective casts. Those storylines will probably be referenced in the upcoming adult novels, but I doubt they'll have that big an impact - and if they do, the novel will likely fill in whatever you need to know through exposition anyway (case in point; I read the Drengir arcs of the Marvel comic before I got around to Into the Dark and still never felt lost, even though I'd technically missed the 'beginning' of the story).

So I heard the vonduun crab (of the Yuuzhan Vong in Legends) is appearing in one of the High Republic comics?

Yes in the adventures comic. They live on a planet, though the wording is ambiguous enough that they might be an introduced species.

Phase 1.2 has been far more connected than Phase 1.1 where there was a looser sense of connection.

There were a couple of bits in Rising Storm where I was wondering where a plot came from, as the comic trades were not out yet, the same effect results for those reading digitally via Marvel Unlimited. They need to not assume everyone is reading the comics monthly as they have done for phase1.2

I was a bit disappointed that Tempest Runner didn't tie in more closely with Out of the Shadows.

Chancey Yarrow didn't even get a mention in TR.

Although I am really loving this new era of Star Wars and all of the new characters and events within it, I hope as the Storygroup goes forward, there is a few "conflicted" characters within the Jedi ranks who start to question their teachings and rebel against them.

After finishing The Rising Storm, I feel this could be a possibility with Elzar Mann's character; who is probably my favourite Jedi character to date within this new era. As I read and watch all of these Star Wars stories, I tend to find myself gravitating towards these conflicted characters as I find these types of characters the most interesting to watch and read about. The rest of the Jedi have been pretty good, but without these inner conflicts going on, I find most other Jedi characters bland and not exhibiting much in terms of character growth. Without the conflict impacting on characterization, the blandness of the other Jedi just remind me more of Superhero / Marvel characters that have extraordinary powers, but don't seem to grow too much from the events they have just experienced - they simply remain the same character from story to story. I realise that the Jedi have a certain way in how one must act and operate within, but that's the reason why there needs to be those conflicted and who question their teachings.

I want more conflict within a few more Jedi; just like the conflict that is appearing in Elzar Mann. Not all Jedi deviating from their teachings and the "Jedi" way, just a few. I want these few to evolve and change from what they have experienced as characters. I want them to dabble in the Dark Side (like Elzar did) because they get to the point in their minds that this is the only way to defeat the enemy. All characters cant just remain the same after all of these massive events caused by the Nihil; with all of the pain and suffering and death - including Jedi deaths. There have to be those Jedi who really get affected by whats going on and who cant suppress the negative emotions they are feeling.

As mentioned before, its the reason why Elzar is my character so far; along with Marchion Ro - who I find a really interesting, ruthless and evil bad person.

For me, the characterization needs to get to the same level as those main characters of the Alphabet Squadron trilogy. Individualize the Jedi and not just through their different abilities. Have them different shades of light, have them driven by different things.... just have them different to each other; whilst still having them within the boundaries of what they need to show to be still within the Jedi way.

Pretty sure Keeve Trennis is going to be conflicted at some point.

    This sounds pretty promising.

I can't remember coming across Keeve Trennis yet as the money can only stretch so far with continual releases of new stories. But I will look forward to his/her story when I do get around to buying that story.

And if the character is like Elzar Mann, then I will really look forward to it.

Is it all of the High Republic comics, or is it a specific comic? I might prioritize that comic if its singular.

The main Marvel one stars Keeve.

I'm speculating about her because of Dooku: Jedi Lost though. There's Master Trennis counted among the Lost with a bust in the Jedi Archives.
