Mini Series The Book of Boba Fett 1.04 - Chapter 4 - Discussion Thread (Spoilers Allowed)

Really liked this episode. Not quite as strong as Episode 2 but on a similar level to the last one, which I actually liked. I do agree the direction was a lot smoother in this one, though I also believe 45-50 minutes episodes just work better, than the 30 minute format, this episode proved that again imo. It did feel a bit like checking boxes before really starting into the gang war but some of those boxes, like the setup for the Boba/Fennec relationship also really needed to get checked.

I did find it a bit anticlimactic that Boba apparently spend 5 years roaming the Dune Sea and it confuses me a bit, since for me it didn't seem like he spent that much time with the Tuskens. I like the idea of Boba finding familial connection with the Tuskens but it seemed like he just lived with them for a couple of weeks and then spent 5 years planning to get his ship back from Bib, which is a bit weird tbh.

Also some of the dialogue is really cringe worthy. I didn't mind the Firespray line but Fennecs expositiony talk to the crime leaders at the beginning of the meeting was just horrific. This is basically how not to write dialogue. The rest of the meeting was really good, though. I also didn't mind the meeting only taking place at this point in time, what was bad was Boba only getting briefed on the Mos Espa situation in Ep 3. Not knowing it in detail before taking over was ok in my opinion but getting that briefing only a couple of days after taking him over just really made him seem stupid.

The Krsantann scene in this episode was really good and made much more sense than recruiting him straight after he tried to kill Boba. I never thought Boba should have killed him and I do like that Boba just hired him and there was no life debt involved, it wouldn't really have fit the character.

Also after complaining about Fennec being a minor character while supposedly being the co-lead of this show this episode really had a lot of her and it was really good. With the flashbacks seemingly wrapped up now, I'm very intrested to see where this show goes when it can devote all its runtime to telling one story, though I am a bit afraid that we'll only get 30 minute episodes now that they are just telling one storyline.

 

Sing Boba wipe the gang was great as well

 

It’s going to come together with the Mandalorian soon. So what if Boba ends up with the darksaber? Would be a cool twist.

Imagine if she was on the sail barge and saw Boba's performance. She would have had a Colin Firth - Bridget Jones's Diary face for at least a year.

Didn't Boba explicitly say that he needs Fennec because she has a brain?

I feel like Boba being not super bright may be something the writers really had in mind. i'm re-evaluating the show with this interpretative key.

 

I am a bit sad that he is now done with his aquarium dreams. I had a bet with my wife that at some point he will call himself Captain Underpants.

It was mentioned in a Mando BTS feature that the droid Din spoke with was the same as the one from Jabba’s.

 

Also it was real cool seeing those clone wars droids in live action

 

I liked this episode. First four episodes were a slog but now we have motivation, done with burdensome flashbacks, and the stage is set for the original trilogy hunters to come back (Krrsantan is gonna have a hard time cooperating with Bossk, after all)

Yeah I don’t think the writer’s intention was to portray Boba as stupid. That’s ridiculous. If that were the case it completely failed on me because I don’t find him stupid at all.

 

Pretty much this. He just realized it’s good to have smart people on their side

 

Just look through the thread. Plenty of people enjoyed it. I thought it was great, and a definite improvement from their depiction last week.

 

Alright, l will likely vote 7, as for episode 2, but I'll need to watch it again when less sleepy.
Let's start with some pros

- Duh? The sexy yellow Twilek.
- I loved the whole kitchen scene. Seeing food being prepare really contributes to making the world feel real. I want more of every-day-life moments like this.
- The chicken droid was a cute comic relief
- The shot of Fennec being a badass right after she opens the gate.
- While I'm no fan of the cyberpunks, the actual scene where they save Fennec was interesting.
- Believe it or not, there was a moment where I actually enjoyed the dialogue. It was when Fennec says that living with the Tusken made him weak, and he replies that it actually made him stronger.
- I liked when he sees the signal from Mando 1.5 and they make Mando's iconic sound.
- I loved that the aliens were done with practical effects here, including the bantha.
- Garsa Fwip trying to persuade the wookie was fun.

 

People even liked last episode

 

Din would literally hand it over without a fight or fuss - he didn't want it in the first place

 

Boba wouldn't want the dark saber.

 

That was my take on it too but since we the audience know what happened to his armor the scene of him trying to get his armor out of the sarlacc felt unnecessary.

Why do they need to show us that Boba doesn't remember that he had his armor on when he got out of the sarlacc? I think it's because if he remembered that the jawas took the armor they would have to tell the story of how Boba tracked down the jawas who took his armor and they just didn't want to tell that story this week.

 

Probably cuts through Pykes pretty nicely. He could always tape it to the end of his gaffi stick.

 

I really ,really want to like this show. The problem for me is that, outside the stellar second episode, I just don't find the show to be that good. Reasonable people may disagree on that, but I'd be lying if I said this observation of mine doesn't create an obstacle to me liking the show.

The writing, the pacing, the internal logic ... none of it holds up well IMO. But beyond that, once we strip away backstory and fan-service elements, it just doesn't feel to me like this story would play out on Tatooine, specifically. There's too much here that doesn't harmonize with what I've seen of Tatooine previously. I suppose that's one reason why I liked the flashback portions more.

That said, this episode was ok -- better than the third episode. I'm still rather amazed at how ill-prepared Boba was before he offed Bib.
