Or, and this is always the saddest tell, when they suggest that if a fictional character can be made black, then why can't a historical black person be made white?

I feel it's related, but I'm still annoyed that the Karate Kid remake had the "white person training wheels" character that existed for establishing the whole thing then fading anway but wasn't needed at all. It very much felt like someone said "wait wait wait, we can't make this movie, how can white people watch this? They won't know if they're supposed to like the main character"

good video about how black history is taught to us without the radical socialism that was a part of the civil rights movement

When I've addressed this particular line of reasoning by showing that POC existed in Medieval Europe -including by providing actual Medieval European art depictions of actual POC- the mental gymnastics to reject the evidence has been perversely amusing to observe [face_mischief][face_coffee]

Reject? What are they rejecting to? And how the the hell do they address the rise of the Islamic caliphate during medieval times?

16 months in jail, the rest under supervised release. Duarte’s father was correct, it’s a slap on the wrist. Her contrition may be genuine and she may pose no further threat to the public, but that sentence is far too lenient. He was a 20 year old guy with his life ahead of him. He deserved better.

Like...how often does the judge in a case weep for the condemned?

I didn’t realise the judge had wept. After a quick Google, I also learned that she asked the Wright family to feel “empathy” for Potter and to try to “walk in someone else’s shoes”.

In any circumstances, trying to illicit sympathy for the killer from the family of the victim is pretty unpleasant. I would be more inclined to suggest that Potter walk a mile in the shoes of the Wright family and see if she would be inclined towards leniency and forgiveness in such circumstances. I’m going to guess that she would not.

    Taken from the Russia thread.

The irony is that this kind of list makes convenient cover for racists in these countries: "See we're not racists, it's those colored peoples who are the real racists!"

Police officer fatally shoots a bystander during a no-knock raid (Breonna Taylor), and is found not guilty of endangering bystanders. Incredible.

It was a chaotic situation (created by the cops’ use of a no-knock warrant), but nothing can excuse his reckless actions. Hankison fired blindly into a window because a shot was heard from inside a building. I don’t think it gets much more dangerous than that.

If she was turned away due to her skin color, fine, I agree that’s messed up.

However, Zoe Kravitz has a very alternative, hippie-esque vibe to a lot of her recent roles that she’s leaned into and given that she was like 20-22 years old at the time… I kind* of agree with the “urban” (if true) description.

I haven’t seen Batman yet, but I have struggled a lot in the past with watching her in roles and not immediately getting the hipster vibe from her.
