IMO, How to Train Your Dragon did it better, and three times in a row.

Twice, at least. ;) The third one wasn't as good as the first two (suffered from a rather repetitive villain). But otherwise agreed.

That actually brings up something to keep an eye open for that I hadn't thought about before. We know a lot of the repeat viewings for A1 were from audiences wanting to escape to a new place and see exotic wildlife, etc during a time when economic factors turned vacations into staycations, etc ("Not in this economy", as the film meta-commented on).

Well, folks have been locked inside or unable to travel or vacation due to lockdowns or health and safety concerns (and, now supply chain cost increases being an additional factor) for the past 2+ years. That actually might end up driving some business for the film the same it did for its predecessor. Or at least add another layer to the general appeal.

And as someone mentioned above, when comparing this to so many of the other blockbusters we get these days, Avatar is totally earnest in all of its sensibilities, which makes it all the more appealing a draw (even if it isn't on a totally conscious level) as a world one would theoretically want to escape into, rather than one so filled with snark or attempts to sort of 'apologize' for the silly nature of the source material, the names, the costumes, etc. Like Otto Octavius' name being the source of some long, drawn out, ill-advised joke that (for me, at least) fell totally flat on its face in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and actually took me out of the movie by essentially making a mockery of the campy character name as if it is something the film is ashamed to be associated with, instead of taking it and wearing it on its sleeve with pride.

Laugh all you want at Unobtanium or whatever, but Avatar isn't laughing with you or cracking jokes about itself. It's inherently pulpy/silly/campy/whatever term you want to apply, it is space opera, but it never looks down on itself for being that. It owns that that's what it is and trusts that the audience will buy into the world and do the same.

The teaser in theaters in definitely a teaser. But I found the audience reaction interesting- not a loud, uniform reaction like the Thor teaser got, but after it was clear after the first few scenes that this wasn't a rerelease of the first film or something for the theme park, there were unironic claps of glee, while the emotional "family" line stinger caused some audible gasps as it hit.

Which I think means it is playing to the "not the fandom but the general audience"-type analysis that we've been discussing; that it hits for people who don't talk about it. It'll be interesting to see the reaction tonight and tomorrow and see how it compares.

Did you watch the teaser in 2D?

The 2D version didn't wow me at all. But the 3D version looks much more impressive and immersive.

Unfortunately the only 3D IMAX showtime is in the afternoon, none of the primetime showings. And I’m not sure I’m going to see Strange a 4th time just to catch it in 3D (though it’s tempting) or downgrade to a RealD for a better showtime.

I saw the trailer before MoM in 3D. It looks beautiful, I'll be there opening night because it'll be something to do. I'm sure it'll be fun.

Oh, what a funny coincidence. The 3D IMAX showing was the fourth one for me.

Was that a video game cut scene from 2011?

I didn’t like the first film, and have been cynical about this franchise since 2009, but I gotta admit, that trailer in front of Dr Strange was pretty engaging. Guess it’s true what they say; never bet against Cameron…

No matter what images they throw at me, I will reject it all as long as it's branded with the Papyrus font.

The trailer doesn't look very impressive in 2D, but it looks a bit more enticing in 3D.

I'm sure it's going to get chewed up by the critics by the time of its release, but I don't really care. I'm excited for it.

3D showtimes are more limited now (only 4:15pm 3D showings in IMAX until Thursday, after which they go away), so I couldn't catch it in 3D for my three showings of MOM this weekend, but in IMAX the teaser is pretty impressive still in 2D because you can really catch the finer details. Even in just a youtube video, the underwater mo-cap and p-cap technology they've developed for this film has had incredible results (as we see with the one child Na'vi inspecting something in wonder).

It looked like Jake and Neytiri have two children, one a female Na'vi and the other apparently a human boy. Considering it's a time-skip from the last movie, I'm wondering if they're leading to an eventual film where the children take up the leading roles. I'd love to see the girl taking up a lead role at some point.
