Discussion What We Do in the Dark Side: Taika Waititi to direct/co-write new Star Wars film

He is working on Star Wars and forgot one of the leads on previous star wars trilogy. I would like and hope he cares about Star Wars.

 

It’s also entirely possible that, you know… he’s joking. He mentions both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in the full video interview, so he clearly, like the rest of the world, knows those films exist.

 

Who cares? Seriously unless he was making a Young Padme film why does it matter? Guess who said this…

Tony Gilroy. The guy who already made one of the best Star Wars films and is now showrunner on what looks to be a fantastic series. Seriously this need for the filmmakers to be super fans who know everything about the films like we do is kind of silly. Is it not enough that they just make good Star Wars films? They can do that without immediately remembering Natalie Portman was in Star Wars.

 

Sometimes it works and somtimes they dont. As MCU has proven with their recent movies and tv shows. Taika even has doubts his movie being made. And the visuals of Thor love and Thunder, is almost like looking at a video game. 2025 for this if it gets made at all

 

What does any of that have to do with him not remembering Natalie was in Star Wars?

 

Its the details and way he speaks of her role in them. Sure he nows they exist, almost sounds like he is making fun of it.

 

You’re reading far more into this than you should. It was a simple self-deprecating joke about how he forgot Natalie Portman was in Star Wars and you’re acting like that somehow makes him a bad choice for Star Wars. You’re being ridiculous. Go back and watch his episode of The Mandalorian and tell me he can’t direct Star Wars.

 

He can direct yess, but can he write one. And even the one he directed had that one slap stick meta stormtroopers bad shoots. I havent liked his Thor movies. So it will be a test if he can do it. Will be divisive like RJ's The Last Jedi?

I think there a place for humor and meta but that one just didnt work for me. It seemed get into the whole complaint of stormtroopers are bad shoots. Does he write the Thor movies if so im worried.

He co-wrote Love and Thunder. When he was announced they also said he’d have a co-writer on Star Wars but who knows if that’s still the case.

 

It's probably hard to keep making the same Thor jokes and have it still feel fresh. It's amazing the success they've had with this kind of character.

 

Yeah... I'd love to conclude that he's making real progress on this, but I just don't know. I like that he's still backing up that idea of not just expanding on characters like Chewbacca's grandmother, and not wanting to delve into more details in the Skywalker Saga locales and timeline. But as I read these interviews, I just as often feel like the outcome is going to be "cancellation" as it is to being a movie actually coming to fruition.

 

Even if he were making progress I doubt he’d say so in an interview where he’s meant to be promoting Thor because then it’s all anyone’s gonna want to talk about. So even if he were ten drafts in I’d expect him to give the same vague, “Yeah, I’m still writing it” answer he’s giving.

 

Taika forgot Natalie Portman had been in Star Wars.

Although "i forgot about those ones" shows he isn't a fan of the PT

Taika cares about SW as much as he cares about Thor.

 

Romance has always been part of each Star Wars trilogies though, even if the execution is not always perfect. Not ALL stories need it of course but romance is a part of life and of growing up so it would be odd not to showcase it just because some in the audience believe romance is icky. What is rare in SW is romance that ends in happy ever after (Han and Leia's romance did end happily until the ST), so I would like more of that if Romance is the main them of the movie.

 

I'm 80% sure he's joking, but it still doesn't make me feel good about this movie. I liked Thor: Ragnarok well enough, but I don't think Taika Waititi's style is right for Star Wars. I'd love to be proven wrong.
