Who’s fault is it that Rey isn’t a Skywalker? Not Rian, if he had been given that he would have worked with it. It was the guy who made her parents a mystery
What are the foul motives though? At what point do we decide to dismiss well established facts such as the disdain that JJ Abrams has for the prequels (and ROTJ honestly), the mystery boxes that JJ Abrams loves which usually don't lead anywhere, and the obsession that RJ has with focusing on how to shock the audience and how to include as many plot twists as possible as opposed to providing an organic story that should be a continuation of the previous 7 episodes and not his own platform to experiment with? Isn't this fair criticism as opposed to what you claim is "imaginary" criticism? Does JJ Abrams have to repeat verbatim "I don't like the prequels" for us to use it as an argument? And does RJ have to repeat verbatim "I didn't care for cohesiveness and continuity as much, I just wanted to challenge people" for us to also use this? Can these statements not easily be deduced by the multitude of their interviews and what we saw in their films?
I definitely would have changed Ben being a piano and Rey just wanting to touch the keys. What a sweet sweet logical tale.
Who’s fault is it that Rey isn’t a Skywalker? Not Rian, if he had been given that he would have worked with it. It was the guy who made her parents a mystery I agree that the origin of Rey redeeming Kylo may have been when they were supposed to be related. But after that got cut they kept copying the OT despite the change in context.
I like a director not caring for continuity over challenging people more than a director who hates my favourite movies. but that’s not what I think is happening. I don’t think Rian was trying to subvert the plan for TFA. The foul motives some attribute is that Rian was sexist and racist.
I see people making legit complaints of why they didn't like it. You're saying "some people said this" and I wonder who you are addressing. Random internet people?
How so? I use his actual quotes when damning him. I don't just make up stuff out of thin air. And what exactly is 'foul' about exposing sexist and racist views in entertainment or powerful people in hollywood? You think that's foul?
I think racism and sexism are foul I was referring to people on this forum attributing foul motives to Rian I believe their problems with the movie have to do with him being bad at making SW, not racist or sexist
Both are extremely wrong choices for the 3 last episodes of a 9 episode story that has influenced a huge part of modern film making and has touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people. And I don't think it could have been more obvious that he was definitely trying to subvert as much as he could. I don't think anyone is claiming that Johnson's tropes in his movie were sexist and racist on purpose. I think most people in all these ST topics are claiming that the movie ended up coming out like that. Then again, the Kylo and Rey thing is quite alarming. How on Earth does anyone not realize it's a toxic romance and gives the wrong messages?
What message is the right one? I don’t think the movie is saying Kylo Ren is great boyfriend material, showing a toxic relationship and endorsing one are different. Also, the sequels are not the true ending of the original six. I appreciate that Rian used his opportunity at bastardizing SW to experiment and create something I can atleast find interesting, when every other Disney SW mostly cares about recreating props
I don't think Rian is a terrible person. I do think he made a terrible SW movie. I don't think he dislikes SW or tried to make a bad movie. But I think he is far less clever than he thinks he is, and it damaged a brand I really care about imo. I've like SW since I was a little kid.
Again, how is it foul/wrong to expose or discuss someone being racist or sexist (and using their own words, or creative acts as evidence)? You say we're foul for attributing this these qualities to Rian. Foul is staying quiet. Foul is being silent. Foul is just accepting this qualities in our society.
Reading comprehension. i never said you were foul for attributing those views to Rian, just that I think you’re wrong.
My friend, his direct quotes include: calling Kylo Ren a character we can all relate to saying that the scene where Rey and Kylo touch hands had to be a scene viewed from the POV of a young woman who feels romance claiming that that same scene is "as close to sex" as we will get in Star Wars I don't know how one doesn't realize that RJ wanted Rey and Kylo to be sitting on a tree with heart shaped clouds over their heads. And I appreciate nothing about RJ.
Lol. Writing comprehension. You said FOUL MOTIVES. Your words. That means you think we're being foul, on purpose, as our motive, for ascribing these traits to Rian. As I said in the other thread. I don't even think Rian is doing this purposefully. He's got bias. Blind spots. He hasn't examined his own self or writing, in my view, because his story, characters, and his words in interviews in conceiving both.
All of those quotes are about what is shown to the audience, not indicating that Rian thinks it’s not a toxic relationship
Yes, I am also giggly and with a smile that goes to my ears when I talk about toxic relationships that I created. And portray them romantic and cute. Come on, man.
Lots of people get invested in fictional toxic relationships. Rian obviously thinks the romance is dramatically compelling, I’m not denying that.
That's the problem. He is also invested in this toxic relationship. And he has never ever criticized it or spoken about it with negativity. What exactly makes you think that RJ disapproves the Reylo thing? He has literally liked and retweeted Reylo tweets more times than I can count.
